Good News-Bad News (Dion Jordan vs. Jon Martin)

Martin was the team's #4 choice at LT. We tried to keep Long, trade for Albert, and sign McKinnie but, did not offer enough to close any of those deals. I do appreciate his hard work in gaining 15 pounds of muscle to make a physical night and day difference but, that may not translate int being a legit LT.

If he does not work out, I could see the team adding a vet from cuts or via trade, and then moving him back to RT next year to replace Clabo's expiring contract. We shall see.

You guys are a bunch of girls.

What if Martin is actually great, and the team wants everyone to think he sucks?

This is what handcuffs Sherman and turns running backs / tightends into O-linemen to stay in and block rather than letting them be offensive weapons to score more points.

Despite this well written up post, I'm still not convinced he's as bad as you're making him out to be, CK. You're making him sound like the worst LT in the league...

For me, despite these negative signs, I can't believe that Philbin and Co. would be OK with someone as bad as you make Martin sound, taking the field at such an important position. With no backup plan at all? In a year that is so important to so many people in that front office.

I'm calling overreaction by the Martin detractors. Martin will make an improvement this year.

Football games can be won by one play and or one player.Games can be lost by one play or by one player.Tannehill got creamed a few times last season from his blindside a few times when long was in there but a few were from Martin getting beat.

One serious shot to Tanny's blindside and we lose the game due to a fumble, and we could even lose Tanny. Thus the reason why the LT is so important.

Can make the difference in being 8-8, 9-7 or 10-6

Martin has to be great, average and were on the outside of the playoffs looking in.

Its really going to lull the opponent into a false sense of security after we let Tannehill get injured. Then, when their guard is down, we'll unleash The Martin.

He was. Last year. Either the worst or second worst. And that's just statistics, not really an opinion.

Coaches make mistakes. They were OK with Legedu Naanee being a starter until it was obvious he was one of the worst starters in the NFL.

I have to concur with CK's pessimism about J-Mart. Based on his nfl and college film, I'd have to say I don't see the problem being just strength. I think he will have a problem with the more agile and speedy DEs. As an example, check out the following video. Aldon Smith made him his b*tch @ :43 and 1:07. I think he will eventually end up a guard in this league.

I think just as we don't know how good jordan will be? Its a tad early to write off J. Martin after a few practices and a scrimmage. They asked this kid to learn right tackle last year, now they are asking him to move to left tackle...my expectations were growing pains with steady improvement as the year progresses.

I'm not even necessarily saying Martin will never be a good left tackle. I'm just saying the "night and day" improvement does not happen nearly as often as people think, and at left tackle last year he was really, really bad. Allowing a pressured play on 11.4% of pass snaps is really bad. Jake Long allowed pressures at HALF that rate and all anyone could talk about was how bad he was in 2012.

can someone explain to me our new ZBS? and also why Martin was promised to excel in the new blocking system? all off season we were told that martin was a better fit than long, and not to worry about one of the most important skill positions on offense. Was this just blowing smoke?

Nobody's really biting on the good news which is interesting. Like I said I already knew about the negatives with Martin being moved to left tackle and so it's not a significant development for me. But the Dion Jordan thing might be.

ZBS doesn't really have much to do with pass protection. Most teams zone block on pass plays.

And, while it is early, whose to say this kid won't be a phenom pass rusher who will give most of the left tackles fits?

Yeah, he was bad last year. Even more of a reason for me to believe that they wouldn't be sticking with Martin at LT if he wasn't making improvements.

Yeah for sure, can't argue that. That dude was in a Dolphins uniform for way to long.

Well, I hope they aren't making the same mistake with Martin. I remain optimistic...

Silver lining if Martin turns out to be a terrible LT this year is that we have a QB that completes a high % under pressure. :)
