He had a short term contract and when it expired he simply wasn't offered a permanent deal. To me, it sounded like it was never intended to be a permanent position, but rather a chance to get a large dose of other scouts' perspectives since he had that from his time in Miami. Next year he will not have that information, so no real reason to make it permanent.
To Ireland's credit, the Seahawks have a good scouting department and that they wanted his input is a complement. I'm sure he could have done the same for several other teams, such as the Patriots, but he chose to work for a team out of our division, conference, and schedule this year.
