Have the Miami Dolphins Improved Under Joe Philbin?

We were one win and a playoff birth would have eliminated this thread. And Hickey hasn't even completed an entire offseason and we're already calling for his head? :rolleyes2:

But to answer the Q, I think we could be better. You can't say the OL is a total loss until Pouncy gets back. The only thing for sure about the OL is that the RG position is the position of weakness. Im satisfied with the production of the rest of the line for the most part. Next, the LBs need to improve.

But even with those deficiencies, I still think we're a playoff team, but one or two injuries at the wrong time could derail that.....and then you know,'FIRE EVERYBODY!!!'

I am just glad that fans do not have a say as to what happens. I don't think coaches or the team care one way or another what a fan thinks. If you think otherwise, you're delusional.

No.

The only noticeable difference is Tannehill > Henne.

Philbin got rid of Brandon Marshall, Jake Long, Karlos Dansby, Kevin Burnett, Vontae Davis, Reggie Bush, Anthony Fasano, who were all very good players. I think he is a slightly better football coach than Sparano.

I guess we'll have to see by the end of the season. I lost a LOT of faith in Philbin the last 2 weeks of the season (last season). a playoff berth was there for the taking and we blew it...TWICE!!

Now I think that getting rid of Sherman and adding Lazor is gonna do wonders for Thill (or least I hope so). We shall see

Playoffs or bust baby!

Are you saying we're worse "this year" in those areas? Or for 2013?

Obviously this year will have to play out.

The question is; Have the Miami Dolphins improved under Joe Philbin?

My answer is;
As of the end of last season I don't think we've improved. We got a bit better in some positions and a bit worse in others.
Our offense still sucked and our defense declined.
We'll see if that changes this year. This is a question best answered at the end of this season IMO.

My dog would be an improvement over Tony Sparano. With that being said, I would say that Philbin is an improvement, but that is not a major accomplishment considering who the previous coach was.

Some progress is better than no progress at all. Considering what a train wreck last season was (From Halloween on), the phins were only 1 game from the playoffs.

Look at the Cowboys as an example of festering in mediocrity. How many times have they finished 8-8 and choked away the season in week 17? Yet, their genius head cheerleader/owner/GM thinks all is well as long as they are "good tv".

Ross, Philbin, & co aren't perfect but would you rather root for the Cowboys, Browns, Redskins, Raiders, Jaguars, yada yada yada?

I back the teams of the city that I'm from. Doesn't matter how much **** hits the fan, or how good other teams are doing in comparison.

It's definitely a roller coaster of emotions, but I guess it wouldn't be any fun if it wasn't.

Offensive line, Linebacker, Defensive ranking points per game, Defensive ranking yards rushing.

Just to name a few.

Ok I guess I misunderstood. I thought you were saying we are worse going in to this season than were last.

Talent-wise and depth-wise, yes we have greatly improved. Casual fans look to the starters to measure a team's improvement. But Philbin's teaching methodology and belief in the draft has helped us turn over the bottom and middle parts of our roster in many areas with quality and promising young talent. We have NOT been able to say that on this magnitude since Jimmy was here.

And frankly, if Hickey has another draft like this one, we will have washed all of the Ireland stain off of this team. Hickey's finds "acorns" in bushels. Ireland was picking them up one at a time.

I also believe, from top to bottom, this organization has better staff than before Philbin.

Philbin's weaknesses thus far have been closing out the season, playing to the level of his competition and delivering signature wins. Philbin addressed Bullygate in his own way with player moves and coaching moves, rebuilt the OL from scratch and parted with his longtime friend at OC. All in all, he has made a lot of big decisions in the past offseason. Yes, he was responsible for allowing those problems to develop. But he DID address them and implement a solution. So, that's a wash at this point.

Philbin had 4 ugly losses last year against inferior opponents (Bucs, Bills, Bills and Jets). Flip that script and we are 12-4. Where we a legit 12-4 team? No. But it was the schedule we were handed and was ours to win or lose. Had we been upwardly progressing, we would have been 12-4, albeit an inflated 12-4.

Philbin has to put the Jets and Bills in his rearview mirror. He cannot simply stand on the offseason changes alone. Those were problems he had to fix. But in the grander scheme of things, he also has to make improvement. He must finish at least 2nd in the division, make the playoffs and prove Tannehill is a Franchise QB. Other deficiencies will be addressed in next draft (mainly RB, LB and a last piece to the OL). But this year, he has to show Tannehill can win with team deficiencies and put this team on his back. We need to WIN because of Tannehill.

Finally, this year, we need a signature win. Sweeping the Jets and Bills are not signatures. They are on the list of things to do, but still not a signature. For me, I see 2 real chances at signature wins this year: 10/12/14 vs Packers and 12/14/14 @ Patriots. We need 1 of those 2 games. And we need to at least split with NE this year. I would like to see a competitive game @ Broncos on 11/23/14. I do not want to see another Saints game. We should not be outclassed again. Possible? Yes. But not if we are making strides.

I believe in Philbin. I don't always agree with his decisions. But he believes in those he hires and expects them to do their jobs. Honestly, a stronger organization is made from believing in each person to do their job. And that's what we need: A strong organization.

Dallas Thomas is a great example. Philbin will keep cultivating Thomas' talent. Even if he only remains as a backup, Philbin will get the most of him and each draft pick.

I think we have the right coach for us. We may not like his deficiencies, but he wants to be here. He has a long term vision and believes in those around him. He works within and it takes time. But it does provide for long term stability.

Stay the course.

The offensive line is a million times better. Philbin will definitely have us superbowl bound.

QB, TE, WR, D-line, and DB play has improved under Philbin. O-line, RB, and LB play has fallen off. I think overall we have improved as a football team, but the progress isn't as high as you would want with the talent we have.

we had a signature win when we beat the patriots in week 15 last year...but all that good feeling fell apart with the final 2 week finish...
