Hayden Fox's Preseason Week Three Assessment

I do not care about draft position. Dallas Thomas, Danelle Thomas, Egnew were terrible picks. They must go.
We must find a way to keep gator Hoskins, and Darka. Their performances were not a fluke.
I would keep Hoskins over Sims right now after what I saw on that 1 catch. He has talent.
Darka runs extremely hard and makes the most of his runs. On that TD run, he had the presence to twist his body so his knees would not touch before the ball crossed the goal line. He can ball.

There were some good things tonight for sure, but I am a little disappointed in Tannehill, especially since he was just average in the Bucs game. Getting all that yardage and then throwing a pick as bad as I have ever seen right when he cane turn that into a TD was a bid disappointing. It leaves me with the same feeling that reeling off a couple of big wins and then losing the two that can actually get your over the hump made me feel last year.

I needed to see more from Damien Williams, and I got to see it tonight. The guy is a football player who knows how to maximize each touch. I actually thought that nice run by Darkwa was him, I would have liked to have seen more of him because that explosion is genuine.

Matt Moore's pick was bad too, but there's a reason why you don't call screen passes deep in your own territory. I though Joe Gibbs established that definitively.

I love James and Albert. Pass pro looks so much better this year its scary. Dallas Thomas I think is still miscast instead of being a LG but I love what Turner does there even more. Dallas Thomas unfortunately for him he's hurt but I like Moreno as the starter, Miller, Williams, and Darwa as the 4 backs. Keep 6 receivers but Hartline better stop screwing up on 3rd down. Two weeks in a row. Just bad. Sims has some talent but he needs to hold on to the ball. Clay, Sims, and then Lynch and Hoskins?? Not sure if we keep 4. I think we are a 2 Qb team this year with talent at skill position we don't won't to risk losing. In the end I believe Turner and SMith are both going to be our starting Guards and I like that. I think our run game can come alive. I don't think that happens until the earliest week 6 and we will also have Pouncey back by then. Then we are cooking with gas in the run game. The line of Albert-Turner-Pouncey-Smith-James looks great to me.

On D, I liked what they did with Dion Jordan, He played LB on a few plays. I think that's where he should live, at SAM as our blitzing LB. Vernon and Wake look great. Our Dline is just nice. The Cowgirls were getting away with tons of push off tonight. Grimes and Finnegan were in good position all night. Delmas needs to take better angles but I think he may be the glue to this team, the chatter box. Him and Finnegan will help us create some swagger back there. Tripp when in made some nice reads and plays, he definitely can use a year in the weight room but his instincts really help him out. I see him contributing this year. Wheeler, as usually he's a LB with ADD, almost playing too fast. But I like him on the blitz and caused some good pressure tonight. Ellerbe played much better as well. Trusnik is just no at MLB.

Good point. That did not occur to me until I read your comments. WTH were they doing running that play there to begin with?

phenomenal run game. Knowshown Mareno will make us better by far.

Knowshon was good, but Miller looked good behind a line that actually made holes too. I think Shelley Smith can be thanked for that. For once it looks like we have 5 bonafide NFL starters out on the offensive line, and that includes Satele. Better run blocking (or more accurately run blocking at all) plus a commitment to the run game will have as much effect as Moreno. He's still nice to have though, and I feel really good having a guy who can make some plays in Miller along with a guy who is a legitimate starter in Moreno.

It was mentioned Wake had 2 sacks. Was he lining up at LE as usual? Just interested to know if he beat Doug Free for 2 sacks, or Tyron Smith. Free is a good starter, but Tyron Smith is a star at LT. Again thanks for the post.
He was playing against Doug Free. Wake almost always lines up against the RT.

I agree w you 100%. I'm hoping we have the balls to do something crazy like keeping these guys over guys who were drafted. The Hoskins guy looks like he could be a real handful for defenses. Sims may block ok but he doesn't appear to have the kind of upside as the other kids you listed.

Don't get too excited about the run game. Dallas's D is garbage.

By far the biggest positive of the night was Knowshon Moreno. The Dolphins now have a legitimate running back.

Everybody named Thomas on our team has to go. Everyone named Williams gets to stay. Langer is correct. Time for the team to move forward from bad draft picks of the past. Egnew was just the first to go.

Solid write up Hayden.

