Dolphins' highly-paid WRs not living up to expectations

He's not targeted enough because he can't beat top corners. He can't separate. Watch his catches. Against second tier corners. Not in traffic. You have to have a perfect situation for him. Either the scheme gets him open or there is a breakdown in the secondary. You need a perfect window. When a number 1 corner covers him, he can't separate, he can't fight, and he's cooked. Is he pathetic? No, he can make some competent catches when it's handed to him. But Hartline is the archetypical 8-8 player. If you want an 8-8 team, by all means, load up with Brian Hartlines. At least it's better than Roberto Wallace or Marlin Moore. They are not even 8-8 players.

Brian Hartline is one of the all time most overrated Dolphins.

No one here is overrating Brian Hartline. No one would ever try to include him among the top WRs in Dolphin history. He's been good, not great and his chemistry with Tannehill has earned him back to back 70+ receptions and 1,000 yard seasons. Nothing fame worthy but still nothing to sneeze at to accomplish such a feat at an NFL level.

I think he is playing well.

i'd be more happy with wallace game and what he brings to the table if i didn't have brian hartline as my next option...the guy even tries to catch slant routes with his body...whens the last time he ran thru contact on anything other than a poor tackling attempt on a comeback route...drops too many balls in traffic...goes to ground all the time...i'm just over it...give me a physical mismatch wr who makes things for himself and not has to be scheme driven...someone you can work fade routes in the end zone with without wasting downs or throw back shoulder at the pylon to after he gets physical at the los...a boss

And yet, he's 7th in team history for receiving yards. And IIRC, if he has another 1,000 yard season will be the only (or the 2nd) Dolphins receiver to do that in 3 straight years. That boggles my mind.

Again, Hartline is a decent complimentary receiver, but by no means should an offense run through him.

95% of your posts are #HartlineHate.

7 of his 10 catches are for first downs. He's rarely been targeted. Same for Gibson. They are good possession receivers who are complimentary to speed guys.

Ah yes! The real problem w. this team is that they don't run the offense through Hartline, lol.

All we have to do to JUST WIN BABY! is feed Hartline the ball. Yep. Target him more. That means that 70 percent of the passes he catches would be first downs! Yay! And Miami would easily be -- say, 7-9 or 8-8 -- exactly what they were whenever Hartline was getting targeted regularly and making all those first downs, lol.

YAY! Target the excellent WR playmaker Hartline more! Let's get to 7-9, folks! Hartline will take us there easily, put the team on his playmaking back, make all those physical catches, beat good coverage, score TDs, own the redzone! yay! Cause Hartline is awesome and it's #HartlineHate to expose him as what he is: low-level WR put in a high-level starting position on the Fins for years.

Hey! I'm all for targeting Hartline more. It worked so well in the past. Let's do it again! Maybe this time we'll have high level success, running the passing offense through Hartline, lol. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Funniest line I've ever read on Finheaven: We need to run the offense through Hartline to have success!! lolololol.

Which I think is LDaniel and Austin's point. Why overpay for a guy who's not great-caliber, but only pretty good? It ties up too much money on one WR when you can shop around for better guys around the league.
I like Hartline with what he can do when the time comes, but his cieling is a #3 at this point.

there is too much wallace emphasis...especially when the guys route running is inconsistent and he doesnt really help his qb on some things...but at least he scares the opposition and allows for pitch and catch in front of off coverage

miami's emphasising him like he's a legit #1 wr...when really he's not...

He stretches the defense and he gets behind defenders. That's why they brought him in here. I'm sure the team is hoping they can squeeze a little more production out of him, but that would be a bonus and nothing anyone should have expected would definitely happen. He is what he is, and for that he's useful despite what some may see as an incongruity between his salary level and his production.

no argument...he brings this offense what it needs...but his partner in crime hartline does not...even the catches hartline made sunday the first one on a quick slant the only reason that balls not contested more is tanny look to the opposite side and holds the 2nd level inside defender a nanosecond to get the window...and whys hartline going to ground??? will he ever run thru one of those damn things...hell no he won't...most the contested slant routes with hartline are two fold...he gets abused physically at the los or he lets the damn ball get into his body and the trail defender wraps him up instead of plucking the ball with his hands in the air...will he ever break a tackle or make someone miss...only time the guys done anything in the open field he made a wsshed up ed reed corpse miss on a catch vs the jets and td...a tackle that safety should have made if he wasn't done

the other ball hartline caught against zone on 3rd and 10 in the first quarter he lets the ball hit him in the shoulder pad first...why??? reach out pluck the ball...if he ever catches anything in traffic and runs through it i'll drop dead...

Agreed. Hartline is a barely adequate #2. If you need 8 yards, you'd better be sure he has passed the markers before you throw it because if you he's only 6 yards out, he's not getting you those extra 2 yards unless someone pushes him over the line. We don't have that reliable guy that can catch one over the middle and turn it up-field. I've noticed they've tried Wallace on those routes a couple of times this year but that's not really his strength. Maybe Landry will be that guy in time.

if both your "top 2" wrs want to catch everything with their body and are finesse in every aspect of their game from a route running aspect to after the catch it's not good...not to mention if neither of them offer much of anything in the red zone...only reason wallace caught that fade td was cause tanny put it exactly on his outside shoulder...great play but you can't go to that as a go to red zone play with him...the odds aren't very good...hartline you might as well throw it in the 3rd row before you call any iso red zone plays for him in the end zone...

team needs a physical mismatch win option..someone you can throw 50/50 balls to and not have to always read leverage and coverage to decide if you can go to him...a boss a guy that will go get the ball in the air and physically dominate...miami needs to find it...if not at wr at tight end...

I fear the second they stop doing that Wallace will start whining about how terrible Lazor is.

For all the crap some people on here give him for that endzone situation vs. the Patriots, the irony is the guy has two unlikely, tough TD's this year.

The crap he was given for that play was deserved for three reasons:

1. It should have been made
2. It would have countered some of the "Tannehill can't complete the deep ball" stuff.
3. Wallace is the highest paid WR in the league.
