Gotta love the "draft experts" on this forum

James is a good player and he'll start day 1 but it was a tremendous reach in an event that's all about value. Could have traded back and got the same player along with more picks. That's how you get ahead. That's how the New England Patriots have won Super Bowls and dominated the draft. They understand value and the Dolphins don't. And that's why year after year we're spinning our tires in the mud.

PURE specualtion. Nobody was in that war room, End of story.

Also didn't realize from everyone else that playmakers are not available in rounds 2-7.

I do think we blew an opportuniy...and I absolutely love Cooks and hate to think about what he will do with Brees and Jimmy Grahm.

I like James...wanted him in round two even if we had to trade up for him.

I just think we forced a pick we didn't have to make.

Again...no other O-lineman got drafted 20-32.
Maybe it's because Miami took the last 1st round worthy lineman

I agree with most of what you said we definitely could have traded back, but using the Patriots is not the best example. Yes they have had a history of picking up many picks but how many of those picks have really become that great? Vince Wilfork?.. No receivers and always a mediocre defense at best. Take Tom Brady out of New England and the AFC East the past 10 years would be a lot different.

Logan Mankins
Devin McCourty
Jerod Mayo

Aaron Hernandez pre-jail

I'm a Patriots hater, but let's not be stupid, you gotta respect what they've done.

There's some info coming out now that Arizona (who picked right after us) was going to take James if he fell to them.....Therefore Hickey & FO had to stand pat and use the pick on him and could not trade back.....otherwise they'd have lost out on taking a top rated RT and been left with their di*ks in their hands.

BECAUSE (ready for it).... we drafted the last quality first round offensive lineman.

The Patriots have traded both up and down for great players, thats not the point, the point is they always get great value on the trade. Hickey was definitely open to making a trade but he wasn't so desperate to take poor value.

Value
Value
****ing value matters!!

Well, I guess we're lucky that they didn't hear that soeone aehad of them was going to take James, and trade up (eg, the Vernon Carey debacle).

How do you figure James is a first round quality lineman?

Remember all the banter about Jordan not starting his rookie year, blah blah blah. Well, James is a day one starter with NFL ready pass protection skills.

it's possible they could have took him but they got solid play from young tackles last year...is zona even a zone scheme oline???

This all speculation. It is also possible that James being available could have prompted a different team to move ahead of 27 and take James. Since he was gone at 19 there is no way to know what would have happened if the Dolphins traded down. That is a simple fact.

So in your opinion, it was just "dumb luck" that 32 picks matched the 31 team's needs and also happened to "match up" with value. Not that any team was looking for need, but it just happen to happen. People that believe that NFL teams are always or should always pick BPA are semi clueless IMO. In later rounds or when your team is so stack you have no needs then maybe. Maybe 90% of draft picks are based on need. Do we need another QB or WR? Or someone to keep Tannehill upright.

Correct. And when a team does occasionally ignore need (Dallas taking Martin), it is called a "luxury pick". Go figure.

That says nothing about the James pick. It only tells me that 12 teams had other people rated higher or had bigger needs. If anything it validates the idea that there is a drop off between James and the guys that are left.

That doesn't mean he's first round quality.

That's 5 of how many whiffs in the last several years. Besides, I think you can take Gronk and Hernandez off of that list. Everyone knew these guys were superbly talented, it was Gronk's injury history that made him slide and Hernandez's character (which was obviously dead on) which made him slide. The Pats do not draft well. They get a ton of picks, throw **** at the wall and see what sticks, and it rarely does for them. They have Tom Brady, a good line and a hall of fame coach, that's where it begins and ends for that team.

The better question is why are peoples feelings hurt about how others feel. Why are people taking it personal that someone likes or dislikes a soon to be millionaire. Furthermore I agree with the line of thinking that suggests that the OL we could have drafted while trading back would have similar impact as James at 19. Sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings.
