Dolphins request permission to speak with Gamble

I think there are plenty of positives for the Miami job but the difference w/ the coaches is Lovie has had a lot of success where Philbin hasn't had any YET. In that regard Tampa is more attractive

A gm with no power..

His power will be limited in Miami too and he inherits a lesser coach. Again, I think there are plenty of positives and you should be able to attract a good candidate. Just offering the other side of that argument.

The power is always with the owner. Just because a piece of paper says a GM can fire a HC this doesn't mean after he does fire that HC that GM will have a job. All of this speculation IMO is of no consequence. Every GM out there has to get the approval from their owner before they fire any HC whether it's in their contract or not.

I can't see any GM out there just firing a HC without the owner approving it.

I have no idea what state of health his father is in but being on hospice care doesn't always mean the conditions are dire.

No, but it means the only "treatment" is to make him comfortable as he waits for the end. We don't know what his condition consists of, but I think the idea is we'll fly the healthy son back to Philly any time rather than move the sick dad any where.

I didn't say anything about the hc. Lovie has final say over all personnel decisions in Tampa.

The difference is there wasn't both a head coach and GM opening in Miami. Tampa Bay hired a head coach before a GM, basically saying Lovie Smith will have a lot of power there. Otherwise they would have hired a GM first and let him help hire a head coach. Philbin could be gone after this upcoming season.

while true then the GM has to start over w/ a new coach after the first year setting back the franchise another year.

Lovie a lot of success - according to....? What is success? How many more SBs Lovie got than Joe? How is Lovie's PO track record?

you get it - some folks need to look up what a hospice is apparently

Lovie has 5 winning seasons, 5 more than Philbin
3 postseasons, 3 more than Philbin
3 playoff wins, 3 more than Philbin
1 title game app, 1 more than philbin
1 SB app, 1 more than Philbin

He's had success in this league w/ mediocre QB play, something Philbin has not had success with.

Lovie Smith isn't a bad coach but I don't understand why the Bucs gave him full control.

And my point still applies. W/e decisions he makes as far as his staff has to be approved by the owners there. Do you honestly think he can just hire any GM he wants without them having a major say in it? He wouldn't have a job for very long if they disapprove his decisions.

All NFL franchises have to answer to their ownership. Even Jerry Jones. lol

Yes they do!

my first thought right after seeing on tv that ireland got the bums rush was TOM GAMBLE!!

he is and has been my first choice, far and away above all. however..................... .

you do not leave a superbowl team, one that is superbly coached and one you spent years helping to stock with all pro/pro bowl talent unless you have a mission.

and i do not believe gamble split the bay area to be with mike vick. its his folks, and that means HE IS NOT coming here. forget devil aponte and the toxic job rumors, its about taking care of his folks and helping THEM with the final curtain. and that says a WHOLE LOT about the man. dude is straight up, top to bottom a man you would want in a leadership role on your team [or anywhere else].

now, if he ACCEPTS and actually comes for the interview, that changes things. this would mean things with his dad are not quite as critical. he has the best care, 24/7 care he can get in the hospice and not much more he can do for his dad. his life, and career go on.

florida is closer to philly than san fran for sure. and ross spares NO EXPENSE when he wants something. so, if gamble says yes to an interview, DONT BRING HIM HERE!! ross should imediatley get on his jet ond GO TO PHILLY all by himself and sit and talk with the man. talk about his situation with his folks and REASSURE HIM that his jet, expenses, logistics, whatever he needs to take care of his folks situation will be available at notice, 24-7 should he need to get home. a lot of things he has to do, he can do from philly by fax and phone. assure him travel, time, flexability in logistics, etc.... if that has to happen once in a while.

go meet his mom and dad. if his dad is able to communicate, this goes a LONG, LONG WAY as making ross, and the dolphins look so much more personable. gamble can write his ticket. the huge contract is waiting for him in several cities. this is one thing ross can do to seperate himself from the pack. show a GENUINE INTEREST AND COMPASSION for gambles family situation.

then after dinner, the spread of all spreads, NO expense spared, you retreat and talk about the team. the goals and how much ross NEEDS HIS EXPERTISE and knowlege of football. come CLEAN about being a novice who didnt know as much as he thought he did. convince him that he will give him ALL AVENUES to make the miami dolphins a respected winner again. there will be NO ONE in his way, they teams office personnel will be ASSISTING HIM to accomplish whatever he needs. make him KNOW that the miami dolphins are the place where he WILL make his mark in the nfl in the GM position he has coveted for so long and will have full freedom to do it as he sees fit.

