Arrogance I can handle because the coaches all over the league are just like him. But trying to get fired because you think you are all that and a big time head coach... well screw Adam Gase then
Adam Gase checked a lot of boxes. Arrogance is a positive. Young arrogant guy is an ideal combination. If you click there it can last a long time, just like an elite quarterback. Gase seemed to be sharp, unlike some of our recent hires and specifically Sparano. You can't hire Tony Sparano and expect him to out think teams in this league.
I don't regret supporting Gase but as time progressed the negatives surfaced. A young arrogant guy should have the press eating out his his hand. Stand up there with a knowing grin and give them doses of irony and wit and clever. They'll love you for it and so will the entire fan base. It is unbelievable that so many coaches and athletes somehow brainstorm that an adversarial relationship with the media is beneficial, or makes them look good. It makes them look like a dolt. You can't win, especially in this era when that reporter can merely speak to someone else in the organization and have a related tweet 2 minutes later. Now the coach is on the defensive when he should be king of the town.
If you win with bizarre regularity then you can stand up there and act like Belichick, Saban or Popovich. With apologies to Popovich. He does display many of the qualities I described earlier. Wonderful blend of daggers and tongue in cheek respect. Likewise Belichick, if you dig deep enough.
Nick Saban is pure lowlife. Nothing hidden there.
Gase also irritated me with the Jay Ajayi situation. That is a very valuable piece of an offense. Power running games force the defense to congest and respect, opening up every other possibility for the offense. Ajayi changed games and the course of the season mostly by himself in 2016. Then he's gone in a flash, for minimal return. Gase was championed here for that move. Had to be done. Ajayi is a cancer.
Now Gase is viewed as the cancer. Other players have complained. So does that mean we retreat and rethink that maybe Ajayi wasn't the cancer, and that Gase reacted too abruptly and for the detriment of the team? Nope. Dave Wannstedt with his 42-31record with the Dolphins triggered simplistic conventional wisdom and will remain the guy who ruined the franchise for decades to come, just like Donna Shalala on Canes boards triggered similar and is blamed for everything. If Manny Diaz doesn't work out, that will be Shalala's fault. Ajayi was a cancer. Then we found out Gase was a fellow cancer. Comfort food. We're doing well. Let's keep going and see what we can react to tomorrow.
I am convinced Ryan Tannehill leads to incredible tension for a head coach and particularly an offensive type like Gase. The designs are fine but not everything will unfold as designed. That is raw normalcy. You just need a bit of help from that quarterback. Can you please bail out one play? One? Anywhere? Turn a negative into a positive? Gase is no doubt part tape guy who looked at that frame and arm and occasional accuracy and concluded that he could turn Ryan Tannehill into a big winner. Get in line.
I don't doubt that Adam Gase is thrilled to get out of line. He is overstating his likelihood of quickly commanding a new position among only 7 possibilities. But that is typical of a young arrogant guy.
The first litmus test question for the prospective new coach should be...what do we do with Ryan Tannehill? Anyone who responds with an upbeat assessment should be escorted out of the seat and out the door within 30 seconds.
Hand him a sandwich
