The NFL can place sanctions on a team that signs Ricky if he wants to play hardball and they will do that to protect the integrity of any future contract signed. I believe Ricky is screwed and that's what he deserves.

That contract is not void until that debt is paid or completely cancelled. It seems highly unlikely that Ricky would be blessed with chapter 7 status when he has within his power to earn millions of future dollars.

I'm not getting into the criteria part. All I've ever maintained is, that filing could get him out of his deal with Miami, which it can.

However other things will have to be met first.

The NFL rules do not overide the US Law. US Law governs everything in this counrty. Even the NFL.

Exactly. All Ricky has to do to earn a living and have enough money to pay his debts is report for work. No judge is going to grant him bankruptcy simply because he chooses to smoke dope instead of work for a living.

Incorrect. We have his rights for 3 years. Ricky would have to show up enough each year to qualify for an accredited season. If Ricky decides to return to the NFL in the year 2025, we have his rights till the spring of 2028.

You're confusing two issues. Players need four years of credit in the league in order to gain unrestricted free agency. Ricky has already got that so accredited time is no longer relevant.

There is a precident for this. The NHL and Ottawa Senators sued a player after he sat out a year. The court agreed he signed a contract to play for x number of years, not until a certain date. He chose to sit out the final year, which meant he didn't play. Therefore, he hadn't fulfilled his portion of the contract and his rights still belonged to the Senators.
