ESPN or NFL NETWORK for the DRAFT

I switch back and forth trying to get the most Fins coverage, I believe this year NFL network will have Dolphin War Room as well

NFL Network is slop. It's like everyone praises the place in belief that it's necessary to fit into a cutesy clique.

Why be alone when I can be a clone?

Meanwhile, that network produces perhaps one or two hours of competent programming a day. Otherwise it's nothing but garbage reruns of Top 10 lists, including during the weeks leading to the draft. It's hard to take the place seriously when they expect you to overlook the lack of effort, and obvious grab toward the almighty dollar. Reruns are pure profit. If anything, NFL Network is worse and more lazy now than when it debuted. They must laugh like heck in the back room at the reputation they've managed, while jogging in place and reaching for yet another showing of Top 10 Raiders.

Watching that network is like attending games at SunLife Stadium and failing to recognize that it's a patchwork failure, far inferior to its (league or sport specific) competitors, and an insult to the community, in this case the football-crazed viewers. In my case I can't be disgusted at their inept programming and priorities all year long and then excuse them on draft days. Besides, the graphics are over done, they focus overwhelmingly on the top prospects even more than ESPN does as opposed to spotlighting lower round guys and potential sleepers, and Mayock is nothing special, unless your notion of an ideal scouting report is, "Tape...tape...kid...tape...tape...kid...tape...kid...tape...tape...kid...tape."

ESPN remains the standard. They make a genuine varied effort all year long, with tons of draft-related chatter and programming, including the Gruden shows. Their draft coverage is just the right blend of info and entertainment. My only gripe was Keyshawn Johnson, who blabbed too much and didn't have the ammo. Likewise, Steve Young used up minutes and was quarterback obsessed, seldom mentioning another position. Now that those guys have been jettisoned or demoted, ESPN's coverage has returned to prior level. They really should allow Kiper and McShay to joust one-on-one but the heavyweight anchors still prize the draft spotlight.

Charlie Casserly and Mike Mayock are so much better than anyone on ESPN its not even funny.

Although if Miami drafts Coples, turn off NFL Network cause Mayock might explode with nasty things to say about the Fins. He can't stand the kid....lol

I don't think Casserly is better than anyone . . . at anything.

Agreed on nearly all fronts. To add to this, I think it bears nothing that the highlight packages on NFL Network of college prospects is hugely inferior to the ESPN versions. I've never read it anywhere but I think the dispute over football highlights on Sundays (ESPN is not allowed to show extended football highlights until after midnight, which forced them to cancel NFL Primetime) led to a similar embargo by ESPN of college football highlights for NFL Network.

The resulting scouting cut ups the NFL Network can show of college prospects is laughably inferior to the ESPN versions, focusing on low angle shots that show you nothing and the occasional low resolution high angle shot.

What results is something cut rate and cheap looking. The only thing besides Mayock (who, I agree, is an overrated analyst, which a distinct tendency to overrate players who remind him of himself... meaning, low talent overachievers, especially DBs) that makes their broadcast worth watching is Michael Lombardi and Jason LaCanfora being close to the stage and coming up with a few scoops ESPN doesn't get (the Pats drafting Mallet being a prime example). The year Mayock's voice gave out it was embarrassing how they trotted out Jamie Dukes and Charles Davis (and a selection of college coaches, this year I think it's Les Miles) and expected people to take their analysis of prospects at all seriously. I mean, Todd McShay gets hounded by draftniks for not watching enough film but it's pretty clear to me that he watches more than anyone at NFL Network not named Mike Mayock, and he's ESPN's relief pitcher. And yes, I'm including Charlie Casserly in that. He was once a general manager but all it takes is about 10 seconds of him talking about a particular prospect to see he's floating by on what remains of his reputation (though it's hard to see what that would be after the Texans debacle and Belichick putting his name through a wood chipper).

No comparison, to my mind. I still record the NFL Network broadcast just so I can fast forward to the Dolphins picks, but that says more about my latent OCD tendencies than it does about NFL Network putting on a good show.

I don't mind the ESPN guys, but Mayock sells the network for me. He has no agenda to push and is purely a butter talent evaluator than say a kiper or mcshay. Also Rich Eisen is easier on the soul than hearing Berman grumble and rumble..

Half this post is bashing NFL network for pre-draft coverage and playing stupid crap because its NFL based 100% all the time. ESPN can play any amount of anything related to sports all day long.

I can't agree because a couple of NFL live shows and Gruden interviewing future QBs to show their ability or discuss it, changes the fact that the NFL network crew is better at delivering solid draft analysis and coverage on draft days. Its more professional than show style.

The problem with ESPN is you never see Chris Berman until the NFL Draft begins, and then Berman has to ruin the draft, just like he ruins Sunday mornings and evenings on his pre and post game shows with his "Wooops, He could go all the way." I hate that crap. I like listening to Kiper and McShay having their disagreements though, so I probably switch back and forth. Mike Mayock does a great job on the NFL Network but than you have to listen to Mushmouth (Michael Irvin) and Deion Sanders who thinks he knows everything.

NFLN could be improved, especially with respect to second and third day prospects. But NFLN has much more depth than the dimwits at ESPN. Trey Wingo who does their NFL Live is such an imbecile that he is unwatchable. Their analysts are all fluff and it is one Captain Obvious after another with literally zero depth. Guys like Tedi Bruschi, Schlereth, Hoge are just bad at what they do.

CBS sports is running a show too and they have done a much better job with second and third day guys.

ESPN has a bunch of sportswriters and ex-players along with Kiper and McShay running their draft coverage. NFLN has a bunch of ex-GMs and ex-players (of which Mayock is one) running their coverage. I personally prefer the ex-GMs point of view because they've been there and done it. Guys like Charley Casserly, Mike Lombardi and a couple of other guys they have on the show frequently as guests give more credibility to what's being said.

However, I don't care for Jason LaCanfora...who I actually haven't seen much of these last couple of weeks.

I much prefer nfl network, but I don't have it anymore. It's going to have to be espn.
