Head Coaching Candidates: Just In Case

Joe gives NO intellectual advantage. None.

What are we building: I don't know.

Where are the young guys with the potential to be great: I'll take my lumps and say that Ryan Tannehill is that guy. As is... uh, okay, that's a tough one.

What is Philbin showing that he's contributing: Well, after being forced to fire Mike Sherman and Jim Turner, he's shown that he can hire good and/or promising assistant coaches when the owner forces him to dump the nepotistic turd hires.

What are his special skills: He's really good at winning coach's challenges.

:idk:

I'm honestly really rooting for Joe. I want him to do well. I want him to prove me wrong, and unlike some of the people who say that about Ryan Tannehill, I actually freaking mean it. I just don't see it.

Well we can't deny that there are guys that have improved under Philbin's watch... now the one thing you may counter is those are people are absolutely are committed to improving no matter what

Lack of consistency is a sign of a poor coach. If we remain inconsistent, he's a gonner.

Several players have made incremental gains in this regime.
Clay
Vernon
Jones
Misi
Jenkins
Miller

I actually am seeing a lot more player growth and player development now under this regime than the previous one.
When you add that we finally have a synergistic relationship between HC and GM and hungry young coordinators there is a chance that we are building something.

In regards to the bolded question. No one knows the answer to that? I am not sitting in Davie. The only way I can measure progress is by our record. Not some attempt to decipher the tea leaves from interviews.

How do you square the two bolded sentences?

Sparano had a .475 record as a head coach while Philbin is at .472.

There's a lot more data points here to look at than you're acknowledging. Now, if you don't think those data points are legitimate then that's up to you, but if all you're going to look at is the record then you might consider bowing out of the conversation. Just saying.

I've seen enough of Philbin. If we catch fire this year the most it will do -- or perhaps the least, depending on how you look at it -- is delay the inevitable. I don't have the stomach to do what it seems like a lot of Dolphins fans are willing to do... which is support mediocrities (Sparano, Philbin, Henne) because that gives you some temporary hopes about tomorrow even though it means years toiling in the misery of meh.

For what it's worth, I'm actually starting to think Harbaugh is a real possibility. There's so much smoke in the rumor mill now that I think there might actually be a fire. We've suffered long enough. I want to believe it can happen.

With our luck, we will land Harbaugh and he will turn into Saban 2.0 and bolt to college after 2 failed seasons... :(

I go back to something it seems like I've posted a dozen times. Hiring Harbaugh is an "A" move and we've got a "D" owner. Ross pulling it off simply doesn't compute. It's like watching a 4 trying to chat up a 9. It doesn't matter how lonely or horny the 9 is... 4s do not land 9s.

I do think there will be the opportunity. If Jay Glazer says it's over, you can probably take it to the bank. Ross is just going to botch it, is all. And then of course the usual suspects will convince themselves that Harbaugh never wanted to come here and was just using us and all that jazz... the same stuff they say about Fisher or a bunch of the other GM candidates now.

unless john harbaugh is packaging ozzie newsome in the deal i'll pass

The Raiders and Michigan will make a strong push for Jim Harbaugh.

Bevell or Quinn will wind up with the Jets unless Idzik gets fired. I suspect it will be Bevell as the Jets are offensively offensive. Not a fan of Quinn. I think he fell into the right job at the right time.

Mark Dantonio is interesting. Guys has built a solid program at Michigan State with 2 and 3 star recruits. Conservative yes but a helluva football coach.

Jim McElwain. Colorado State. See Mark Dontonio.

Gus Malzahn. Guy is a great offensive mind and will be succesful if he makes the jump.

I like Schotty. He took a lot of abuse from the Jets and their fans but it's not a coincidence the Jets offense fell apart after he left. As bad as Sanchez was Schotty had him functional.

I've always liked Todd Bowles. He took a less than desireable secondary in 2008 and made them into a solid unit. Unforunately he had to rely on Ireland to bring in talent and we all know that was a failure. He did a good job with what he had. He is doing really well in Az and would love to see him back.

I would take Rex Ryan as a DC in a second and hope like hell we get a shot at him.

Bowing Out of the Conversation!
A little intellectually sanctimonious are we?

I do not know if Philbin will succeed or not. No one does. Including You.
We are not tracking the movement of the stars here.
All I have said is if the record is 10-6 or better, then he deserves to stay because it means this regime has shown three years of growth.
Without access to the internal workings of the regime, the record, as the sum execution, of the regime is what we have.
So yes there are more data points like you suggest but there are so many hidden data points that how can you possibly know what are the factors behind the "data points" that you are relying on. Its called a confounder, and science is riddled with failed experiments because people fail to take them into account.

It is not fair to compare the record of Philbin and Sparano.
The only reason Sparano's record is not significantly lower is because of his anomalous record in 2008 which I am sure you recall included: the Wildcat(which was effective in winning us a few games early on), Chad Pennington falling in our lap, Brady being injured and a historically weak scheduled as a consequence of our 1-15 season.

Philbin, on the other hand, has been saddled with that asshat Jeff Ireland who built a roster so crappy that we had an unprecedented amount of UDFA make the team this year.

In fact if Ireland had just listened to Joe and used that 2nd rounder(plus our original 12th pick) on Brandon Albert last year perhaps our offense would have been perpetually stuck in the mud and Bullygate might not ever had happened.

We all admitted that this was the first season where we actually have the offensive linemen that could actually execute what Joe wants to do!

Its nothing but the usual suspects wanting something before its time.

waiting for lazor O to step up. If that dont happen, then joe goes.

Intellectual advantage? explain yourself.

tell me how Jim Harbough and how some players hate his teaching style equates to intellectual advantage. I dont even know what that means. Bellichick.....were on to cincinnatti.....rinse repeat.

This offense is avg. 24 points per game. much better than this time last year. It can improve greatly. its just getting going.....but finheaven? getting going on more change that will require changes to staff and players and system. yeah....cant wait.

Hue Jackson would be a good fit.

please, good fit. what is a good fit?

its not a matter of fit when you change everything.

Ok, Ive read your posts....but the first clue anyone should cling on to is that his wife put it out there that oakland would be tits. just ignore I guess. That man doesnt want to come here. Ross will make himself look stupid once again.
