Dolphins not to franchise Grimes?

If he is franchised, they can still work out a long term deal up until June. The tag can be used to extend the negotiating period and keep him from free agency if needed.

That is what I was thinking.

They could create 11 million almost be re-doing Wallace, cutting Patterson and Moore.

Yes, Grimes is a beast but we did draft two CB's to take over.

Personally, you bring back Grimes I don't mind over paying a bit but the $11 tag was nuts.

Looking for a 3 year at $5 with $10 of it guaranteed. If need be push it up to 3/$6 with $12 guaranteed.

He is not going for anything less the 8 a year...that's slightly below market value for top 5 CBs...and well with-in the budget of the Dolphins.

Remember Ellerbe is getting close to 7 a year...

Sounds like the Seahawks...how they been doing lately...

The Seahawks drafted well and many of their major contributors are those players....the Dolphins have not drafted well...

I don't see how paying 1 player almost 1/10 of the teams total cap for a non super QB is a good idea..

Getting 1 or 2 good players and then only have the cap space to add a bunch of scrubs is what this team has done for the past 2 decades or so and what has that resulted in?

Guaranteed money is what really counts for most of these guys.

Fairly sure Grimes would take $10-12 in the pocket off a 3 year deal with an additional $5-6 off incentives than say a 3 year / $8 with less guaranteed.

Grimes isin't stupid, he knows he is getting old and his skills can drop off drastically from year to year or get hurt again.

Letting your best players walk…awesome.

A player that actually wants to be here as well.

Actually .... Letting THE BEST 2013 player go..... I hope we sign him to a 3 year deal. If we have that much money allocated on two struggling LB's, why can't we pay our ONLY real probowl 2013 player on defense. (Wake made it because of 2012).

It is not and I wouldn't want grimes signed for 10 million a year, but at 8 or so he is worth it.

Also with the new CBA, the very low rookie contracts, and the rise in cap space every year...teams are going to spend more and be able to pay these higher contracts without it putting the team in cap hell...the key is not back loading contract too much where a player (who had an average of 9 a year) is getting 17 and 18 million over the last 2 years of the contract.

Pressure is on Hickey to make the right decision ... and of course what is right will only be determined after he makes a decision.

I like Grimes but they need bodies of players to play as a team. I don't like players that play for money. I like players that have passion and pride, players that play for their teammates. If Grimes is all about money than team then I say bye bye.

Brent Grimes is the best Free Agent that Ireland recruited. He is the best DB since the days of Pat Surtain and Sam Maddison (and maybe he's better than them too). We need to lock him down for several years and this is a top priority. He is short and he is over 30, but it doesn't matter, he is a rare talent. Pay the man.

The Dolphins are smart not to use the tag on Grimes. ONE: Grimes has stated he doesn't want to be tagged, so doing so could cause him to become disgruntled. TWO: $11 million plus is just too much. That is an enormous chunk of cap space. A deal for three or so years helps to spread the money around more through each season and with a signing bonus. That will leave us in a much better cap situation. Tagging Grimes would cause us to lose approximately 1/3 of our cap space for the coming season. It would be dumb to tag him.

Exactly especially with it being rumored the cap space could jump another 15-20 million next year...

The cap would be raised from $123m to approximately $130m. That's not a $15-$20m difference in a raise of the cap lol. It does make a difference though and know what you mean. Grimes will not leave Miami unless he finds it straight up unattractive. If he is interested in staying, he will be resigned.

This is NOT what they have been doing the last decade... where have you been hiding?

They sign scrubs at the outset and when a player becomes "good", becomes a force league-wide, they let him walk to save $$$. THAT is exactly what this would be and that is EXACTLY why we are mediocre with a bunch of nobodies.

You want to CONTINUE the failure.

As much as I'd love to resign Grimes, I can understand if Hickey would like to put the big money in younger talent. It's unlikely this team is Super Bowl bound this upcoming season or the season after. We need talent on the field that can be productive three, four, five years down the road... except for the o-line because a bad o-line hampers qb development.

The problem with that is Hickey doesn't have 3,4,5 years for talent to develop down the road. He needs to put a team on the field that wins now, or he and Philbin won't be here.

Grines is not leaving miami even speculating is a waste of breath
