First Half Impressions

Yeah I forgot all about the DL, that's a big disappointment for me thus far. We are not putting any pressure at all on the quarterback.
I feel the same way. Zgonina and Traylor are just not starting dt's anymore.

Good points and I agree with Muck above about CB. WTH is up with the free release we are giving that is allowing easy slants???? Not even contested!

And I can't disagree more wiht a majority of what I am reading here as far as teh QBs being "even". I hate to sound like a jerk, but in my eyes...these people's eyes are closed or have rose-colored glasses on. Throw the numbers out the window and focus directly on demeanor, coolness in the pocket, knowing where receivers are, and releasing a smooth ball....and Frerotte is head and shoulders above Feeley. I saw absolutely no difference in Feeley what-so-ever from last season. In fact, I thought I was watching a replay, especially on that screen where he just got all nervous and chucked it at people.

The corners are playing a lot of outside technique, where they try to take away the outside lane. They are allowing the receiver to release inside. It looks like they have played a little zone, though not a lot. I've seen mostly man to man.

3. Sammy Morris is the only runner I've seen in the game that seems to be willing to pick up a blitz. That's the most disappointing thing I've seen offensively. The backs have not done a good job of picking up the blitz. They also haven't done a good job of becoming outlet options against the blitz. There's no doubt in my mind that once Ronnie Brown gets his feet under him in the NFL, he's going to be the Dolphins back. He will be that receiving option as well as a much better blocker than any of the other backs on the team.

I noticed this as well. The thing that stuck out the most to me was Lamar Gordon completely missing blocks and/or not seeing the man he's supposed to block. That is why he'll never start in this league.

Ricky had a decent block or two. Gordon didn't block anyone. Morris seems to do everything well. Just lacks speed.

Yeah, 1 half of the first preseason game of the year and already that translates into us sucking. Remarkable

I realized that too, perhaps it is the linebackers or safeties faults because they are should be crashing down on those routes.

P.S. I am thoroughly unimpressed with Lamar Gordon. I think he is too hesitant, slow, and not willing to pick up the blitzer. All things we have heard throughout camp. He may be one who could get the dump if he keeps this up over preseason

What are your thoughts after the first half...just wanted to share mine.

1) I thought Boston looked very good. Ive never been a huge fan of his but I must admit he looks like he's in good shape and ran some nice routes. He could be big for us.

I agree. Boston look sharp. He will only get better....he has'nt played a game in what...18 months?

SuperDuperFan said:
2) Howard and Lee are on my cut list.

Howard is awful...Lee is worse.

3) Disappointed in the O-line and the secondary. From what I saw Middleton looked good, but its against second stringers.

The O-line was o.k. in my opinion. The Bears sure are blitzing a lot for a preseason game. The pre snap reads have to be fixed but...it is the first preseason games.

4) QB's looked OK but it was hard to tell. They didnt have much time to throw. Frerotte looked like he got the ball out quick but threw behind Gimore when he was wide open. I wanna see what Sage does.

I think Feeley looked ok....the drop by Thompson really hurt. They were moving the ball and that was a big play.

Gus looks pretty good. He is doing it against the second teamers though.

SuperDuperFan said:
5) Ricky looked ok but did he seem to lose his footing a bit?

Yes...he lost his footing. To me he looked like he was rushing things. He has'nt played in 18 months though. The game is probably moving really fast right now.

I cant wait for the second half and for next scrimmage to see how gus does vs starters.

I agree.

A few things I noticed:

Kevin Carter is good...really good. I always thought he was a pretty decent player but he was really getting through the line tonight (in the brief time he played).

The P.I. call on Sam was crap.

Tillman could be pretty good. He has excellent coverage on a third down play.

Chris Richard looks pretty good.

Lorenzo Diamond will take Don Lee's roster spot.

Crowder looks tentative.

I agree with the Oline thought KB. I don't know why ppl are saying they look bad. The pass protection is definitely improved. They just need to work on sealing off angles to create creases in the running game.
AJ made vernon look bad on that play by not stepping up into the pocket. He could've easily side stepped Urlacher on that play and it wasn't like he didn't see him coming. AJ definitely needs to work on his pocket awareness cause you can't ask the O-line to completely seal off every angle and lane.

It is my impression that this offense is going to do alot of damage in the middle of the field. Ronnie Brown, with his receiving ability, should have a blast feasting on LBs in open field matchups in the flat and down the middle.

Boston is looking good tonight, if he can keep this up I can see him unseating Booker for the #2 spot.

All of that falls on him staying healthy, which is always a huge question with him.

That's another thing I forgot to say...Lamar Gordon is clueless on pass protection....I am beginning to think if he does'nt work out that issue he'll get cut.

Exactly. I also paid close attention to Rex Hadnot on the first two drives. In fact, he was the only player I watched on the Dolphins first two drives. He did an outstanding job, IMO. I didn't see him give an inch in pass protection, but I think he's better when he has a guy lined up on him in run blocking than he is when he's asked to block in space. That's always been my question about him as a center. Can he get out and make the reach blocks on the linebackers?

I knew you would atleast be able to see what's actually going on. The OL has been just fine, but the blitz pickups are not there. This is where Ronnie will really help.

Yep. There is more to being a running back than just running. You have to be able to block and pick up the blitz, and you have to be able to provide a good receiving outlet for the quarterback. Ronnie will give that to Miami.