Thanks for the write up Hayden. After what I've heard about the practices and game performances, I would agree that Darkwa and Hoskins have to be kept somehow. I'm hoping both guys show enough on special teams to warrant active roster spots.

With that said, I think Thigpen will be cut (just doesn't use his speed effectively), Lynch will be stashed on the practice squad, and Dallas Thomas needs to be cut.

Watching highlights on NFL.com outstanding snap anticipation/reaction by Olivier Vernon on that sack.

Great write up as always by Hayden. I'll throw in a few observations I had:

* It was great to see the offensive linemen actually moving forward. Then I look up and Dallas Thomas is in the lineup on 2nd and 2. Immediately he's shoved backward. Then after sitting out a few plays during the transition to the second quarter, Thomas is out there again and gets roasted on a spin move. Tannehill threw it into the ground, barely avoiding a sack.

The stubbornness with Dallas Thomas should be over. Decide if you are going to keep him deep on the roster, on the practice squad, or not at all. We've seen enough with the starters.

* Billy Turner looked better than I've seen at any point since I started watching him in the disastrous Senior Bowl practices. Last week in a brief sample he seemed more natural on the left side and that was confirmed tonight. Against players of his own caliber he bounces quickly from initial assignment to second level. Starting to bend and understand leverage somewhat better. Granted, we help him out on virtually every play, certainly more than we've helped Thomas. Not ready to start and I'm not certain of his natural strength but could be a keeper.

* The best situational pass rush lineup is Wake at left end, with Shelby at left tackle, Odrick at right tackle and Vernon at right end. Shelby is much more impressive than a year ago, when Armstead of New Orleans made him look foolish in preseason. Shelby can burst and create a seam of his own. Earl Mitchell doesn't do that. Watch Mitchell on every play and you can see how he earned the reputation of a frustrating player among Texans fans, a guy who would dominate preseason and then flatten out in the regular season. Mitchell gives a consistent effort but doesn't really produce anything. Quick off the mark but once he's stuck he lacks strength or sufficient moves to create havoc. It's going to take a very poor offensive lineman across from him to be oft defeated. That type of weak lineman is prevalent deep in to the second half of preseason games. But now that Mitchell has moved into a spotlight role he's simply not special enough. I can see how coaches appreciate his effort level but Mitchell doesn't have a dominant trait like Soliai's raw strength and therefore the necessity of a double team. I can certainly understand why Odrick would be frustrated at Mitchell's contract.

* Tannehill once again avoided a rightful interception. Eventually the odds have to catch up with him. I posted the Football Outsiders link that detailed Tannehill with more dropped interceptions than any other quarterback in 2013.

* We seem to be blitzing more this season, specifically sending Wheeler up the middle. He's got a nice kamikaze style for that role. Also there's seemingly less chance to make a stupid error

* Gator Hoskins with some nice athletic ability and especially the athletic arrogance to finish.

* I think we're in trouble if the opponent has a true #1 receiver. IMO, Grimes is the most overrated player on the team entering 2014. He is not susceptible to falling off the map like Reshad Jones last season but I doubt his reputation among Dolphin fans will be the same a few months from now

* I've already detailed Dion Jordan and Damian Williams in other threads tonight

* Tannehill needs to study the trajectory and timing of Matt Moore's deep ball

* Fields is a better athlete than I suspected based on his sound technique while kicking soccer style

* Backup defense was considerably more boring to watch without Fede. Tripp was less effective and McCain simply doesn't have an NFL frame at this point. He really needs an offseason to get stronger and more defined. But McCain does have variety and instincts. After so many plays watching monotonous Jordan I was shocked when McCain actually dipped his shoulder on an edge rush.

* Broadcast crew was terrific tonight. IMO, Griese/Moore have had their best seasons in years. But I'm not going to let Griese slide from an anachronistic error. Actually two of them. Bob Lilly was responsible for that 29 yard sack in Super Bowl VI. Dick Stockton found the correct name. Then Griese tried to place Ed Too Tall Jones and Randy White on that 1971 Cowboys team. Not even close. Jones entered the league in 1974 and White in 1975. That was famous at the time, that a team as talented as Dallas managed to acquire high picks through astute trading and ended up with stud defensive linemen. I may not remember season specifics from the '90s or later but I'm not going to botch the 1970s.
