I've heard it suggested that Vontae may be battling injury.
I'll say this though. When Joe Philbin was asked about it, his response did not make it seem like it was injury related. He seemed to me like he was trying very hard to defuse what he knew could be an explosive situation in the press.
I think there's a strong possibility that they truly are trying to decide whether Vontae should be the guy that comes on the field in nickel packages while Marshall moves into the slot, or whether Marshall should be the guy that comes onto the field only in nickel situations...or if they would rotate that based on matchups.

i can understand moving vontae into the slot depending on matchups...sure...but if there's only gonna be 2 cbs on the field at any given time vontae needs to be one of them...without a doubt
Good to hear about Vernon stepping up. If we can get good production out of him in Year 1, that's a big deal. There were a lot of people who didn't know a lot about Vernon, so the pick received mostly mixed reviews, but I doubt there are too many 3rd Rounders who would give Long any issues. I doubt there are too many pass rushers from this draft (regardless of position) who would do so.
So, how come SMITH shut him down and made him look like "Pop Warner"? I remember that game. And I can't remember ANYONE else coming CLOSE to doing that to A JOHNSON!! Repeat, NOBODY ELSE...EVER.

This whole Vontae situation is becoming interesting. You get so many mixed signals. You hear he's looked just fine in camp...yet he's losing reps to Marshal. Is Marshal looking really good or what? Vontae is the best player in our secondary IMO...but maybe Philibin isn't a fan of his inconsistency. He could be sending a message...or he could just really like Marshal better.

i'm with truth by the way...clays drops are a concern now...it's over and over...the pff guy said he dropped 2 cupcakes the other day...he dropped a td yesterday and now today more damn drops...i don't get it...he's got pillow soft hands...must be the whole running different type of routes at te from what he's used to...i don't know...but he better fix it

All the VD stuff is much ado about nothing. Just scheme related stuff trying to develop players and give us a little diversity. Not even a light a fire under his rear attempt. The slot position in football and the inside short to intermediate game is vitally important to control. I bet they are just looking into ways to scheme this and giving their best players reps in these schemes. VD will be able to shut down cover and blitz from these spots. Charles Woodson anyone???
