Hickey started good but is finishing weak.

Look, Hickey went out and got some very solid guys for good deals. Who is out there right now that you can't wait for? You have to leave yourself some room in case someone gets injured on your team and you need to fill the hole. You also want to leave some room in case a guy you really like gets cut at some point along the way. You also need to pay your draftees. And if you don't spend it all you get to roll it over to next season. Just because you have money doesn't mean you need to spend every dime. Spend money, but spend it wisely. You do just as well not writing a bad check as writing a good one.

Yeah, I'd like to see him a little more proactive I admit and now am rethinking my aversion to Farmer as it looks like he's doing a good job.

But then again everything is relative as it looks Hickey at least isn't both stuck in a paralysis by analysis mode nor making enemies out of players' agents. So there's that :idk:

Report: Jets privately apologize for negotiating tactics

When the Chiefs chose to complain about the failure of agent Steve Weinberg to follow through on a verbal deal for receiver Emmanuel Sanders, several league insiders — both from the team side and the agent side — pointed out that NFL teams routinely engage in shady business dealings, too.

The Jets apparently could be on that list, in one specific way.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets have apologized to at least one agent after the team misled the agent regarding the team’s interest in a player during the three-day exclusive negotiating window.

Multiple agents told Mehta the Jets engaged in “questionable practices” by leading them to believe the team’s interest was at a level that the eventual offers apparently didn’t match.

That specific accusation comes in an article that focuses primarily on the frustrations arising within the organization regarding the slow pace of G.M. John Idzik in free-agency negotiations. An unnamed member of the organization said that Idzik “operates on his own time and schedule,” and that the situation is “unbelievable.”

As to the latest player the Jets failed to sign, Mehta reports that the Jets made a “desperate 11th-hour offer” for cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, but that it was too late to keep him away from the Giants.

That said, the Jets closed the deal with receiver Eric Decker during his first and only free-agency visit. So Idzik hasn’t been slow on every possible candidate.

Looking at the situation more broadly, the leaks suggest a level of dysfunction that either didn’t previously exist or that had been successfully concealed under Idzik’s leadership. That could make for another mess of a season, if the Jets get off to a slow start in 2014.

Hickey has signed 5 starters including resigning Starks and Grimes and two potential starters in Smith and Finnegan.
Since I don't know their draft plans or other moves including possible trades I am happy so far.
Remember last year we killed it (on paper) in free agency then had what turned out to be a sub par draft.
Maybe this guy can actually find some starters in the draft. That would be a nice change.

I would think that as a rookie GM Hickey is probably leaning heavy on Philbin, Coyle and Razor, so I think it's too early to really judge his moves right now.

Now we are to be picky with our money.

We have about $20 million left. $7-8 million needs to be reserved for rookies. $4-5 million needs to be reserved in case there is an emergency need in season and carry over for next year. That leaves about $8-9 million to fill the remainder of needs for this year.

How many players will that get us? 2 or 3? It isn't a buyers market now. Right now it gets more calculated and slows down as the players take more visits and they search for the right fit.

If Knowson is really a target he will take about half of that money left. Joseph will probably take the rest.

It seems to be a pattern under aponte, to not spend to the cap. If we continue to go .500 under these circumstances, then i think its safe to say Ross has given this edict. Which brings up the question, is ross more interested in making money with the team, or winning

Capable GM's aren't made from free agency, especially when they had $40 million to spend. The flip side is they can quickly ruin their name wasting that money. GM's are made in the draft.

We will still sign a couple vets imo but I believe we will have a good amount to roll over.
