I never expected him to stay here, anyway.

We'll always have that 2013 pick of Tom Brady. Wish him the best.

We cant have both our backup safeties not be able to play defensively. Every move isn't about culture, this was out of necessity.

It's the new word to throw around with every move we make or don't make.

Good, one less mediocre player coming back from a 6-10 team. Change is needed. Good luck with the Giants.

He will be missed. His leadership and versatility made him a vital part of the roster. However, Miami can definitely find better talent to replace him. Wish him success.

    Great special teamer

Aikens is a better athlete and also good on special teams, is younger too.

    We won’t lose much

I agree that he isn’t a starting caliber playing on defence for our team or any team for that matter.

    But

He is a pro bowl ST player that was a captain and an emotional leader on the team. He also had a lot of versatility in that fact that he can step in to a backup role in any position on the secondary. He was also cheap.

    I’ll miss him

I'm surprised we moved on. He made a lot of plays on Special Teams. It won't be a problem replacing him though.

Hes had durability issues lately & isnt exactly good when he starts at safety. I am happy we kept Aikens & I think we resigned a cheaper Lucas also

Walt Aikens takes his spot on ST. He probably becomes ST captain now.

Special Teams is dying. Almost all kicks go out of bounds or everyone almost always call for fair catches on punt returns

Aikens is a good player on ST too. I don’t think losing Thomas hurts so much as I’m just sad to see a good guy like him go.

And don’t forget the block in the back flags on about 40% of all returns.

We also lost Damien Williams on ST as well as Fede. They will have some guys to replace but we seem to have good coaching there so I am not too worried.

I've still got so many memories of him and Rambo taking bad angles late year and playoffs in 2016...let it go. It was so disappointing to have a rare Dolphins playoff berth be completely derailed not by being on our backup QB but more by being on our backup safeties who couldn't stop a simple run from being a big run and a dump off pass from being a TD.

I remember that pick. It always felt like we cheated in that one since Thomas was only signed from San Fran or something that week and he hadn't been indoctrinated into our culture of turning wins into losses, so he actually made a game-sealing play that no tenured Dolphin at that point would have.

He's a free agent and I don't really expect him to be resigned considering we have 5 DE's locked under contract already as well as two others...Malveaux & Woodard, who was just signed in January.

Not true. The NFL average was about 2 kick returns per game and 2 punt returns per game. So 4 per game, per team. And there wasn't a single team in the NFL that had more fair catches than returns.

If you're referring to Thomas, he had 1 penalty last season...Holding

The special teams unit ended with only 16 penalties all season
which placed them 11th best in the league

Not a huge lose , but a good special teams player. Good Luck in NY. Say we offer NY Parker and 2nd this year and next year for Beckham. I can only dream, but he is working his way out of NY..

I bet with this team. It would come out better overall if the rules for the entire season were. 1. Don't return any punts or kicks out of the endzone. 2. Don't field any punts inside the 15 yard line. 3. Only attempt returns if the game is on the line and you need a big play. These rules will cut down on penalties, turnovers and will result in better field position overall. Also it will reduce injuries.

6 out of the last 9 years we were in
the top 10 in fewest penalties for special teams

Other than those two poor seasons in 2016 and 2015
we have been one of the least penalized special teams groups

You keep Thomas over Akien simple math both are great ST players but Akins simply is a huge liability on the field and Thomas is definitely a upgrade when playing the slot or Safty positions as a backup. Lucas more of the same. Special teams are huge but those players need to be able to play when a starter go down. Now Maurice Smith might be that guy but naw on the other 2.

Good stuff - I just meant the NFL in general. Flags on like 40% of all run backs.

Yeh. Block in the back is pretty much a guaranteed call. The worst part is that a lot of them have no impact on the run.
