Dolphins releasing Pat Devlin

Interesting timing. They must have planned to cut him and due to injury he was useless as a guy to give preseason reps to WRs. I doubt we keep 3 QBs while paying our 3rd 2 million (quinn) moore is bout to be cut I think that's why you give quinn 2 mill

I attended Training Camp this morning. Brady Quinn actually looked quite decent. Even Lobato made a few nice throws.
I have always been something of a Matt Moore supporter (and I still am). However, there is a possibility if Brady Quinn does pretty well, that Matt Moore could be cut and the team banks the savings towards paying megabucks for Tannehill in the future.
Two days ago I would have the said the possibility of cutting Moore for Quinn was ridiculous. However, I'm not so sure now. Brady Quinn's appearance on the roster could be to send a message to Matt Moore that they want to see a lot more to earn the $5M+ salary.

What they should do is try to get Moore to restructure (assuming they are interested in keeping him) and maybe this Quinn signing is a shot across the bow. I don't want to say its Hickey's MO but it seems to me we offered both Starks and Soliai $5M per year as take it or leave it offers and a similar thing could be happening here: We're going to pay our backup QB X amount of money, if you don't want to restructure Moore then buh-bye.

That is why we are such losers. We don't draft quinn, then we bring him in 7 years later after he proves he's a bust. And we keep Lobado, and cut Devlin who at least has promise. We have no clue. Philbin can go next. Hopefully Devlin gets his chance in the NFL and shows us all.

Depends on your definition of "give". I doubt Quinn got any guaranteed money, so if he gets cut, he gets nothing. Like others have pointed out we needed some live vet arms for camp what with all the injuries. Having that will actually cost us nothing. I would get all the speculation if we'd signed Quinn in March, but the circumstances of his signing tell the whole story.

What Quinn gets in return is a chance, however slim, of actually earning a job.

Random thoughts on the backup QB situation:

1. I had the same thought exactly that Vaark had, i.e., that Lazor is asserting himself here and he just doesn't see Devlin as a fit to the new offense. Devlin had plenty of time to show he is an NFL quarterback. We seem to have just been wasting time with him.

2. I like Matt Moore. He's a competitor and a team guy. He is a leader too. He is banged up and I don't know how Lazor feels he will fit. Lazor likes a strict regimen and he wants practice players. Moore is more of a game day, tough hombre, find a way to get it done guy. Lazor may not like the inconsistency in approach with Moore, so who knows. I'd keep Moore if healthy and has any kind of reasonable aptitude for the offense.

3. I am not comfortable with Quinn as a number 2. He hasn't been here all offseason. Skill-wise, I have thought he was a classic stiff. Slow reads, slow progession, slow release, mediocre arm, etc. Too many teams have had a good look at him and he was on the street. No qb coach, offensive coordinator, or head coach that he has been with in the past has clamored to have him because they like him or trust him. He is what he is at this point, unless there is some gigantic shock. If Tannehill goes down, are we really trotting Quinn out there for game duty? I think you keep Moore.

4. Miami will need to draft a legit young qb soon. Like a 3rd or 4th rounder. It's tough because this team has had so many holes. But a developmental qb is important. Someone who can play.

5. I still have no idea why Zak Taylor is here. He climbed the corporate ladder too fast. We just read about how Lazor is changing Tannehill's footwork and Tanne thinks he will get better accuracy accordingly. Devlin didn't get there. Where was Taylor in all of this? What the heck is Taylor doing besides being a nepotism beneficiary?

How long can you focus on developing your #3 QB, when you havent even fully developed your #1. Lets face it, it was only a matter of time. Devlin showed hes capable of playing in NFL, but will never truly develop as a starter in this league.

I hope Devlin does succeed at some level where he goes. I don't think anyone here wishes him any less. IMO what many are reacting to is rants like yours. It's OK to have your opinion but when you overstate (IMO) what Pat Devlin has actually shown there is a natural reaction to downgrade even what he did. I was hoping that he would be the next solid #2 - we need one. On some level Devlin must not have shown what the coaches want or they wouldn't cut him and bring in someone like Quinn who hasn't shown much either.

If Pat Devlin wants to succeed he needs to figure out what that is. BTW - this is about Devlin not beating out Moore. The whole RT was a favorite argument doesn't work with a Moore "competition" because the coaches have already shown no "loyalty" to Moore from the beginning. They did not let him start the season when RT was a rookie and they stuck with that decision even when RT had rough spots. MM costs more and I'm sure that they would have loved to have not signed Moore to his current contract. Pat Devlin had every opportunity to succeed and for some reason didn't.

definitely not as a starter and pretty likely not as a back-up. He's probably not starting material in canada either. Maybe the Arena league.

One practice and Quinn has potential to unseat. Makes sense.

High doubtful. Should've drafted a back up if they wanted to save money.

With all of our needs and the limited number of QBs that were good this year? Why and who specifically did you have in mind to draft?

1. Devlin was Injury/Waive, if he is not claimed I believe the Dolphins have the option to place him on season ending IR.

2. Did we really need a thread for #3 QB who we have been developing for 3+ years, and is now replaced by Brady Quinn???? Devlin must not be all that jazz if Philbin feels some unemployed QB that was weeks away from starting a radio show can come in and take his spot.

3. Screams only 2 active QB's on final 53.

4. Please stop saying that Quinn might be a move to replace Moore because of his cap hit. We are talking Brady Quinn here.

Agreed. IF the WRs and TEs are as good as reported I would rather have the 3rd QB roster spot on the practice squad rather than the 53 because if RT goes down we are done anyway.

IMO they bring in Quinn to learn the playbook and the system for the rest of preseason and he gets the chop at final cuts with a speed dial promise in the event Tannehill/Moore goes down.

I think they are hoping quinn can get it together quick so they can cut or trade moore honestly. Save $4 mill in cap or get an extra pick. Moore won't be back next season, Quinn could be long term backup. Its a reach but thats my .02

It still doesn't make complete sense to me. Is Quinn so good that he wants to screw up his Fox gig if he doesn't make the 53? He should have a clue that if he is cut the "speed dial" thing may not happen because if he doesn't learn quick enough (we only have a few weeks here till the cuts) then he may not have learned well enough or be capable enough that once we are in the season whoever we put on the practice squad may be a better option at that point.

That would be the logical explenation if Moore did not count $5.5 against the cap.

Teams know his high cap hit for a #2 and would either not trade for that cap hit, or give us a crap in return because of that cap hit. I'm sure they will wait for Dolphins to make the first move (either take a 6-7th rounder or just cut Moore to save cap).

In addition, we are 3 weeks away from the start of the season and just about every team has #1 set. Unless you know, Manning or Rogers goes down Week 1 or something, I don't see a team desperate enough to pull the trigger.

Teams that are super bowl ready already have #1 set. Teams that basically have 0 super bowl shot wont give up picks.
