For all this stupid crap about Philbin not being a motivator

Players can be motivated by fear, by success, by camaraderie with the teammates, etc. But it is pretty damn clear that guys at this level need to be motivated by something or someone. When you are making more money than you ever thought possible, it's pretty easy to lose your motivation. It's pretty easy to get comfortable. You think guys that play for Belichick aren't motivated to play their @sses off for him because they know he will cut ties with them in a second if they don't? You think Patriots players don't see the payoff of following Belichick because he makes them winners? You ever see the way Seahawks players go crazy with Carroll during and after games? They love the guy. Jim Harbaugh is so over-top-intense, you think that doesn't rub off on his players? Did you see Rex Ryan and the love-fest he was having with his team on Sunday?

Philbin is an emotionless stiff who wants a business-like atmosphere around the team. Stay even-keeled, don't complain, don't make waves, etc. He dumped a lot of veterans who made mistakes, got out of line, complained. That tells current players to keep their heads down. None of this leads to players wanting to bust it for their coach. Philbin seems like he'd be a great mortician or monk. NFL head coach, not so much.

You just listed off 3 or 4 coaches each having success all with different personality traits then you conclude by saying Philbin's personality won't work because its different. smh

Well... Since it was reported that he is not seen as a good motivator by some of his own players and some of the lockeroom, your assessment is extremely inaccurate.

I have not seen a single article that states a player saying that Philbin in not seen as a good motivator. Maybe some speculation by the media, but not one single player.

You hear this a lot on the forum and I just don't get it. Lots of coaches are animated and loud....and lots of coaches are stoic and stiff (Tom Landry anyone), and both types have seen success.

I actually disagree, I think Philbin did an amazing job motivating players all season. Did you see the post about where our offensive linemen where ranked (except for Pouncey). We lost 2 of those linemen in that Martin Incognito fiasco that threatened to derail the season. I think Philbin is a HUGE reason why we made it through that. Also the linebacker move from last year single-handily caused us the playoffs. Philbin took a team with a joke for an offensive line and with linebackers that couldn't stop a runny nose and almost got us into the playoffs, while also beating all 3 teams we faced that are now in the AFC playoffs!

This ra-ra crap is stupid! Tony Dungee was an awesome coach whose demeanor is much like Philbins.

SOO IS THAT THE REASON ,? that Cog wasnt brought back after his suspention was up ?? SO that it can be used as another scapegoat just like Martin used Cog to get out of Miami ? Noooooo the F.O. HAD THERE CHANCE TO BRING BACK COG , and didnt soo lets not use that as an excuse , we beat pittsburge ,cincy , colts , Pats ,and chargers , No excuse , just go back and look at the Jests game , Miami had Not One Bit of Motivation , the Defence looked pitiful they were just standing around , you want to see a motivater ,look at josh mcdaniels ,if he only had better coaching skills he would be one hell of a coach , he Motivates his players like no other , and a Team needs that , esp if we dont have any leaders on defence or offence , a team needs a leader on both sides of the ball , look at ray lewis ,and tell me he didnt light a fire under his players asses , YOU GOT TO HAVE MOTIVATION , You got to know how to get the best out of the players you have, Heart and motivation gose hand and hand,it dosent matter college or pro you have got to have Motivation , and we didnt have any sunday we looked like we was playing a preseason game, the first time we played the jests ,how many sacks did we have? 6-7 ? The jests players were more Motivated than we were , it was like they were playing for a playoff spot instead of us ,and who was they playing for ? sexy rexy ,we need players that really want to win , instead of just picking up there pay check at the end of each week , Martin wasnt a player that loved the game , or he wouldnt have went home crying , and Ireland needs to be releaved of his job , because he dosent know how to pick talent , dedication heart and motivation are 3 of the most important parts of playing football and having a winning team ..thats what i was always taught back when i played , and i still stand by that ..

I believe it was David Hyde that reported it last week. Its not my opinion I am stating just reflecting what I read. I mean I also do not think he is all that great of a motivator but I am not stating my opinion here.

He also stated that Philbin trying to motivate via reading off index cards did not help matters. I mean to be honest that would be self explanatory.

What is so special about Joe Philbin that he has to come back?

What are you talking about? Cog is still suspended with pay because the investigation is still going on.

I believe that was in the Barry Jackson article but yes didn't see any players names attached, we rarely do. I am trying to wrap my head around how he/the team was good enough to beat the 3 AFC division winners as you stated and also the Chargers who made the playoffs and the Steelers who just missed the playoffs, but then what, become dumb and not a motivator in some of those bad losses?

Give me the pro bowl QB play of a Brady or Rodgers and I will take either the rah rah coach or the stoic it won't matter

How are Belichick, Harbaugh, Carroll, and Ryan all that different? All four are ridiculously intense. Carroll, Harbaugh, and Ryan all seem to connect with their players on an intense level. They celebrate, they scream, they show emotion. Belichick connects with his players - you may not see it in press conferences, but you see it on the sidelines.

Philbin doesn't even speak with his players during a game.

He is reading off cards after a game. I have seen coaches, great coaches not use cards and say some really silly stuff....who cares? I for one would rather a coach be thinking about how the team needs to improve from the game they just played as apposed to preparing a 3 minute ra-ra speech after the game. Also, no article I have seen, including from Hyde last week said anything about Dolphins players saying anything....ANYTHING negative about Philbin.

OMG, this is getting so GD ridiculous people making up stuff to prove their point. He absolutely talks to players during the game!

The last 2 games performance all around was terrible and Philbin was the head coach and is ultimately to blame. The team came out flat for both games and were embarrassed and that is on Philbin.

Ross ended up with Philbin as a consolidation prize only after no one else any good would take the job. If Harbaugh, Gruden, or Cowher had wanted the job Philbin would not be here.

Philbin will more than likely get another year and let's all hope he does better. But some of us are just fed up of going through year after year of mediocrity and want better.

C'mon, it was exaggeration. My point is that Philbin does not interact much with the players during the game. I have never seen him gather the offense on the sidelines and speak with them. I have barely seen him speak with Tannehill during the game.

Then I suggest getting a O-Line that can block and keep your QB up-right and LB's that can tackle.....or it doesn't matter who the coach is.

Here you are. And Barry Jackson is pretty good too. One of the more trusted media source on Dolphins news unlike the other hacks.

### Some Dolphins players privately believe coach Joe Philbin, reserved by nature, needs to improve as a motivator and in how he prepares teams emotionally for games. The flat demeanor and unemotional “stay the course, don’t get too high or low” message doesn’t resonate with some Dolphins and was reflected in their play at times. And reading to his players off index cards isn’t exactly inspiring.

And I am not saying a ra-ra guy is what we need as we have had both sides of the spectrum in Philbin and The Meatball. Someone in the middle that looks like they care would be nice.
