Dolphins to release DE Merling

We've got plenty of 3/4 DEs on the roster, we need 4-3 DEs for our four man fronts.

Miami has 3 3-4 DE's on the roster. Starks, Odrick and Mcdaniel. They need another. Cox can also (his best postiion) play the UT in a 4-3. Not saying he's going to be the pick but if he were, it would be a great pick

All the more reason for us to move down in the draft. We need to get as many quality people as we can in this draft so the more picks the better.

The tender makes this move puzzling. Again, it looks as though Ireland has no plan and he's just flying by the seat of his pants. I'm sure the media will be all over this since it seems everyone is jumping on the Dolphins while they're down but the move may be to free up some cap room to sign Wake long term (I hope) or possibly to throw off the draftniks who say were pushing for Tannehill by making it look like we're going for Coples/Ingram with the #8 overall pick or that we're actually taking one of those two guys.

No, it is not that Ireland does not have a plan. Though that is what the lame main stream media will say - Mike Florio, Adam Schefter, etc. Not because it is true, and not because any source will say it - they will just float the idea and see if the someone will run with it.

Your nuts if you thought Merling was a 43 De...cause he was not going to be that for us..He projected more to 3 tech in the 43.. Cox can play 43 dt(3 tech) or 5 tech in the 34...

We have Oddrick and Starks as well as Tony Mcdaniel and Paul..Those are our only quality interior linemen..

Cox helps out ourpass rush alot.

probably fuels the fletcher cox flame if you believe thats really in play...

When I evaluated Merling coming out of Clemson he was a 4-3 DE to me all the way. Never understood the pick but yes, he would have been a 4-3 DE for us.

When he came out yes..but now he is like 310 pounds..good luck getting him to around 280

Just does not make senses they they tendered him for some sort of trade value. Any guesses out there?

Merling was 295 and as lazy as he is probably would have been tough for him to get down to 280 still.

Right now we have Odrick, McDaniel, Starks and Baker at DE for the 3-4 and they can all play DT in the 4-3 along with Soliai. We'd probably bring Wake down to play DE (even though he's 245 lbs) on 4 man fronts...who's the other DE? You can possibly put Odrick out there but he provides little pass rush. Starks can provide pass rush from the middle but I still don't see another DE on this team in the 4-3.

Could have been for trade value...Maybe they tendered him and told him hey Phil get to this weight...get to this body fat % etc.

Maybe he didnt meet his target and that was it...

Maybe they wanted to look at the college class coming into the draft..see what was out there were impressed with what they can get and decided to move on from Phil...endless possibilities.

Finally a smart move!!! This guy absolutely sucks and I have been saying it for 3 ****ing years now. His balance is terrible and he spends more time on the ground than any other player on the team (Incognito a close second....)

This regime finally gets things right; Ginn, White, Merling, Henne, Crowder, etc....to bad it only takes them two extra years to figure out the same thing some of us here already knew...
