Dolphins' poor start rooted in five years of bad drafts

Even in hindsight I'd still take Jake Long. It's pretty clear that under this regime Matt Ryan would not be as good as he has been. Look at what three years of David Lee did with our young QBs and project that onto Matt Ryan - he'd be an average starter at best. By now he'd be out for the season anyway playing behind Colombo and a Colombo clone at LT

Jake Long doesn't play the most important position on the field but he does play probablythe the second most important position and before they ruined him by playing him when he was injured he was easily top 3 in that position. If they took Chris Long or Gholston or that other DL then you can start talking bad pick. There are dozens of rancid picks in the last 10 years but Jake Long isn't one of them. I know as a Fins fan it's hard to believe but getting a QB is not THAT difficult if you've got a good GM. We've had loads of high picks used on much less important positions than LT and on much worse players than Jake Long that could have been turned into a QB but weren't

I honestly don't understand how one could continue to want Jake Long over Matt Ryan, when we still don't have a starting-caliber QB. That to me makes no sense.

The idea that Matt Ryan wouldn't be the same quarterback here is purely speculative and not an adequate rationale IMO.

IF we had done this and IF we had done that. IF we had drafted this guy and IF we had drafted the other.IF is the most used word in the Bible also by the way. We can posibly do a bunch of things in the future but we can NOT change the past.We can all drive ourselfs crazy thinking about why we took Allen, White and Turner and Merlin and on and on. We can also drive ourselfs crazy thinking why we did NOT drafted Brees or Rodgers or Ryan. But it wouldn't do any good guys. All we can do is the get rid of the idiots we have now making those decisions and hope the new guys they bring in are smarter which it shouldn't be too hard.So stop fighting so much and just enjoy watching DT run and Pouncy block and hopefully Clay making some nice catches cause this season is over for us and we'll have to wait yet another year to see if things can be different.

Ozzy rules!!

It's all purely speculative. Obviously. We've blown countless high picks on a whole lot of nothing (I'm sure I don't have to list them all) - if you want to know where it went wrong I'd start there rather than keep harping on about a pick where we actually got a very good player playing a very important position

maybe aaron Rodgers would be chad henne here by your logic. Ryan is one of the top qb's in the NFL> he went to an Atlanta team that had not made the playoffs in three years and was as much a mess as our dolphins were.

true, but i'd still rather have Rodgers than Ryan. just my opinion though

Seriously people have a right to opinions but really if u think Ryan is just a servicable qb then you really are not paying attention.

he definately is not in the elite category right now...maybe in a few years he steps it up and becomes elite but as of right now Matt Ryan is not elite.

Matt Ryan is a very good quarterback, but there definitely seems to be something wrong when the playoff lights come on.

IMO the word elite.gets tossed around to much.

Same as franchise QB. Theres only about 4 elite qbs. Everybody else is just good.

The only reason that's harped on is because it was a missed opportunity to land the starting-caliber quarterback we still don't have.

If you don't have a starting-caliber quarterback, every pick where you had a chance to get one and passed was a huge mistake IMO, I don't care who you got instead.

I mean if you don't have a starting-caliber quarterback, how can you win? So we have a stud left tackle. So what?

If Chad Henne had panned out to be a quality starter, then great. But he hasn't, so the strategy of taking a LT #1 overall, passing on Matt Ryan, and waiting until the 2nd round to take a QB was a huge mistake.

A huge miscalculation. And Parcells, Ireland, and Sparano will all be gone soon because of it, primarily.

Matt Ryan is not elite, but he's a good franchise QB. Serviceable is like Henne. Chad can manage games, but you can never expect him to win games.

I agree completely.I don't regret them taking Long over Ryan.To me,Ryan is a good,not great,QB.

Now,can you win some meaningful games with him? Absolutely.Maybe good enough to win a 'ship, but by no means do I consider him an elite QB.When I think of elite Qb's,only 5 come to mind

P.Manning
T.Brady
D.Brees
A.Rodgers
P.Rivers

Your trying to tell me Ryans name can be placed among that group??? The guy hasn't even won a playoff game yet!
It sounds as if you are basing Ryan's not being a franchise QB on his problems to get anywhere in the playoffs. If true, you should remove Rivers from that ist as he has done nothing spectacular in Jan-Feb either. Sanchez has done more in the playoffs then Rivers has.

People are finally realizing that Matt Ryan is way overrated. The media crowned this guy and fans fell for it.

I don't think he's overrated i think he is right with what everyone is saying. Not elite but good to very good. (i.e. he wins games)

I'm not gonna say Long over Ryan was a bad decision. Ryan isn't even an elite QB with the offense he's leading in Atlanta. Look at our offense, especially the o-line. Look at the o-line with Long, we don't have to imagine how bad it would be without Long, we saw it during the preseason. How great would Ryan like behind that?

And let's say we did take Matt Ryan. Is he really that great? He's good. He's good enough for sure. He'd keep a team competitive, just like he is in Atlanta. But will he make a team great? With him, we could just go through years of 10-6 over and over and never break through. At least now, we're bad enough that we know we have to rebuild. This front office has a lot of reasons to have criticism thrown at them, I don't think this is one of them.
