here's something for all the people complaining about his deep ball

Interestingly, after the Panthers game, Ron Rivera told Joe Rose that he thought Ryan Tannehill was going to turn out to be really effing good. But that his deep ball needs work.

Personally, I agree that his deep ball needs work, but at the same time it's not nearly as bad as some people are making it out to be.

Maybe Tannehill's deep ball would improve if he let it fly sooner. As far as I can see, Ryan is hitting the target as well as I've seen most others QBs (I mostly see Romo, Wilson, and Ryan regularly) but the ball rarely gets to the receiver at the right time. Of course, it also doesn't help that it's Mike Wallace running down field to get to it--I don't think I've seen a more awkward receiver bolting downfield than Mike Wallace, and even Ted Ginn Jr. got there in full stride before bouncing it off his helmet when he was in Miami. Now, before anybody jumps on me for placing the blame on the receiver, ask yourself why none of the other Dolphins' receivers are as difficult to connect with down field. Who else has seen Hartline hit deep in full stride on more than one occasion? Either Tannehill needs to anticipate Mike Wallace sooner or the plays need to account for Wallace's speed better. Whatever it is, the problem isn't deep pass accuracy as it's already established, empirically, that Tannehill is no worse than average at hitting the deep pass.

I'm calling out Wallace17Miami. This poster continuously thumbs down posts that are pro-Tannehill and I'd like to know why. He does this without ever commenting in the thread to. I'd like you to explain your stance on the whole situation.

Please.

Listen, if it really has to be spelled out for you, ck basically demonstrates that Ryan Tannehill's primary struggles with the deep pass are disproportionately with Mike Wallace. And the eye test shows it as well. We have been yelling at Mike Wallace for losing his stride, slowing down, tripping up, or in some cases just not looking back in time to adjust to the ball. It takes two to connect on passes over 20 yards, and at 50+ yards through the air it's completely possible for the receiver to go off route to the ball. In this case, demonstrating that Tannehill is mediocre in the long ball squelches the complaints around here that RT17 is somehow anything less than average at going deep. That's what mediocre means; he doesn't stand out as far as results are concerned. Do you get that? He's right with the pack of other starting QBs for results going deep. RT17 struggles no more (and no less) than other starting QBs when going deep. Got it?

Even though your explanation is crystal clear, the naysayers want to interpret it in a way that makes them feel better.

Leroy Hoard said this on the radio and I thought it was interesting. He said it totally matter-of-factly as if everyone already understood that the problem here has been the timing of the pass plays. This was after the Chargers game.

When I pointed that out, it was CK who chimed in with something really interesting, which is that that play had an play-fake and a hitch step, both of which gave Mike Wallace more time to cover an absurd amount of ground and basically get past the point where the QB could actually deliver it in stride due to physical limitations. He even broke down the play and compared it to a Manning vertical to Demaryius Thomas -- a pass play which came out much sooner and was delivered in-stride despite the big difference in arm strength of the 2 QBs. That was a pretty interesting discussion and definitely swayed me to believe that coaching is a serious issue with this QB and this offense right now.

Now, on some of these throws, I think he simply needs to pull the trigger faster, but on others, it is obvious that the play design itself is a hindrance. This is where coaching matters.

I'd seen this before and thought it was just a glitch on the board. But now I think it's just on shouright's posts.

What I get is that you don't understand how averages are calculated. By definition, it cannot mean that he struggles "no more and no less than other starting QB's."

I like some of his post also but he over does the stats posts.I really dont want to see a rookie/second year player dissected to bits and pieces.I'm more interested in some things at the end of the year and some things where it builds up over a 3-4 year period.

This has been my biggest frustration with Tannehill. I had not seen these previous posts, so I'm a little relieved to see it in writing.

Even though I can't see Sherman leaving unless Joe Philbin is gone, I kind of hope that Sherman is not the OC next year. Two years with Sherman ought to be enough, and I think he was originally brought in for his experience and relationship with Joe. I hope for Tannehill's sake that there is a change in coaching on the offensive side. Unfortunately, if Joe Philbin cannot recognize this, then that is a bad sign for his tenure as HC.