HE has the power over the coach. that is exactly how it SHOULD work if you are turning your football team over to someone who knows football. coaches ALWAYS have a boss be it owner or gm so that shouldnt be an issue with JP. especially if its someone with the credentials of mr. gamble. i am sure philbin looking on the practice field and seeing ACTUAL TALENT all over the field will make him forget all about whos over him.

and THEN the contract. hand him the check book. have his ryder in print and get it all off [via fax] to aponte [whom you ABSOLUTELY leave in miami] and to all agents and lawyers and then get him on the jet, even if you have to stay in philly a couple days to ride back with ross on the plane. under wraps, in sight and SIGNED!!!

NOTE: i basically said when the harbaugh thing was in play that HIS KIND OF TALENT does not come along often. and we know he is the real deal now. if he was SERIOUS about landing harbaugh, he needed to do exactly what i laid out above for gamble. and the FLAMING, BASHING, TAUNTING, FARTING, ANGER, THREATS, NASTY EMAILS AND CYBER-SHOUTING came in DROVES!!! "awe man!! you cant offer someone that much off the bat!". "if he doesnt want to come here for stater money than we dont need him!" "there's other coaches out there, we dont need him that bad!" "he aint that good!!" etc.... .

how does it sound now? yeah, it would have been worth it. in gambles field, he is THE GUY, the "harbaugh of gm's"! the next SURE THING [as sure as can be] and the kind of talent that doesnt come along often, who has the endorsement of the VERY BEST in nfl circles, the stellar tract record for talent [the thing we are missing the most] and over all nfl knowledge. more WELL ROUNDED and VERSATILE than any of the other prospects hand down.

if ross gets a shot at an interview, what i said above has to happen. were not a we can pic and choose, "their all lucky to get an interview with us!" organization coming off 10 years of playoff appearances and superbowl wins. WE ARE A HAS-BEEN, SEEN BETTER DAYS, TALENT VOID, REPUTATION SOILED FRANCHISE and we have to pony up!! we cant afford to low ball shuck and jive. we need to approach him HAT IN HAND being honest about our recent past and plans for the future and also the fact mistakes WERE MADE and ross is absolutely dedicated to not making them again. he needs a leader, a KNOWLEDGEABLE LEADER in the dolphins office and that he is above and away the man they want. the one they believe in.

we didnt have a wr who could scare ANYONE the last few years. ireland refused to do it. went on the cheap for iffy talent. so, when wallace was there, HE HAD TO OVER PAY, HE HAD TO THROW THE BIG CONTRACT because ihe him-hawed and cheap skated and neglected nedd for so long. wallace skills are not on every corner and ireland was forced to pay BIG!!

dont want to make that mistake again with gamble. see another team pony up [jets] and we watch gamble load the division with top talent.

now, i do not consider what i layed out above for landing gamble OVER PAYING as in the sense wallace was. ALL sports figures are MASSIVELY OVER PAID!! but the gm, one who knows ALL FACETS of the nfl and is an ACE when it comes to talent evaluation is priceless. this kind of gm can make NFL DYNASTY'S!! load your team with talent and depth and make your franchise relevant for YEARS to come. THIS IS WHERE YOU THROW OUT THE RED CARPET, THE BIG BUCKS!!!

so, we shall see. i dont think the finz would be asking [its what you have to do even if he wants to] if they didnt think he was in play. like i said with harbaugh a few years back, when faced with this sort of talent, when you have a chance, YOU GRAB IT!! YOU HOOK IT AND REAL IT IN AS HARD AS POSSIBLE!! you spare NO EXPENSE!! you dance the dance!!

when we were looking for a new coach after sparano, early on philbin was mentioned. and then he just faded out, no mention of him, no interview set up. his son had just died and everyone thought that he would probably not coach that year. interviews went on. and then, out of the blue, BANG!! it came on nfl network that during the night we had finalized a deal with JOE PHILBIN to be head coach!!!

could this be the same type of thing? throw lots of names around, do a couple quick interviews, etc.. and then WAM!! all of a sudden gamble is in play after everyone thought he wasnt in the picture, kept things on the down low to keep people from other teams butting in and the media out of the way.

whatever you think of all that though, come on guys, can you imagine having REAL talent on this team again? back to the days when dolphins in the playoffs was an afterthought? on draft day, with almost every pic it made sense, you knew, even if you were not that familiar with the player, we would most likely see him playing some role, or starting!!

thats all i want. to see that again before i take my dirt nap. thats worth ross taking a jet ride to philly to meet gambles folks!

wow man.. ****ing love this post. I certainly can feel what you're saying. What I'm afraid of is that Gamble already knows he's not going to take the job and he's being professional being interviewing as a courtesy, and to keep his name at the top of the lists when he is ready to move.

Sadly with him just moving his family to Philly and rumors that he's not keen in up rooting them again, we may miss out on this upper tier talent.
