GM Candidates Still Confused About Power Structure

why would a gm report to dawn aponte? I thought she just handles contracts?

Or maybe there are real issues here that need to be cleaned up.

The real issue is Jason Cole wrote his article 1 week late and didnt check to see if the situation changed. Cole also didnt say if those statements came before or after an interview. Cole also didn't reference Stephen Ross' statement, so he may not even be aware of it.

This situation was not created by the media, it was created by Ross. When he got rid of Sparano he kept Ireland. Big Mistake. Now he gets rid of Ireland but keep Philbin. Another mistake. Any GM that knows what he's doing wants to bring his ow HC. Philbin might turn out to be a good HC at some point but Ross made a mistake and created a mess by keeping him. The media doesn't have anything personal on the dolphins. They just keep on making mistakes and decisions that make no sense. You can't have 3 people in charge and then expect everyone to be on the same page. I'm glad he got rid of Ireland but he needed to clean house. It's like he's always trying to fix things half way. Say what you want but at least 4 or 5 guys have turn down interviews for the job. Why is that? They don't want to walk into a mess. If Ross wants the best then he needs to let that person make the decisions. Instead he wants a GM that can't make any final decisions. How is that te media's fault? And for those who want Philbin as HC, what is it what he's done that is so amazing to make you want him as the HC?

Ozzy rules!!

We don't know what happens behind closed doors but don't see how Aponte has somehow set herself apart from the rest of the league as being a tougher negotiator and even if she is haven't seen anything special in impact of contracts. I would like to see examples of what hard driven contracts she had that were so good.

Isnt it that clause- the name escapes me- wherein we dont have to pay a player the remaining contract if they are cut? As far as I know, thats when her name began to hit the media. She remained tough on the issue when teams picking before and directly behind us caved.

We had plenty of cap room last year as we do this year. Why would you disregard that as a feather in her cap?

Lets be honest, the story of tattle-telling is what has blown this nonsense into the upper stratosphere. If we wouldve never seen or heard that tree fall in the woods, her name wouldve remained synonymous only with the aforementioned clause.

I don't understand what is so confusing.

Ross said: "The new General Manager will have autonomous responsibility for the 53 man roster and selecting players during the draft and will report to me."

The article claims one candidate said: “I honestly don’t know if you answer to the owner or to (Vice President of Football Administration) Dawn Aponte. It’s all really unclear.”

If a candidate walked out of a face to face meeting after being told that, and was still unclear, I am not sure how worthy of a candidate he is.

This is exactly what I was thinking.

Such B.S. being reported. Obviously slow news day.

Sounds like an article designed to stir people up and cause trouble.
Dawn Aponte is a top negotiator and she has responsibility to negotiate with the respective agents. She is smart and she is tough and every agent probably wants her out because she is a much tougher negotiator than the men. Some might think that this sounds crazy that a woman could be tougher than a man. But I believe it.
The GM appointed will select the players he wants and tell Dawn the broad parameters, but then she does the deal.

This organization has lost its benefit for the doubt a long time ago... It is times to start believing a lot of the negative press out there because Ross has yet to allay those concerns with a single move he has made during his tenure. Every move Ross has tried to make has been ill-conceived and a failure. Why do you believe suddenly that has changed?

I knew by making the comment that Dawn could be a tougher negotiator than a man, that I would set some guys off. She has degrees in accounting and law and a masters degree in finance, she is a CPA, a juris doctorate and is also a member of the NY Bar. I have worked in big successful corporations and Dawn Aponte has the best credentials that I can recall seeing. Stephen Ross, apart from being among the biggest real estate developers in the US, is also an attorney himself. It is highly probable that he wants a top attorney/accountant to be an integral player in his $1.1 Billion investment in the Miami Dolphins. While everyone on here naturally gravitate to the player evaluation part of the GM responsibilities, because we need to see further improvement to take our team to the top. But don't underestimate Stephen Ross' desire to have people at the top of the business making intelligent business decisions. We need both. That is why this is a very important appointment and shouldn't be rushed.
Take a look at what Tannenbaum did in NY Jets. He overspent on many of his players, committing to guaranteed payments and years to players like Sanchez and others. They got into trouble because Tannenbaum said yes to everyone and then his successor had to come in and pull the reins in. A successful NFL front office needs a tough negotiator in a senior role to ensure that the team doesn't get locked into crazy commitments. Being skilled in player evaluation doesn't necessarily make a GM great at the negotiating.
Stephen Ross knows what he's doing and I'm sure that he is confident that Dawn Aponte is part of the best fit.

What would Mangini do?

Mangini would be a great selection. One, Ross likes and would trust him. Two, Mangini would be allowed to give direction and a vision to the entire team. That is leadership.

However, Ross is dithering and making this GM job more difficult by the day. He had his interviews. He has had time to do a few more, but to our knowledge has not. Therefore, out of the men you talked to...pick one. Trust your instincts and allow this team to start improving.

Ahh...more media people getting together and conspiring. If I have a learning disability you are clinically paranoid.

I am starting to think that spiketex works for Ross...

I can't understand how someone can continue to praise a man so effusively when that man hasn't yet performed a single competent action in 5 years of owning the team...

Can someone please answer me this question: how has Ross earned the benefit of the doubt on this issue?

I am genuinely interested to hear the responses. Is it just because he is a billionaire?

If our owner would have a track record of success, I would defend him to the cows came home. However, he has done nothing to demonstrate he understands what he is doing...yet people back him like he is Jerry Buss.