Brady ranked 25th in the NFL since 2010 on deep balls. This story is a few weeks old.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Is Tom Brady's deep ball an issue? ranked 25th in the NFL Since 2010.
Sunday night, we'll get the privilege of watching two of the NFL's best quarterbacks go head-to-head when Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos visit Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in Foxborough, Mass. After 13 previous meetings, a lot of analytical ground has been covered, but what about the impact of arm strength? No, not Peyton's -- which we've previously addressed -- but Brady's.

Take a look at these numbers: Since 2010, Brady ranks 25th out of 31 qualifying quarterbacks in completion percentage on passes over 20 yards in the air. He has hit on just 30.3 percent of those throws. Compare that to Aaron Rodgers (44.4 percent, No. 2 in that time frame) or even Manning (38.2, No. 7). This season, the contrast is particularly sharp. Manning sits at 41.5 percent in 2013, compared to Brady's mark of just 22.9.
Forget for a minute about the Manning arm strength refrain. Is it Brady who really has the problem on the deep ball? And if he doesn't, is it merely the help?

The consensus will never be 100% right 100% of the time in much the same way that the academic peer review process is susceptible to letting some flawed logic live for a little while. Those who know football and have demonstrated some amount of success at making good football decisions are going to help shape the consensus more than anyone on this board. You know I'm referring to the so-called experts (coaches, scouts, former players). Basically, if I'm going to have some opinion on a player and it completely goes against the grain of a lot of knowledgeable opinions, and I'm still inclined to hold to my little ol' opinion then either I have some information that they don't (which I pretty much never do) or I'm delusional.

Those who claim Tannehill is already a bust and who are lobbying for him to ride the bench in the near future ought to consider what I'm saying. If their job and income were riding on playing vs benching Ryan Tannehill, would their conclusion continue to be "bench Tannehill"? I strongly doubt it. The likelihood that they see something that Tannehill proponents are unaware of is pretty slim. Now, it's well known that RT17 has areas of his game he really needs to improve in, but the deep pass is not among them. There are still people on the board who are beating that drum, though. That eye test is obviously flawed as the consensus doesn't meet it. Those who are hammering on Tannehill's pocket awareness find a lot more in common with the consensus.

Of course, the consensus can be wrong, but if you're going to wade against the consensus you had better offer some very compelling support. In other words, you ought to be able to bank on your knowledge and have something to show for it.
In my opinion the consensus here about something regarding the Dolphins stands a good chance of being wrong a good percentage of the time, due to what we affectionately call the "homer bias," or by contrast, what we call the "hater bias." In the end it comes down to confirmation bias.

In my opinion people shouldn't feel very certain about anything they believe about the team if it isn't supported by objective evidence. There are certainly times the objective evidence can be misleading due to various factors, but in the end you're going to go wrong far less of the time with it than with other sources of information (personal opinions, authoritative opinions, and anecdotal evidence).

As an aside, I agree with you (based on the objective evidence) that Tannehill's deep ball isn't any worse than the league average, and if you remember, I started a thread on Tannehill's sacks being due to movement in and out of the pocket long before it was en vogue, and had a "consensus" response at the time that I was way off-base, back when the offensive line was seen as the only possible explanation for the sacks the team was taking. That "consensus" was wrong in my opinion, and I think the movement Tannehill has shown the past few weeks has borne that out.

In my opinion people shouldn't feel very certain about anything they believe about the team if it isn't supported by objective evidence...

It's ironic that on this forum, the people who most often claim that they have "objective evidence" are often the most subjective in their opinion. Most have zero clue as to how such supposedly objective evidence has subjectively defined input parameters. And most have very poor football understanding as to how to derive such parameters.

To wit, compare the "objective evidence" of say, a Shouright, with that say, of a CK. Not even in the same universe, as to the derivation, application and understanding of said evidence.

Do a search on your posts, Shouright, and see how often you claim "objective evidence" for a pet hobby-horse, and with the completely wrong conclusion being drawn, especially toward Tannehill.

It would fill an encyclopedia. An encyclopedia of purely subjective pabulum cloaked in "objective" language.
