Have the Miami Dolphins Improved Under Joe Philbin?

When was the last time we were so talented at receiver? DE? I'm predicting both Finnigan and Davis will be pretty good, if Jamar Taylor is good also the CB group could be one of the best in franchise history.

Just two years ago we had the worst WR and CB corps in team history and Jared Odrick was one of our top DEs...

I see improvement all over the offense. The defense so far doesn't seem as good but if they continue to give up yards and keep the opponent out of the end zone it can work

But ................................. aren't you the one saying Ireland made all the personnel decisions? Aren't you the one telling me Philbin was helpless and couldn't talk Ireland into brining in the o-line talent Philbin wanted? So which is it?

Mixed feelings here. A HC needs "his guys" on the roster to judge. Last year, Philbin wanted Albert and Ireland did not. Then everyone agreed on Jordan, which is not looking good. One problem I had was forcing the ZBS on an OL which only had Pouncey who fit it. This year we have fits, and will see how it works. He also has a lot more help this year in Lazor and Benton, along with good working relationship with Hickey.

This is the year to judge, in spite of all the changes.

The fact of the matter is we went from having the worst group of WRs and CBs in franchise history when Philbin got here to maybe the best group of WRs and CBs in franchise history two years later. I'm not saying who is or isn't responsible for that, I'm just saying that is what happened. And if Philbin was allowed to bring in the o-line talent he wanted (Brandon Albert) we probably wouldn't have had the worst o-line in franchise history last season.

The team had the worst WRs and CBs in franchise history Philbins first year. And the worst o-line in franchise history his second year. Let that sink in for a second. Its pretty bad to have one unit be the worst in franchise history under your watch, but three units, IN TWO YEARS!?! You can choose to put the blame for that on whoever you want as it'll probably be impossible to prove who was responsible for what but my guess is Jeff Ireland was the "mastermind" building the team his way or the highway.

I back the teams of the city that I'm from. Doesn't matter how much **** hits the fan, or how good other teams are doing in comparison.

Props for sticking through good & bad. You missed my point that there are other teams who are managed worse or are perpetually mediocre.

That said, if I were a donkeys, rockies, & jazz fan... life would be bleak & unbearable.

Tough for Philbin to have improved the team when the OL was **** last year. I probably can't explain how they finished better in 2013 than in 2012 even with the ****ty OL. In 2012 they had a bunch of bums starting at WR outside of Hartline.

Of course in 2014 the OL could be a problem as well. The LB core might also be worse than it has in years past. I guess there's always going to be a part of the team that could be better but how much it affects the team's overall record will need to be seen.

My quick answer is NO! With the talent we have this year he better do better than 8-8. No more excuses. You knew the Oline was going to be a problem and they, it seems, have not fixed it. That is on Philbin and Hickey's shoulders. No improvement and it's, Do not let the door hit you on the way out. Once again we start over because we have idiots in the ownership box!

My quick answer is yes. They were a better team in 2013, then they were in 2012, which was a better team then 2011. They were better, talent, execution, and record wise.

A big example of how good Philbin has been, last year with the bullygame scandal, most teams would have fully fallen apart, Miami continued to play hard, and smart football.

we had a signature win when we beat the patriots in week 15 last year...but all that good feeling fell apart with the final 2 week finish...

And that's the reason I was calling again for a Signature Win. To me, a signature win marks a turning point in which you build upon and do not regress from. We have yet to do that in the Philbin era. For every step we have taken forward, we have fallen backward.

At this point, Philbin's impact on our on-the-field results is zero sum.

But I fully believe this is the year we take a playoff step forward and return to winning football for the foreseeable future. We simply have too many pieces in place to not produce wins.

Lol ... so ev erything good Philbin was responsible for and everything bad Ireland was responsible for. You can't have it both ways. And as for the o-line? You said it, HIS second year was worse than HIS first.

That is the reality of the situation. THAT is not an improvement.

WR's and DB's ... selling that Philbin was responsible for turning that around and yet Ireland wouldn't listen to him on O-line is comical and foolish. I doubt seriously that Ireland told Philbin he could pick his players at WR and DB but not at LB and O-line. That's ridiculous and nothing more that a desperate attempt to defend the indefensible.

The fact is this team has improved in some ways and declined in others and Philbin deserves accolades and blame as part of the brain trust that has been running this team the last three years.

Well, we have ZERO information with regards who wanted what at WR and CB and we have SOME information with regards to the o-line, so no, its not foolish to exonerate Philbin from the some of the o-line issues.

The only things we know are that Philbin wanted Albert, and coaches wanted Jordan. Past that, it's anyone's guess. I might add that it did "appear" that Philbin wanted to keep Sherman but, not sure.

Not really. Certain positions are stronger than others, a lot of shoulda, coulda, woulda's, and if's...but the same thing could be said even when Sparano was here. In the end we have remained, up until now, pretty stagnant.
