Game-Planning Gentleman Easy!!!

Guys, lets take a step back and think about what we seen last night. We seen a pretty talented Dolphin football team vs a well groomed machine in the Pittsburgh Steelers on a wet and sloppy field.

Keep in mind, Nick Saban has yet to prepare for his opponent, so when the Steelers blitz on every play, the O line has no game plan to use for it. IM sure if it was a regular season game, Houck would have installed blitz pickup pacakges and zones just for that and coordinated running plays with Linehan. I don't like the idea that our coaching staff doesn't even watch film of the opponent and prepare for it, but we have to keep this in mind when we are playing the games.

We are learning a brand new offense and defense, remember that. Vs a team that has been playing the same offense and defense for the last 14 years in Pittsburgh. Do we have some glaring weakness? Sure we do. And I think some of the better posters on the board would agree with me when I bring them to front;

Center: This is a glaring weakness and game planning or not, we need more productive play here, especially for the running game. Mckinney can't move anyone off the line and is consistenly pushed back into his own RB/QB. We can all hope that someone who is better than Mckinney is cut from another team.

QuarterBack: Can we please stop arguing about who is better Feeley or Frerrote? Yes Feeley had a good PCT last night, but threw dinks and dunks vs the Steelers B team. Frerrote had a terrible night, but was throwing the ball downfield, trying to make the Steelers pay for those Blitz's. He hit Welker once and besides that, he under threw everyone else. Lets keep in mind, Mcmichaels had his worst game as a Dolphin, preseason or not.

The point here is, neither one of these guys is good enough to be the starting QB in this league. I think Gus gives us a better chance to win because of his knowledge of the system and his ability to stay calm under pressure.

With that being said, since we have such talented backs in Ricky and Ronnie, there is still a good chance that once we start game planning to expose our opponents weakness, we can still be a surprise team. And we have nothing to lose at all, bringing in Tim Couch or Rohan Davey. I know , I know, Preseason is already over. But they could get up to speed quickly.

We have some positives to look at;
David Boston played well and looks like he will make the team
Wes Welker is Miami's Wayne Chrebet
Travis Daniels is a cornerback in the NFL and plays like one
Reggie Howards play seem to improve
The starting D although gave up some big plays, held the Steelers starting O to 0-6 on 3rd downs, EXCELLENT!

Channing Crowder was the steal of our draft.
Vern Carey's name wasn't called all of last night, he must be doing his job.

Sammy Morris: IM very happy we have this guy. We keep talking about Ricky and Ronnie while this guy continues to make plays for the team and avd 4 ypc last season and plays special teams.

Vonnie Holliday: Was getting a good push the whole time he was in there.

Yerimah Bell: Is playing well!!!

Next week we play the Bucs and Nick Saban will actually break their team down and game plan for them. That means study their weakness and power.. Don't toss in the towel. Yes we might not make the playoffs this season, but we will get better every week out there, that im pretty sure of. And next season, we will start the year with Travis Daniels and Will Poole as our corners, both under the age of 25.

To hit on a playoff spot this year, we need a few lucky breaks. We need for Tim Couch to come in here and play his *** off, take the starting Job and play like a number 1 pick should play. I know thats alot to ask, but stranger things have happen in the NFL. Muybe even Rohan Davey, that would be great too.

We also need that kid from the Eagles to start taking snaps at Center. Anyone know whats going on with him? Or a Center to be released from a team that can still play.

No need to throw the towel in yet. Lets see where we are next week when we play the Bucs.

GO FINS!!!

You contradict yourself by saying "We are learning a brand new offense". Then saying you think Davey or Couch could come in and get up to speed quickly. No way any QB is gonna come in and learn a whole new offense to them and get up to speed quickly. Especially if we are already at the end up preseason by the time we would get one of these QB's.

I agree with a lot of what you said, but you're begging if you think Tim Couch is going to come in, start this year, and pull a Jim Plunkett. I'm all for giving Couch a look and signing him if his arm is healed. However, even if we do, he won't have an impact till next year in the rosiest of scenarios.

I agree with you about Mckinney. Isn't it amazing that the Fins have 2 Hall of Famers, arguably the 2 greatest of all time, at the center position and now this low grade crap. :yell:

Kind of like having marino UNDER center for all those years and now having this crap at QB?

Yeah, Nice post, I agree with everything you said. How do you know though, that we're going to game plan and break down the Bucs this week. Don't get me wrong, i'm all for it and hopefully that will give us a better feel for what we're really looking at, but, did Saban say that at some point. Thanks, and again, great job!

Very good post. But there is a disconcerting aspect. Neither team gameplanned. In that instance, the game is decided by base talent and we were a distinct second place.

Pittsburgh played Monday night and had two full days less preparation than us. Plus we had played two games to one for them. Normally those factors would lead to a decided edge in our favor and a probable win. Some of you may have noticed the pointspread on the game was very low, down to 3. There was one thread here last week surprised it wasn't closer to 7. The low number and the heavy money on the Dolphins was 100% due to the theoretical situational advantage we had. Wiseguy bettors love to disregard talent in favor of situational aspects. I'm in Miami now but exchanged emails with a few friends back in Vegas last week and we agreed the pointspread was ignoring the glaring talent gap, preseason or not.

Let's not get impatient and try to plug holes via castoffs. That will never get us anywhere close to the destination. We need gobs of superior talent to catch the high echelon teams. Plucking off the waiver wire is a stopgap waste of time in almost every instance. Saban just needs to identify areas of need, maintain as many draft pick and dollar advantages as possible, and make damn sure his free agency and draft operations are at peak brilliance beginning next spring.

Oh yeah, the other postion where we have gone from 29 years of Hall Of Fame personell to our current junk. The crazy part is decent QB and Center play would make this offense very respectable. I'm praying it somehow gets better as the year goes on.

But you can improve depth and special teams with castoffs as you say. Teams with superior talent will shed older players for younger ones with cuts. If their 2nd/3rd string veterans are better than ours...go get them. When younger guys come in and have lower cap numbers teams will shed good players that aren't starters for that team.

i'm so sick of hearing this excuse. you know what bro? no one else is game planning either. yet they are scoring. in fact, the 49ers scored 3 tds last night, how many did we get? how many has our first team offense had this preason in 3 games? 1? and that was an arrant throw that we got lucky on. you need to open your eyes. we can't block anyone and our qbs are 2nd stringers. until we get new people in here nothing is going to change on offense.

Yes, good points. I was referring to the post atop this thread implying we might be able to find a new starting center and other gems on the waiver wire. I wasn't thinking about depth. This year we are in a good situation regarding waiver pickups because I think it defaults to the weakest teams from 2004 receiving priority.

Normally that is overhyped, picking up someone else's players at the last minute. Teams are reluctant to jettison someone they have worked with for years or months in favor of a less familiar guy who someone else gave up on. We have no idea how agressive Saban will be in that area. If his NFL scouting crew is very confident in their evaluations perhaps there will be more turnover than I'm expecting. Hey, Wes Welker wasn't on our team at this point last year, if I remember correctly.

Because Saban said so. Griese just said that Saban only spent a half day in planning this game. Saban is a master film guy who is going to start looking at Denver real soon after the tampa game. This stuff is pure vanilla. mcmicheal obviously didnt think much of this game and chambers was not thrown to much. Those are not bad things, those are good things for when the season starts.

Just look at the COlts Bears game. I would bet you 1 million dollars that the Bears would not have won that game if it were Regular season. Preseason does not mean anything and teams dont even use the same offensive plays or defensive schemes
