Is it really Egnew can't play or is he in the wrong system and not being utilized correctly? How many times was he the number one read for this offense in the redzone? I would think a TE with his height, weight, and hands would be a great redzone target, but that's just me!
Well, if you watched Egnew at Missouri, he was never able to separate there, either. He made his living on tough, contested catches. You almost never saw him get what you'd really consider "open", especially for the Big 12, where it seems like everybody is open. Running routes and getting open is about more than being big and fast. It's about using your hands and great timing and a bunch of other stuff. He never showed that in college and he still doesn't show it. At some point it's time to admit he'll never show it.
I like the idea of him as a red zone target, though. I've said that many times. Nobody gets open in the red zone, especially the tight red zone. It's about physical dominance and making a tough catch. Despite Egnew's reputation for being soft, as I said, making the tough catches is something he does very well. I absolutely think he has untapped potential as a red zone target.
