Dolphins to release DE Merling

Makes perfect sense to me. Tender him and dangle him out there for a pick. If someone bites, you have an extra pick. If no one bites, you release him and don't owe him any money.

Lol it does make sense, but what doesn't make sense is them thinking this guy might have had trade value. Maybe last year, but not now.

God that 2008 draft was miserable. Aside from safely hitting on the #1 overall pick.

Yeah, obviously they tendered him so they could shop him for a pick. ALSO, maybe he showed up to offseason workouts even more fat and out of shape than usual. Not a huge loss...

The tender makes this move puzzling. Again, it looks as though Ireland has no plan and he's just flying by the seat of his pants. I'm sure the media will be all over this since it seems everyone is jumping on the Dolphins while they're down but the move may be to free up some cap room to sign Wake long term (I hope) or possibly to throw off the draftniks who say were pushing for Tannehill by making it look like we're going for Coples/Ingram with the #8 overall pick or that we're actually taking one of those two guys.

Looks like Miami just got more of a reason to take Fletcher Cox.

I guess the story about the Dolphins loving Fletcher Cox seem true now!!! What a waste of hope with all these bust of 2nd round picks!!! I am so upset at BP for trying to get cute in the 2nd round squandering away multiple picks!!! this team could be so much better if he had just used these picks more efficiently. To lose a guy like Langford for this, is unbelievable. Kendell Reyes or the kid out of Washington seems like a good bet in round 2 this year.

this draft is deep at DE and DT.... dont be surprised if the dont draft one too early and wait for the 3rd round to get a decent guy. They have their starters already( wake, solia, starks and odrick) adding a guy now is either going to be for depth or a situational pass rusher type. unfortunatly i think they r drafting tannehill first and maybe a WR or TE second with a DE/DT and OT in the third and a WR in the 4th. lets hope a decent WR falls to us the the second and or 4th round.

According to Darlington on Twitter...

Jeff Darlington ‏ @JeffDarlington Curse of 2nd-Rd Picks in Miami: Dolphins to release Phillip Merling today, sources say. Other 2nd rounders? Henne, White, Hagan, Beck, Roth.

Jeff Darlington ‏ @JeffDarlington Merling's release means Miami is now without two 2011 d-ends (Langford and Merling). This draft class, though, is deep at the position.

Not complaining but why tender him in the first place? Strange.

Welcome to the CFL - Phil...

Last year was jeffs first draft and seems he did pretty well. I won't pin those pat whites and turners on Ireland.

Merling was one of the picks I was strongly against that year. I was hoping for Jordy Nelson or Brandon Flowers.

Hahah and we picked Merling... how nice would Flowers have been right about now or the last 2 season

The Miami Dolphins are expected to formally release defensive end Phillip Merling, two sources said Monday

A second-round pick in 2008, Merling has shown a lack of discipline that has worn thin with the team, sources said.

Merling joins a long list of second-round picks in Miami who have not managed to catch on with the team. The list also includes such players as Chad Henne, Pat White, Derek Hagan, Matt Roth and John Beck.

The release of Merling is particularly relevant because it is draft week. After losing Kendall Langford in free agency, that's two defensive ends that Miami must now look to replace. Some believe, if the Dolphins don't draft a quarterback with the eighth pick, they are likely candidates to push for a defensive end instead. Merling's departure should strengthen those possibilities.

Merling, who just recently signed his tender as a restricted free agent, has not been attending voluntary workouts recently -- something that has also worn down the team and also led to the decision to release him.

The line looks like Starks---Soliai---Odrick now, right? I think Coyle is looking to have a nucleus that can stay in the game because Brady and Fitzpatrick ruin us with the hurry up offense. Wouldn't be surprised if they make the three of them lose more weight. Wake can line up next to Starks with Odrick kicking out to 4-3 DE in the four man front. That or we get Mel Ingram, et al., and Soliai comes out on passing downs if he can make it.
