Hayden Fox's Preseason Week Three Assessment

Year after year, people continue to make excuses for this sorry franchise.
And they only need to go back a few seasons to see how comparable the offense is to the Henne days. Rack up yards, drives end on miscues or FGs.

Considering getting smoked in the turnover battle....I am fairly satisfied with the game....I felt like we could have one by a larger margin if not for the mistakes.

I 'm not one to put much stock in the 2nd string quarterback going against 2nd string defense when comparing the performances of your QB's.

I was also pissed at them switching to the Dallas broadcast team....I have never seen them do that before.

I hate listening to the other teams broadcast.....they should offer a choice since they are charging for it.

It seems like you used to be able to choose.

The switch and the 4th TO as well. Never heard anything like that before.

Another point that has been overlooked is that the Dallas offensive starters did nothing until Wheeler and Ellerbee were on the field together. When Trusnik and Tripp anchored the middle the defense played really well.

Hayden - another great writeup. Your analytical skills are already in great form.
- The other big plus that was the deliberate effort to get Mike Wallace in the game with some solid catches for decent yardage. I'm still convinced that Wallace is a stud and Lazor will know how to use him better than Sherman.
- Dallas Thomas may have been playing for his Dolphin career. I think that Philbin/Lazor/Benton may have given him the reps to assess if he can be possibly salvaged or to cut him. For all of the Philbin comments about improving at Training Camp, Dallas just doesn't seem strong enough to hold up. I am looking for something but see nothing that warrants salvaging. Huge investment of coaching time and effort appears to have been wasted.
- With some teams so depleted at WR and we have at least 6, maybe Hickey tries to trade one of our guys for an O-lineman, where we remain thin. Thin is not a good look at O-line.

I agree and I think we can stick him on the practice squad with ease, if he's even worth one of those 10 slots.

Darkwa is a definite practice squad candidate, don't see anybody trying to steal him. From the sounds of it teams like Dallas may have to cut a guy/guys better than our number two back Lamar Miller let alone our 4th or 5th best back.

RT took the blame for the missed connection with Wallace after the game.

A QB will always take the blame, it' bad etiquette to blame your receivers. But even if it was a bad throw, Wallace was running clueless with the ball in the air and it's the second time in two games now. That better be the last time I see that this year.

Matt Moore's pick was bad too, but there's a reason why you don't call screen passes deep in your own territory. I though Joe Gibbs established that definitively.

Well, I for one would have hated it even more if they had called that play from Dallas' 20. Then it would have been an 80-yard TD return instead of a short one.

Btw, shouldn't the refs have measured for a first down before applying the 10-yard block on the back penalty? The one immediately before the tackles forgot to block

Make no mistake, this would not be acceptable in the regular season. But the fact is if there's one thing you're gonna have more of in preseason, it's dumb mistakes. What you really don't want to see in preseason is your guys outmanned or outplayed. But mistakes, as ugly and frustrating as they are, come with the territory.

So in other words:

Send Mike Gillislie to the PUP list and flat out cut Daniel Thomas..I would make Gator the third tightend at least. With maybe The guy just drafted going to the practice squad and Brackett. Cut the rest.

For the 1st time since Tannehill was drafted, I've become skeptical of him as a franchise QB. I have my doubts about how consistent he can become. While I realize he is learning a new offense, he just continues to falter in his ability to lead the team to TD's. I also see a disturbing trend with his overall field vision, where at times; he seems to determine pre-snap he's going to a specific player and seems to miss other opportunities on the field. To me it shows his inability to adjust his progression, after the snap and go in another direction on the field. This is disturbing because he continues to turn the ball over in those situations. As for the entire team as a whole, I'm not sure of what to make of the O-Line yet, although I see TREMENDOUS POTENTIAL!!! Although it seems like they achieved a successful running game against a bad Dallas defense, It doesn't look like the unit will be strong in the run game overall. The defense looks like it could be top 10. I love the Benton and Lazor hires, but it may take another year for this team to truly come together, a year I'm not sure Philbin has. Hickey has shown it may not always be the 1st choice that is the best; but the best choice can come from the bottom of the barrel or totem pole. He's done an admirable job in just a few months on the job. I hope he can continue what he's started, because this draft class and UDFA class seems like a tremendous haul?

