Dolphins re-sign Pro Bowl Cornerback Brent Grimes

Yeah, except our defense was one of our strengths last season and the only reason we were in so many games late - why don't you focus on that 29th ranked offense before mentioning the faults of a top 10 defense.

Keep thinking that bro. This defense wasn't giving up big plays, they just gave up first down conversion after first down conversion which is why they were worse than their ranking, which doesn't take into account points, when the points were scored, or conversion percentages, etc. But I'm done trying to educate people on these things. Congratulate yourself on a top 10 defense that was still on a team that wasn't good enough. A real defense in this league doesn't get beat twice by Thad Lewis and a single time by Geno Smith regardless of who is on offense. I can't imagine Seattle or San Francisco having that hold them back.

Another Positive to this re signing...
Grimes now has a full offseason to work with last years CB rookies who were injured the majority of training camp. Man if only 1 of those guys can step up we are in a good place.

Sounds like Aponte and Herman did a good job with the contract.

The details of Brent Grimes' contract are in and, predictably, the sides answered the issue of the player's age, which will be 31-years-old when the 2014 season begins, by basically splitting the baby.

King Solomon would be proud.

The Dolphins make a strong commitment to Grimes the first two years of the four-year, $32 million deal that includes $16 million in guaranteed money.

The Dolphins, meanwhile, protect themselves from a sudden drop in performance when Grimes hits his 33rd and 34th birthdays because he could could be easily cut those two years.

The cap hit for cutting Grimes in 2016 at age 33 would be $3 million. The cap hit for cutting Grimes the final year of his deal would be $1.5 million. And by cutting Grimes those years the Dolphins would save $8 million in cap space in 2016 (assuming they designate the cut for post June 1 or $6.5 million if they take the $3 million in dead money all in one lump sum.)

The Dolphins would save $5.5 million in cap space in 2017 if they cut the player at any time before the regular season begins.

So, in that regard, the Dolphins are really committed to Grimes for two years.

One more thing: The cap hit for Grimes this season is $4 million. That's less than the cap hit for Grimes last season. And the while the cap hit will climb to $10 million in 2015, the salary cap itself is expected to climb next year for all teams so that will mitigate that pain.

By the way, there's $100,000 in reporting bonuses throughout the life of the contract -- $25,000 every year.

Good article by Barry Jackson as he points out that by signing Grimes to a long term deal, the Dolphins actually saved $7 million in cap space by not having to use the franchise tag.
