Gil Brandt: Dolphins want to trade down

If they're going to draft need, I hope they trade down. I don't think we'll get good value at o-line at #19 or #50. If not, then it just depends on who's available as always.

Usually, I am ok with trading down, but I caution Hickey to not outsmart himself. We need an impact player at #19 more than we need an extra pick.

Nothing to 'outsmart' here. Hickey and his tenure will be a one year proposition if he doesn't fix the oline.

If the value isn't there for a Tackle, move down get that extra pick and take the Guard out of UCLA who would be better value. Use one of the 2nds on a TE or LB, the other on another lineman.

This team will go no where again, if the line isn't fixed. I'm sure Hickey and Philbin understand the position they are in. Sadly, some like the above poster do not.

If the Saints offered their 27th and 58th for our 19th, would you guys take it? I think I would...we would have the #27, #50 and #58.

I would. With the goal of getting McCarron at either 50 or 58.

Impact RT?

I would consider Lewan or Martin an impact player because we really need a guy who can start at RT, but backup LT. Out of the six years Albert has been in the league, he has had only one season where he has played every game and that was in 2011. I think for me, we need a guy who can start right away, make a difference, and eventually climb the ranks to the pro-bowl. When Pouncey was drafted, I remember he wasn't a sexy pick, but now look . A lot of us, including me, are damn happy to have him.

I hear ya dude, and agree. I am just a little worried that Hickey is gonna try to impress too much, get too cute, and screw things up. I guess I have Ireland and his last few drafts to thank for that. :-)

Some of us were elated he was the pick. If one of the tackles fall to 19, I would take either in a heart beat. Asking them to come in and play RT with the ability so kick them inside if needed, is a plus. Either way, I again would spend 2 of my top 3 picks on the line. No way I get out of this draft without at least 2 starters for the line.

Yes, Ireland was definitely stricken with a serious case of the fancy play syndrome. That third round trade down then trade back up last year was bizarre.

Yeah I had no idea was Ireland was thinking or doing last year. The trade up and then the trade down seemed to be a bad case of panic and confusion on his part, and the players we got either were injured or not ready to play. I am so happy Ireland is gone.

That's exactly what I am talking about. I heard somewhere that a good GM needs to understand where the runs are going to happen, and I guess Ireland didn't have good handle on that. On-the-other hand, from what Hickey has said, I think he has a better understanding, so it will be interesting to see how we do.

On a side note: I am sick of waiting on the draft already! I wish it was today instead of next Thursday!!

I cropped this to the points I wanted to emphasize Dubz, hope you don't mind.

This is the crux of our draft. We have 2 starting caliber OL, a project who can't pass protect (Shelley) and a bunch of journeymen.

We NEED to come out of this draft with 2 OL starters. Anything less and we are setting ourselves up to fail.

As Dubz pointed out above, failure means we clean house of coach, staff and GM. Ignore the smokescreens, Hickey knows he must solve the OL, and he knows which linemen can do it.

Let's focus on filling out many holes. It's not like we are 1 playmaker away from being contenders.
