Hayden Fox's Preseason Week Two Assessment

2 comments. Cortland Finnegan almost had an interception. Had the ball been thrown accurately, it would have been.
On the Mike Wallace deep ball. Yes, he adjusted poorly, BUT, he was clearly held and their should have been a flag thrown.

in watching preseason games especially the Pats/Eagles. They have thrown a ton of flags in the defensive backfield. In the Pats game it seemed like their was a flag every 3rd play against the Eagles secondary. I was so disgusted, I changed channels.
That's why I am worried about opening day. I think the Pats get preferential calls from the officials, especially oc critical 3rd down conversions.

I thought that another positive on the night was further evidence of Will Davis's development as a CB. When Will came in, he played on the boundary and I saw Finnegan moved to the slot. Will has been on the receiving end of some seemingly tough penalties (I'm tempted to say bad) in both games - even the TV commentators said it as well. I think Davis is a pretty exciting player to watch and he's getting real close to making interceptions in a game like he does at practice. He seems to have a different skillset to most CBs. I stand by an earlier impression. He's a high risk, high reward player. Either a boom or bust, nothing in between.

Have only watched the first quarter so far but Wallace and Thomas clearly are the two biggest concerns, with the depth we have at WR I wouldn't have a problem with us trading Wallace if we got good value and the cap hit isn't huge. Wallace was great at the Steelers mostly when Ben was able to escape pressure so Wallace wasn't still running his route, he was just looking to get open deep. As for Gibson I could be wrong but at the Packers most of the receivers had similar measurables, and if Gibson, Matthews, Landry and possibly even Hartline can play inside and out it creates huge difficulties for any D.
I'll trust Benton on the guards but clearly Thomas was poor, whether the alternatives would be better I don't know but bar that position Tannehill did seem to have good time even though or because he was getting rid of the ball quickly. Great writeup btw.

Awesome... Just awesome. I can't wait to be screwed over! Do other fan bases feel as f***ed over as we do most of the time, I have to wonder

Nice assessment, as always.

Matt Moore - I'm glad to see your write up here. I've always been a fan of MM since he came to us. I reported back last year after I got to talk to Tannehill at that SB party thing that you could hear how much he loves Moore as a teammate - he couldn't hide it in his voice. The guy is solid and a pro (Moore) and a very capable QB who can come in and win some games if needed. Kudos to you Hayden for giving Matt kudos.

Wallace - I wonder if he was never really that good in the first place? I almost agree w you except we need him in there to keep the D honest - at least until we can find a real run game and someone else w elite speed. Other than that, he is indeed uninspiring.

Potter - is it just me or does he have a legit shot to beat out Sturgis?

I agree on Davis. Plus, his PI call was bogus.

Did everybody see how sharp Moore was? I want to see him in there with Mike Wallace, then you will all change your tune very quickly. I keep telling you all about Dallas Thomas and I am glad I am finally convincing some of you. He is going to get Tannehill hurt because he stinks. Hayden Fox has a good point about Gibson. Maybe it's just me but I think Rishard Matthews is a better player. It could be the fact that Gibson is still recovering from the injury. I don't think the offensive line is great by any means, but it looks deeper than it did this time last year. Tony Hills looks good at LT. I always thought he was good at the University of Texas a few years ago. Billy Turner needs to be the starting LG, College's age is starting to show. If you look at the game again, watch RG David Arkin. He is a better player than Dallas Thomas and should be in the mix as well. The coaches did Shelly Smith a disservice buy forcing him to play Center early in camp thereby putting him behind in the G competition.

In all fairness to Wallace, it looked like he was bumped just enough to slow him. I was surprised there was no flag especially with all the ticky tack calls we are seeing. I am in the crowd that thinks the Dolphins are better without him. His legacy can be the most expensive inactive player on Sunday's as far as I'm concerned.

Sturgis is in trouble. Potter gets the ball deep into the end zone on top of showing he can hit from 50+. Sturgis better get healthy this week so he can compete for his job but as far as I'm concerned, they can cut him and give Potter a shot.

No excuse from Wilson. That was straight from the Wheeler school of how not to tackle. It's as if some of these guys have no fundamental skills. The flip side to that is Jordan Kovacs. Young man is a model when it comes to tackling. His coverage skills are greatly improving and I think he beats out Don Jones.

Will Davis played real well again. The reckless play is gone. Solid coverage from him. Clearly outplaying Taylor who I don't recall seeing him make a play or hear his name.

As much as I dislike Pouncey's off field shenanigans, no question they need to resign him. Satele is going to get manhandled by the big interior lineman. That's the reason he was replaced in 08.

McCoy is a premier DL in this league. I am not going to call for Thomas' replacement yet. I am not certain Turner or Smith would have fared any better. Hope he learned from it and move forward. The leash is very short though.

We're just starting to see Matthews come into his own. That TD was gorgeous. He, Gibson, Landry and Hartline potentially make up what I think is one of the best WR Corps in the NFL. All are very consistent catching the ball and moving the sticks. Look for Wallace to be moved next off season.

Check the film out and I think you are right about Wallace…though I wish he would fight through things and catch a ball that hits him in the chest.

I also like from the PBP blog above that Clay states he will be back for the opener. Let's hope he is strong and good to go.

Speaking of the WR corp, this is the deepest group the Dolphins have had since 1984. that group was Mark Duper, Mark Clayton, Nat Moore, Duriel Harris and Jimmy Cefalo.

This is the question nobody wants to ask, isn't it?

One receiver who consistently isn't on the same page with the QB.
I am probably more critical of Tannehill than most. But ironically when it comes to Wallace, I do not hold Tannehill as responsible as some people do. Wallace wasn't there when Tannehill was doing extra work with receivers this off season. He didn't have to be, but he made his choice. Wallace is a nice decoy, but this offense can function without him on the field every down. To me, when a screen pass bounces off of your chest, you are not concentrating. I know he probably was eager to look up field and get going and took his eyes off the ball, but the guys who want to be on this team are concentrating and making plays. For example, see Matthews catch in coverage on the tipped pass that wasn't even intended for him. That's a great play, helping your team get a break, stepping up for your QB, all of that.

Wallace seems content to be known for being fast, making excuses in the media, not working to fix problems, and that's about it. I think at some point you have to take him out as a starter to send him a message and then give him another chance if he makes a few plays when given the opportunity. But we need to get our best receivers on the field and he is not one of them. The group has grown and he has not improved at all.

Can any of the mods take the "Trade" icon of the title of the post. I do not remember putting it on last night and should not have. I might have been a bit sleepy, but who knows. Thanks.
