Dolphins to release DE Merling

Merling was 295 and as lazy as he is probably would have been tough for him to get down to 280 still.

Right now we have Odrick, McDaniel, Starks and Baker at DE for the 3-4 and they can all play DT in the 4-3 along with Soliai. We'd probably bring Wake down to play DE (even though he's 245 lbs) on 4 man fronts...who's the other DE? You can possibly put Odrick out there but he provides little pass rush. Starks can provide pass rush from the middle but I still don't see another DE on this team in the 4-3.

He is listed at 295 but he def looked alot heavier than that... 300 is generous...Baker is a reserve type player IMO. Do you really want him part of your rotation.. We def still need a 43 end type. Your right about that..but if they feel like they can get better value later at that posistion then they could take one 2nd or in the 3rd.

glaring need on this d is a de...and i don't mean a 34 one...a every down 43 de...frankly the guys not on this roster right now

its foolish to eat up these very very late rumors about who miami wants/likes...first time i've heard the name fletcher cox was this weekend...not buying it...at all...great player top 10 bpa but this is too late in the game...tells me cox is not the guy...might be an attempt though by ireland to get someone to come to him for cox (ie philly)

Finally what a wasted draft pick, thank you Parcells.

When BP and Ireland came in four years ago there was a general consensus on the boards at that time with what the drafts would be: Line, Skill, and then need positions and fill with FA's. After four years...we are still trying to fill the line and have nothing to show for skill positions other than 2nd rate players...

Only if we are going to go base 4-3 though. I just see them going with a hybrid, and mainly using a 3 man front with Paul, Odrick, and Starks on the early downs. We signed Westerman who can line up at DE if need be. Anyways I think we walk away from the draft with at least one but probably two DE/OLB...specifically pass rushers. Guys like Irvin, Curry, Perry if he were to fall, Chandler Jones, Cam Johnson, Vernon, Malik Jackson....all these guys could contribute.

but if you play some 43 over under stuff its not so glaring..then you get into your blitz packages in the later downs..In theory it works..but of course we have seen it before.

All of these Cox rumors are smoke and mirrors by Ireland. I think he knows that Cox is the exact type of player he would typically target, and he is wanting Philly or someone to bite (if Cox even falls to us). Ireland does his own thing and drafts to his value whether we like it or not. I could totally see Ireland trying to trade down and calling KCs bluff to see if they will take Tannehill that early.

Who do you like?

it depends what the plan is...if its to play a lot of 4 man fronts i think coples is the prototype and can shift inside and rush from the inside in the nickle...i like nick perry also but i don't think he's as stout at the poa on 1st and 2nd down...

mayock just said chandler jones who i like is his #9 bpa on his board...word on him is somewhere in the 20's he's going...

i think all this is moot though...the top pick imo is gonna be tannehill...no doubt in my mind...

fletcher cox can play 43 ut and 34 de although he's only 6 ft 4 so not quite ideal height for a 34 de his arm length is rediculous and makes up for it...i don't like projecting him in space at de and thats what that would be a projection...to me he's ideally a 43 ut who uses his short area quickness and lateral agility to get into the backfield...a similar fit to jared odrick which we already have...cox pass rush talents on the inside are what separates him from the other 300 lb dt prospects...that and the guys quite agile and a damn fantastic athlete for his size...very smooth

just don't buy these leaks this late in the process...

If this actually happens, and Miami is still able to get Tannehill at #14 and pick up another 2nd, it would make more sense. Ireland has gambled before, lets hope if he does it again, it works out!!! Odrick has shown he can play, after Ireland traded down to select him, lets hope if it is Tannehill after a possible trade down; he realizes his potential.
