Hayden Fox's Preseason Week Three Assessment

Always ask yourself, will this team beat the Patriots? I don't mean if so and so happens or if so and so does this or that. I mean is the team capable of beating the Pats, and a lesser extent, Jets and Bills? If you're not sure, that tells you all you need to know.

Nailed it. By midseason, Hoskins paired with Clay should cause issues for opposing D's. I wouldn't risk putting him on the PS.

I'll be so pissed if we let a potential star like Hoskins get away in order to keep a journeyman at best lineman or RB on the roster.

Assuming you're talking about Daniel Thomas? Either way, Moreno is the only RB on the roster I'd keep ahead of Hoskins in a must-cut situation. I like D. Williams well enough, but I don't think he's a better talent than Gator.

After we signed Hoskins, a couple of people told me "check this guy out, he can play."

He really struck me as being a guy with a lot in common with Charles Clay. I figured we brought him in to back up Clay, but I think you are right that he might be on the field with Clay at the same time.

Maybe you can tell me what I'm missing, but I remain completely unimpressed with Dion Sims. He wears defenders like drapes.

even if they don't get on the field at the same time, it will be nice to know Hoskins is on the sideline, in case clay gets injured again, or just gets beat up.

To this point, Simms is a poor-man's Anthony Fasano. He's nothing special, but with Lynch being a rookie and injured, he's the only big-framed TE we have available. FWIW, I was a big CJ Fiedorowicz guy. We didn't have the opportunity to draft him - taken at the top of the 3rd, but if he did last until our pick in the 3rd, I would have considered him. Much better talent than Simms.

Thanks for the write-up
Hope Gator makes the 53 man roster

The more playmakers the better. Up until last night I knew virtually nothing about Hoskins. But he certainly impressed me last night. At this point I, too, would like to see Hoskins and Damien and Damian Williams make the 53 man squad. D. Thomas and Gillislee are expendable. Darkwa Orleans to the ps. How they play next week may be the determining factor.

Always enjoy your assessments.

I've been a big fan of Gator Hoskins for reasons we got to see tonight. He needs to make the roster or we're going to lose him. Knowshon looked terrific. The vast majority of Hickey's moves have looked damn impressive. It's the deadweight from the Ireland trauma that's holding us back.

The big concerns from last night to me are gigantic concerns. Tannehill really, really didn't look good. QB will always be the most important position and I really hope there's more there than we're seeing. My other concern is Philbin's decision making. I don't understand how Dallas Thomas would get starter snaps over Shelley Smith. It doesn't make sense. Hickey knew what he was doing when he signed Smith. Why is Philbin playing these idiotic games by playing Thomas excessively? It shows a disconnect from common sense that I don't want to see in the prime decision maker.

While your hypothesis might be correct, it might be that the position coach suggested that Thomas be the starter. This makes some sense if pass protection was the priority. Clearly, Thomas has shown he is a big liability in both pass protection and run blocking.

I don't fault Philbin for trying to make Dallas Thomas work. He's a second year player who apparently showed enough practice to warrant starting consideration, and it's in our best interests if we can have a young player who will be able to start for years emerge as opposed to having to count on signing a more expensive FA or use another draft pick there. I'll fault Philbin if Smith isn't starting week one. I don't think we have to worry about that.

Once the new league year begins, Miami needs to lock up Oliver Vernon. Best Ireland transaction. Vernon or Clay. But it's apparent that both are long term starters and they must be retained. They are pro bowl caliber players with the arrow pointing up.

RT sucked tonight. 3rd game of preseason is a preview of whats to come in the season IMO. Couldn't even score and in the redzone twice. Hartline literally had 3 people in his area and RT still chose to force it to him. I seriously can not fathom how you miss Wallace like that when he beats his man and is literaly WIDE OPEN. Every throw like that DOES not have to be a "Run n get it" type floater. It frustrates me so much to sit here and watch RT think and think and think about how to throw it. Just look at his posture when he does it. Its as if he really HATES the fact he has a guy like wallace on his team. I don't think they will ever "connect" on a level people will want to see, ever. And I also hope by next year Wallace is gone. We don't need a WR like that in this system. Either way RT his every other receiver deep except for wallace. I don't know where I am going with all this but jesus. Not happy with what I saw from the offense. Sure we had a good running game against one of the worst running defenses in the NFL. Sure our pass rush was pretty good against an overrated QB who still struggles late in the season to get his team to the playoffs EVERY YEAR. I guess we did ok but I didn't see touchdowns from the first team. Hope they get their **** together.

Love your reports. I haven't seen the game yet, but very encouraged to hear that the offensive line played well especially in the run game. I know Dallas isn't New England, but that is still encouraging. Judging by preseason, I think the offensive line will be at least okay and maybe better than expected.

I also like that we have five receivers who are stating caliber IMO. Both Matthews and Landry have been impressive, along with Gibson. Hartline and Wallace haven't done a lot in the preseason, but that may be partly be design to see what others have to offer. It's not like Wallace and Hartline are fighting for their jobs.

As to running back, very, very happy to hear that Moreno played well. I'd really limit his touches in week 4. I also want to see Hoskins make this team as he seems like a potential game changer.

Well, yesterday I had no clue Moreno was Moreno. So if your asking something about certainty, I am more certain we can provided we dont do one thing....turn the ball over.

My wife doesnt even watch football and everytime she enters the room she flipantly says "you cant turn the ball over" then leaves the room.

and another thing...those NE Tackles are not that good at all. OV and Wake will destroy them. Its whether they can get to brady in 2 seconds and then in 3 when he goes back deeper.