I agree with everything here except Wallace being at fault for the missed connection. Wallace was 5 yards behind his man WIDE OPEN and Tannehill overthrows the SAFETY! Wallace couldn't track the ball because it was too damn far away from him to see it. I have issues with Wallace like the fact he catches almost everything everything with his body and not his hands. But that play was not on him

Great write up as always by Hayden. I'll throw in a few observations I had:

* It was great to see the offensive linemen actually moving forward. Then I look up and Dallas Thomas is in the lineup on 2nd and 2. Immediately he's shoved backward. Then after sitting out a few plays during the transition to the second quarter, Thomas is out there again and gets roasted on a spin move. Tannehill threw it into the ground, barely avoiding a sack.

The stubbornness with Dallas Thomas should be over. Decide if you are going to keep him deep on the roster, on the practice squad, or not at all. We've seen enough with the starters.

* Billy Turner looked better than I've seen at any point since I started watching him in the disastrous Senior Bowl practices. Last week in a brief sample he seemed more natural on the left side and that was confirmed tonight. Against players of his own caliber he bounces quickly from initial assignment to second level. Starting to bend and understand leverage somewhat better. Granted, we help him out on virtually every play, certainly more than we've helped Thomas. Not ready to start and I'm not certain of his natural strength but could be a keeper.

* The best situational pass rush lineup is Wake at left end, with Shelby at left tackle, Odrick at right tackle and Vernon at right end. Shelby is much more impressive than a year ago, when Armstead of New Orleans made him look foolish in preseason. Shelby can burst and create a seam of his own. Earl Mitchell doesn't do that. Watch Mitchell on every play and you can see how he earned the reputation of a frustrating player among Texans fans, a guy who would dominate preseason and then flatten out in the regular season. Mitchell gives a consistent effort but doesn't really produce anything. Quick off the mark but once he's stuck he lacks strength or sufficient moves to create havoc. It's going to take a very poor offensive lineman across from him to be oft defeated. That type of weak lineman is prevalent deep in to the second half of preseason games. But now that Mitchell has moved into a spotlight role he's simply not special enough. I can see how coaches appreciate his effort level but Mitchell doesn't have a dominant trait like Soliai's raw strength and therefore the necessity of a double team. I can certainly understand why Odrick would be frustrated at Mitchell's contract.

* Tannehill once again avoided a rightful interception. Eventually the odds have to catch up with him. I posted the Football Outsiders link that detailed Tannehill with more dropped interceptions than any other quarterback in 2013.

* We seem to be blitzing more this season, specifically sending Wheeler up the middle. He's got a nice kamikaze style for that role. Also there's seemingly less chance to make a stupid error

* Gator Hoskins with some nice athletic ability and especially the athletic arrogance to finish.

* I think we're in trouble if the opponent has a true #1 receiver. IMO, Grimes is the most overrated player on the team entering 2014. He is not susceptible to falling off the map like Reshad Jones last season but I doubt his reputation among Dolphin fans will be the same a few months from now

* I've already detailed Dion Jordan and Damian Williams in other threads tonight

* Tannehill needs to study the trajectory and timing of Matt Moore's deep ball

* Fields is a better athlete than I suspected based on his sound technique while kicking soccer style

* Backup defense was considerably more boring to watch without Fede. Tripp was less effective and McCain simply doesn't have an NFL frame at this point. He really needs an offseason to get stronger and more defined. But McCain does have variety and instincts. After so many plays watching monotonous Jordan I was shocked when McCain actually dipped his shoulder on an edge rush.

* Broadcast crew was terrific tonight. IMO, Griese/Moore have had their best seasons in years. But I'm not going to let Griese slide from an anachronistic error. Actually two of them. Bob Lilly was responsible for that 29 yard sack in Super Bowl VI. Dick Stockton found the correct name. Then Griese tried to place Ed Too Tall Jones and Randy White on that 1971 Cowboys team. Not even close. Jones entered the league in 1974 and White in 1975. That was famous at the time, that a team as talented as Dallas managed to acquire high picks through astute trading and ended up with stud defensive linemen. I may not remember season specifics from the '90s or later but I'm not going to botch the 1970s.

Nailed it. By midseason, Hoskins paired with Clay should cause issues for opposing D's. I wouldn't risk putting him on the PS.

Gotta agree here also. It sucks he missed a lot of time or we wouldn't even be having this conversation. He looks like he has put on some muscle as well in the offseason. Charles Clay clone..with a knack for the end zone

Thanks for the write-up Hayden. I can't watch the pre-season games, so I rely on Finheaven to keep me in the loop. Good synopsis.
