Grimes impressed with Jarvis Landry

Philbin didn't like a D.Bess type receivers and so far, all indication are Landry is exactly same type

you don't. this is another one of those things I see from fans that have absolutely NO merit!!

show us the link where PHILBIN says he didn't like the d. bess type of wr? who do you think signed off on him playing, being on the field and finding his spot?

so.....,what do we know about devon bess now. we found out he had a nagging injury that finally did him in at Cleveland AND the guy was a major head case with all kinds of personal and commitment issues. you think maybe that was known by the staff and maybe that's why they let him go and NOT because philbin didn't like the d. bess kind of wr? [whatever that means].

d. bess was ok. he wasn't a perennial probowler or all pro. he was a slot guy PERIOD!! everything I see landry does MUCH better. he isnt JUST a slot guy, he can play ANY wr spot. IF... bess wasn't an injured head case who wasn't sure he even wanted to play the game anymore didn't have all that, he would most likely still be here. this decision had NOTHING...ABSOUTELY NOTHING with "bess not being the kind of wr philbin doesn't like". [again, whatever that means].

the proof shows other wise. this has NO merit and no proof. bess's mental issues didn't just pop up when he stepped off the plane in Cleveland. the coaches KNEW and they made the right move.
 
Trying to get as excited as everyone else about this pick, but I just can't get there. We had many holes that needed to be filled and instead we picked a guy that really doesn't make our team any better. Even if he could beat out Gibson for the starting slot, (which he won't) Gibson was probably our best WR last year before getting hurt, so if you take Gibson off the field to add Landry it is at best a wash. Add to that we also have Mathews as a very good slot and the pick puts us in a position where we have 3 solid players, all with similiar skill sets playing the same position. None of the three have great speed, although Mathews is pretty fast, none have great height, although Gibson has proven to be good at catching around the GL.

Gibson proved to be a very good blocker, very aware, and great on 3rd downs. Mathews has the best run after catch. I think Landry has a real chance to be a solid 10 year player who is never a top 10 WR, but very reliable. I just don't see how our WR core got any more dynamic with Landry. As someone else mentioned I see a lot of Davone Bess in him. Better hands maybe but almost the exact speed. Both had a 4.55 as their best and both of their worst times were 4.79 and 4.80. I don't see any run after the catch translating to this level.

Some times you don't have anyone to trade down with and your player is gone so you just take the highest rated player on your board. If that is what happened in the draft then fine, we have even more depth down the road, but if this was our plan all along I have to question Hickey's opinion of our LBs. We have one starter at LB and two backups that are scheduled to start, while we have 2 starting caliber slot WRs and he decides to draft a 3rd and ignore the LBs until much later in the draft. Didn't like it then and hate it even more now.
 
In the clip with Grimes he is asked what additions has impressed him, and he mentions Landry, but also mentions a FA that he doesn't name as having impressed him. I wonder who he was talking about. Could it be Stephen Williams?? We could use a taller redzone threat to step up, whether it be Binns or Stephen Williams we need some height down around the GL. That would force us to keep either 6 WRs or trade one of them, but we have a roster full of guys who can play between the 20s, we need someone to catch fades.
 
One big difference not mentioned thus far is that Bess shied away from contact. He routinely caught a pass for 8 yards when 10 was needed for a 1st down.

Landry likes contact and will be superior on rub/pick plays as two receivers cross because Landry can absorb the pick forcing the DB covering the other receiver to adjust and go around Landry.

Lazor uses that play to get guys open. It was a nice way to get the ball to Desean Jackson last year and it will be used to get the ball to Wallace and Gibson this year. So when you see hose guys wide open on a crossing pattern and you wonder where their DB is ... check to see if they are pissed off at Landry.

Also, Bess didn't block downfield, but Landry does. So, when we get chunk yardage we have a real shot to make the chunk substantially bigger.

Bess had already flipped out bigtime once on weed before we traded him. He had a serious ganja problem and we pulled off a heist job offloading him to the Browns. Cue meltdown.

Possibly Rantavious Wooten, who's an interesting kid from Georgia. Small but tough and gets pretty consistent separation.

He had a bad hamstring. When he ran at his pro day, it was a 4.5. Still not that quick and his other drills were average, but the kid is a huge competitor and seems to need the pads on and the game flowing for his adrenaline to take over. He has game speed. It's not killer speed, But he is effective and physical. How effective remains to be seen.

For once we'll have a blocking receiver, which will be a change.
 
I'll be happy to have a reciever that catches with his hands and not his body.

The biggest two difference between them is that he is a willing and quality blocker, seems to be a almost love contact, as it gives him a chance to smash someone, and he goes up for the pass and rarely loses...simply put, he is a very physical receiver.

People after watching this guy for a while will get to the point where they will feel extremely surprised when he goes down at 1st contact. He is going to be fun catching the ball, but when there is a run, and he is in front blocking, he will also give many fans plenty of thrills.
 
meh didnt jerry rice run a 4.6? when the pads come on 40 times don't really mean much. there's 40 time in shorts and then theres football speed with full pads on game day.

He is not even similar...this is one of those guys you just know is a football player and will have a very successful career......I know many will say lets see him play a game first, but I will go out on a limb right now and say just like at LSU...he will be greater in this league than his teammate beckham. I kind of see last years LSU team like the mid-80's Dolphins.....Beckham was Duper and Landry was Clayton....Clayton was the greater Dolphin despite his 4.6 speed.

Again...the greatest receiver in history was a 4.6 (Jerry Rice)...track 40 times is one of the worst errors in evaluation amatuer football evaluators make.
