Former Dolphins scout threatening to sue the team after contract not renewed

Seattle signed Garrett before they became aware of the heart condition. He was signed on a Thursday and they became aware of the heart condition 2 days later. Also, Garret was allowed to keep his signing bonus projected to be about $90K, and not his entire salary. Seattle followed the rules regarding signing bonuses, so I don't see where this great charity is that you are talking about.

The sixth-round pick out of Marshall was waived less than 24 hours after signing his rookie contract on Thursday.

However, the story doesn't end there though. Scott was released by the team because a heart ailment kept him from passing his physical.

"After undergoing an extensive physical with our medical staff last week, Garrett's examination revealed a rare heart condition that will prevent him from any on-field participation in the near future," Seahawks general manager John Schneider said in a statement. "We think highly of Garrett as a person and as a football player. The team is committed to supporting Garrett in the months to come and will continue to help him determine his next steps."

I don't know why people here are so careless about this guy.

Imagine working for a company for 17 years and having a sick wife, and one day your fired and lose All your benefits.

Now we don't know the whole story, So I'm not blaming anyone, but if that's how the story went, I don't care if the dolphins are my favorite team, that's wrong on every level.

Growing up I had a fairly comfortable life, my mum and dad both had ok jobs, we paid our bills, had some cash left over for a family trip in the summer etc.

Then my mum got sick and hasn't been able to work for about 6 years. Whilst we have state healthcare, it was to mums benefit to get some extra treatment on top of this.

So my parents income was more than halved, we couldn't afford the mortgage on our house let along medical bills. My dad worked all day 7 days a week to support us. My grandparents paid our electricity bills and helped with the mortgage.

And you know what? When the company my dad worked for got hit by the recession, none of this mattered to them when they laid him off.

Long story short, im sure the Dolphins are very sad about this mans wife, however they employ him, not her and her medical are not the teams responsibility. This man was employed as a scout, the Miami Dolphins coach and gm are in a must win year, they should have whatever support system they feel they need. If the GM feels that this man is not performing as he wants in regards to his job as a Miami Dolphins scout, then Hickey is perfectly entitled to fire him imo. Its very sad to hear about his wife, but its not her than we employ and this has been the situation for what 10 years? surely this guy knew that with GM changes it was very possible the entire scouting staff would be gutted?

What the Seahawks did or didn't do with that draft pick is a strawman anyway but didn't the Dolphins pay that DT from Hard Knocks that suffered a season ending injury? Can't remember his name but I believe the Jets plucked him off our practice squad and after he suffered an ACL or something they cut him and we picked him back up and paid him.

That CBS story cites this story as its source that Seattle knew about the condition before, except that KJR story never makes that claim Seattle knew about the condition beforehand. I'll give Seattle the benefit of the doubt though since rookies don't usually sign before getting a physical. Seattle did the right thing.

The guy you're talking about is Isaako Aaitui. But that's not the way it happened. We cut him. The Jets picked him up. Then he got injured and spent that year out of football. The next year he signed with the Saints and was cut and then we picked him up.

The Seahawks thing is not meant to be a one to one comparison. It's simply emblematic of a very different mindset.

If the physical took place a week before he signed the contract then it stands to reason the Seahawks were well aware. There are medical tests that take a while to come back, but presumably the Seahawks would simply wait until the results were fully in before signing anyone. Otherwise there wouldn't be much point to the tests. After all, there's no rush.

I didn't say they are recession hit, they could buy a small country if they wanted. They are however a business and this is what happens, it's a cold heartless world out there. Hickeys job is very much on the line, if this guy isn't working exactly how he wants his scout or he feels his arrangements impact his effectiveness then i get why he would seek to replace him.

Yup, that was him, good memory. I could have sworn we did something for him after but the archives don't go back that far.

Anyway the Seahawks thing is a nice story, happy for the kid, but if they don't pay him and follow the rules does he have the right to sue? Is it even a story? And in the Dolphins case short of donating the guy a lifetime salary with benefits maybe there was no way to avoid a lawsuit. Maybe they offered him severance above and beyond what they are required and he's suing anyway. Either way it shouldn't be a story.

There is nothing illegal about it, but it indicates he was probably fired because his wife medical bills was increasing the healthcare premium Ross had to shell out each year and he didn't want to do it anymore....so he sent Hickey to him and cancel the arrangement they had knowing the guy was going to refuse and in turn lose his job.....Ross is a terrible person IMO and the reason we will have problems having a normal franchise in Miami....I hope he sells the team, losing confidence in him each day....
