Hickey 1 - Ireland 0

Ireland would've re-signed Grimes(after all he was the one who brought Grimes in) Give me a break, that was an easy one. Great player, who wanted to be here.

Let's see how the rest of free agency plays out, not to mention the draft, before we crown Hickey as a competent.
But I thought our locker room and front office was in such disarray that nobody would want to play for us? Also for those that think this was such an easy deal, Grimes had other offers and it's been widely available that Brent's wife said they did not like Ireland.

Grimes wife was upset when ireland got sacked and defended him at length

Just curious. Who else had made offers to Grimes?

I'm not going to get excited about free agent signings until they prove it on the field but I would bet dollars to donuts that Ireland would not have done such a good job on the Grimes contract. I would also wager that Hickey took a totally different approach, rather than start with a low ball and negotiate every dollar tooth and nail I bet Hickey started really close to where the deal is now and blew Grimes away. This is how you create a good locker-room atmosphere.

Sometimes when I read this board I think there are Dolphins fans who actually liked Jeff Ireland. Let t go!!

Its kind of funny, last year everyone was chastizing Ireland for not addressing the line. Now that the line is being addressed, some people arent even the least bit satisfied. We all know FA's are expensive, Especially a top ten LT. Not that I like Ireland, but I wonder what the reaction would be if Ireland was still here and HE brought Albert in??

Ireland Sux

What I remember last year was people saying don't invest heavily in the line, you can find decent cornfed anywhere. I also remember people loving the Tyson Clabo signing. Now I did not want to trade for Brendan Albert last year, and am not overly thrilled with getting him. But if he does his job well then I'll be fine.

I mean, I can't complain too much or say other guys would be better even if I wanted to sign them. Jared Veldher is coming off a torn tricep, and Anthony Collins has never started more than 7 games in a season so neither are exactly sure things.

Not to mention different system, coaching and the like. It's all unknown. What we do know is that Philbin wanted Albert last year and he's getting him now. We also know that John Benton is a very good NFL O-line coach in the ZBS. Let's see how it plays out before everyone deems it a success or failure. And to speculate that another player would be a better fit is just dumb. We've already been through that with many players where people think if he plays here with our system the production will be the same and so the results will equal more wins. Doesn't happen that way.

Guys...I may be the only one that feels this way,but I'm taking the "Let's wait and see approach". "IF" reports are true on the numbers, then yeah, that's alot of cake. But at least we're not sitting on our butts watching all the other teams scoop up the talent. Tackle was a priority for us...you know that. Yes,I wanted Monroe too,but Albert is nothing to scoff at. He stayed healthy last year, and look at the run the Chiefs made. Jamaal couldnt have had the year he did, without Branden's stability on the left side. Alot of people doubted that Grimes(WHO I "LOVE" AS A 'Fin BTW) could stay healthy last year.....now we have one of the best Corners in the League!!! I for one am happy to have Albert coming to South Beach, and I'm on board with it. I'm anxious to see how Aponte/Hickey has it structured. They did just fine with Grimes. Welcome Branden!!! Do us proud, and prove alot of'em out there wrong!!! Besides.....11-5 for what some of you Guys say is "AVERAGE" Tackle is pretty good dont you think? "I'LL HAVE SOME OF THAT PLEASE"!!!

So far Hickey has done everything right. But I also thought Ireland had a very good offseason last year, up until the season emploded.

As for the whole thread, I think Hickey is much more willing to spend money out of the gate than Ireland. Now some of that may have had to do with us not really having much cap room until last year.

The bigger question is how he does in the draft for me. Albert obviously is a guy Philbin has wanted for a year (similar to Parcells flirting with Dansby for over a year before signing him), now I want to see how he drafts. Under Ireland/Parcells there wasn't very many risks taken in the draft (last year was a different story with Jordan) but we tried more often than not to go safe rather than swinging for the fences. Didn't matter cause in a lot of cases we struck out doing that as well. Though to Ireland's credit, he found contributors late.

I thought Ireland's off-season last year sucked. Especially the draft.
