Even on what is basically a 1 year deal, a lot of money to give Finnegan, who hasn't had a good season since '11 and will compete w/Taylor.
Dolphins could've kept Patterson for same money. They were either more worried about Patterson's health, think Finnegan is is better or both

Nothing wrong with that contract at all. I like that 2015 is not guaranteed. Good signing I say.

The deal's second year is for $5.4 million in base.

What does that mean?

It means the Dolphins are fully committed to Finnegan in 2014.

If he is bad in camp, he probably doesn't get cut because the investment is significant. Last year Finnegan was not very good for the Rams and that plus his big contract signed in 2012, is the reason he was cut.

If he gets injured, well, that's the breaks. Last year, Finnegan finished the season on injured reserve as he fractured an orbital bone in his face.

Finnegan said during a conference call on Friday he expects to compete for a starting job. He better. He's getting paid like it.

The point is, for a prove-it contract this deal shows the Dolphins are either very confident or very foolish that Finnegan will do exactly that. Prove it.

Finnegan should be an agent after his playing days.

Again, I do not mind Finnegan, but I would have made a play for another vet with that kind of money. I betcha Finnegan would still be on the market today.

Hopefully, they catch lightening in a bottle.

Worth it as he is like Grimes....He has to proof himself this year so a lot of motivation.

Not bad and an upgrade over Caroll. I dont see why the love fest for Nolan on here and Patterson can't stay healthy for the life of him.

Its basically a one year deal in which if he proves himself, he gets the second year. I see nothing that bad about this contract

This guy was rated the 2nd worst corner in the league last year....

I was thinking more of a major incentive-laden deal in which he could make mad money. Not like this. Yikes.

bad deal far better corners signed for less

I don't love this contract, even though it's better than the one we gave Grimes last year. Grimes seemed more worthy of the risk to me...I don't think Finnegan is likely to make a full return to form, though he'll hopefully be better than he was in St. Louis.

Finnegan has a much better upside then Patterson and is a much better tackler in the run game. Finnegan is also versatile and can play both safety positions. Patterson also hasn't played a full season since 2010. Essentially traded Patterson for finnegan which can pay off big time if he plays like he used to.

Typical prove it deal with a chance to keep him a second season at a reasonable rate if he play extremely well.
