Gardener Situation Is Interesting...missed Practice.

i dont think gardener will get cut til june 1 of next year,at the earliest, due to cap ramifications...i think wanny would play out the season and see what happens this year before he cuts dg...

quality at DE since he is slated to start as a DE.

He is slated to start at DE, but he is also slated to move inside on passing downs. He would also slide inside if Bowens or Chester go down, since their health is almost as curious as DG's expect him to see alot of time at DT as well.

For once I agree with Dajesus. I think this thing may be getting blown somewhat out of proportion due to the fact that we have nothing else to talk about. I for one am hoping he comes in and displays the type of power and agility at DE that made him one of the premier DT's in the league [when healthy.]

There is still no substantiated evidence to any of this so I will continue to take it with a grain of salt. If DG is cut, so be it; hopefully we'll go out and get another quality player from somewhere. If he stays, then I'll continue to cheer for him and the rest of the "Tropical Swarm D" the same way I always have: with a passion!

Hello, I'm the BBI resident capologist  I would like to take the opportunity to correct some misinformation about how the cap works. Please, no offense....this is just educational in nature, not any attempt to hash Bills/Fins rivalry BS. While, my Bills cap spreadsheet is about 95% correct, my Miami spreadsheet is likely to be only roughly 75% correct.

My numbers are:

Year: salary/bonus/cap hit(numbers in Millions)

2002: 2.635/2.15/4.785
2003: 5.72/1.8/7.52
2004: 5.8/1.8/7.6
2005: 5.86/1.8/7.66
2006: 6.75/1.8/8.55
2007: 7.25/1.8/9.05

Gardener CANNOT be traded because of cap implications. Miami would have to restructure contracts and/or release players to accomodate this. Why? Well, whenever a player is traded, the ENTIRE amortized bonus accelerates into the League Year a player is traded. Thus, that's $1.8 million x 6 yrs = $10.8 million. His present cap number is $4.785 million. That's an extra $6.015 million cap hit on 2002. While that's wonderful for 2003 (he would count ZERO), that's highly unlikely that the Fins could find the cap space. Fins are under the cap by about $3 million, but still need about $1 million of that to sign draft choices, thus Fins would need about $4 million of additional cap space to trade.

Releasing Gardener: Very possible. Why? Well, players released after June 1st have their remaining amortized bonus spread over 2 seasons. Thus, DG's cap hit for 2002 would only be $1.8 million. That's a savings of his $2.635 million salary AND $350,000 reporting bonus (April 11th/Miami.com). The rest of the amortized bonus of $9 million applies to the 2003 cap. His cap number for 2003 is already scheduled to be $7.52 million, thus this is only $1.48 million extra and actually is very manageable. However, due to the restructured deal, the pay cut he accepted in April of $2.635 million can be recoup as either Likely-to-be-earned (LTBE) bonuses or Not-Likely-to-be-earned (NLTBE) bonuses. Also, due to his injury and decreased production in 2001, most of that $2.635 million is likely to be NLTBE in anture and apply to the 2003 cap, thus releasing Gardener NOW actually saves 2003 cap space.

I know it's clear as mud, but his release could alleviate the "cancerous" presence (if true) and future potential cap problems

Ciao Peace

Release Gardener and ya take a HUGE $11.2 million "dead cap" hit in 2003. $2.24 million x 5yrs= $11.2 million. That's an extra cap hit of almost $4 million. Even though I'm a Bills fan, cap reality makes this somewhat unlikely. Fins would save $2.635 salary, $350,000 reporting bonus, and the incentives that replaced the pay cut (cap benefit likely 2003). If incentives earned in 2002 are NLTBE, then they apply to 2003 cap and the extra cap hit will actually will be less than the $4 million

Where did you come up with that 11.2 million hit?? I have found zero reporst of gardener's signing bonus on his original contract but I know for DAMN sure... the Dolphins didn't give him a $16 million dollar bonus when they signed him (eight year contract times the 2.24 million you listed.) In fact in another post I figured his signing bonus to be roughly 9million... therefor a 5.5million dollar hit if we were to release him... average out what his base salary would be... and we almost wouldn't be losing anything... exccept for his play. But, if he is injured it doesn't matter anyways.

Still, where is your source for your signing bonus information from??

What I have found is many conflicting reports.

But... from http://nfl.kffl.com/teams/players/GARDENERDARYLMIADL.shtml

it says this which is from before he restructured his deal... "He is due to earn $5.27 million in base salary in 2002 with a cap number of $6.83 million." ... and ... "The team saved $2.3 million of cap room and did not have to prorate signing bonus money eating up future caps. "

If those base and total cap numners are correct, that would mean his bonuses for this year totaled $1.56 million. Subtract the reported $350,000 reporting bonus you stated he received, and that is a pro-rated signing bonus value of $1.2 million. If the report above is correct than you base... bonus... and total numbers for this year are off.

My numbers have $1.8 million/season bonus amortization, so by your numbers I'm only off by $240,000. The $350,000 reporting bonus is part of the restructuring done in April, so ya can't subtract that.

The bonus amortization depends on how many yrs the bonus can be spread out. The amended CBA that was passed a few months ago included a clause that changed the amortization from 6 to 7 yrs, however I do not think that previously signed deals can be included. Gardener's original bonus, most likely, can only be spread out over 6 yrs

Question...

If this is the case... and signing bonus amortization is for only 6 years of the deal. Wouldn't that mean there is only 3 more years or pro-rated signing bonus to count?? This will be Gardener's third year of an 8-year deal. If this is correct... that would mean Gardener would the Dophins would actually SAVE $300,000 on next year's salary cap by releasing him.

"Burnett will start because he is a real DE, Gardener isn't"

More from the iceblizzard book of knowledge. You crack me bro.

Yeah but now he has all of that extra bulk and won't be able to turn the corner as fast as Burnett.

I thought he lost some weight? Besides what are you talking about 'turning the corner' for? Burnett will be the one going around. Gardener will be going THROUGH the tackle/TE lol

Hey, we had trouble stopping the run last year. So Gardener at LE makes sense. The Panthers did the same thing to us. They put Sean Gilbert at LE to shut down the run. DG is a load. He's gonna bull rush his man. If they double team him, then Jason Taylor is gonna run wild on the right side. And DG's got good speed. So if they slide protection, he'll barrell in there soon enough.

Still, the Burnett signing is gonna prove to be SOLID. This guy will bring that leadership to the DL that we've missed. And hopefully he'll keep DG's attitude in check.
