I watched the first half at a local bar with some friends, and my buddy was telling me about a recent trip from which he recently returned. When the D Jordan got beat in coverage (on the play you highlighted), I interrupted his story with, "****ing brilliant! Tell him to gain 25 lbs and THEN put him in coverage!" This staff has blown it with Jordan - from the move up to draft him, to his development.

Assuming Miami stayed at 12, we could have drafted either Sheldon Richardson or Star Lotulelei - or even Eric Reid, and then at 42, we could have had our pick of Kiko Alonso, Jon Bostic, Jamie Collins, or Arthur Brown. Or we could have drafted any RB aside from G. Bernard. We could have Eddie Lacy. I would have just drafted Zac Stacy in the 3rd or 4th, but still . . .

Instead, we got Dion Jordan and asked him to bulk up to play DE.

As for coverage....D-lineman drop back all the time in zone blitzes...it part of the game, sometimes it works out and other it doesn't.

pretty sure the d jordan play was man coverage jammed him at the line got himself to where he had to play trail technique and got smoked by the quick out cut...basically should tell the staff the man coverage stuff at this weight should be tabled...more drop zone etc just dont expect him to cover as much ground or close as well...the lateral quickness is not there either right now

the kid needs to drop 8 to 10 lbs and get some of his game back...if that means he can only play in the sub package so be it

His best trait was being a 3-4 olb....the Dolphins don't run that....oh well....he will be traded after this season and we won't have to worry about where he should play. I personally don;t ever see him developing into anything more then an exceptional athlete that ends up an average football player. Dude lacks any fierceness...

Overall the offense looks pretty similar to last year's in terms of production. Can't run the ball, force Tannehill to beat you with his arm, max score 20 pts per game. Why does it look so similar to last year? Because the running backs so far have been the same as last year. I agree, Lamar Miller has lacked vision since day one. Also, this OL needs to learn to run block. They are doing outstanding pass protecting, but if they can't run block and we become one deminsional like last year, the pass blocking will breakdown. Turn it around by getting a RB with vision, and teaching the OL to create a crease and tie up the DT's arms for the RB.

What offense have you been watching? It's just preseason, but to me that just means it's going to get even better once the playbook opens up. This O could realistically score 28 every single week. That's a 10-11 win season in my book.

He's not physical, not elusive, once there's contact he goes down, he's not shifty...he's just speedy, and if there's a clear hole in front of his face, forget it he's gone, but other than that, there's nothing.

Honestly not sure how you see that. I agree he's not the greatest breaker of tackles, but to say he's not elusive or shifty is something I don't understand. He's no Barry Sanders but he is shifty enough. Far greater than Moreno is going to bring.
I see him producing huge in this offense this year. Watch.....

I'm glad somebody is finally plugging Brackett. I haven't noticed whether he can block or not yet, but if Charles Clay struggles to heal, he sure looks like a poor-man's version to me. Brackett hasn't struggled to get open at all, has caught most everything thrown to him, and has a little wiggle for an H-back/TE. At his size I imagine he's a liability blocking, but probably no more so than Clay. If we keep 4 TE Egnew's fighting him for a spot. The fact that Egnew is getting reps with the ones early tells me their leaning his way though.

i would think he will make it with a red shirt...but they could try and stash him on the p squad especially if he gets no run in the preseason...tough to say...i do know that plenty of teams need tight end help so they better think long and hard about what they are gonna do there...

be it egnew be it brackett be it hoskins be it lynch hell be it miller even...i'm leaning towards keeping 4 tight ends with what i see in this offense...unless someones cut comes to me...miamis got 4 weeks also to keep a couple extra guys while the suspensions go thru

There is no doubt Lazor's offense is more creative and more flexible. I believe the concern is that a defensive game plan that does not respect the run limits the effectiveness of play action. It seems like a team could devote 6 to the box, commit completely to shutting down the pass, and this line would only generate enough push for a 60 yard game on the ground.

While the line may seem to be that bad in the running game, I seriously doubt the offense will be that endemic in the running game.

Running the ball is not nearly as important as it used to be in the past. A poor running game won't set us back terribly much.

We do need Knowshon, that's what I have been saying, too. It's not good enough. And now even with Lazor - he was the test, Miller is showing no signs of breaking out. He's fast, that's it. He's not physical, not elusive, once there's contact he goes down, he's not shifty...he's just speedy, and if there's a clear hole in front of his face, forget it he's gone, but other than that, there's nothing.

Meanwhile...Carlos Hyde, the best back of the draft is shining. He's even catching passes out of the Pistol:

First round pick next year for Miami has to be RB or TE. I remember you or someone saying RB is going to go early in the draft next year because the players are so good. We have to get one. I think everyone underestimates the importance of a good running game and a talented running back.

I think you mean LB. Hyde went in the 2nd round this year. RB's just don't have the value. What this team needs is a consistent 3 down MLB.

if teams only put 6 in the box i feel confident in this scheme and with the line movement we can run the ball...it would help miami also though if the right tackle and right guard didn't get smoked at the los...but this season will come down to the pass protection and the offensive scheme...both of which looked to me majorly improved

short yardage is probably still gonna be an issue but again use more lateral movement not drive blocking which is a weakness of this group...and by all means sneak the qb whenever you can to convert

Good points. I definitely agree with your assessment on James. His pass blocking has been close to stellar, albeit in pre-season without blitzing etc. But it is so encouraging that Miami's biggest weakness last year could actually be a strength this season. It is possible that the Dolphins cut their sack total in half or even better. Obviously, the run game is a pretty legitimate concern without improvement there Miami likely misses the playoffs. The team needs to be able to get those tough yards as you simply can't always convert short downs by passing.

I hope that Philibin makes a change at linebacker. Wheeler just looks terrible and was terrible last year. Ellerbe may not be much better, but I don't see too much benefit in replacing both unless we have two guys who can step up and start. I think Tripp or Jenkins should start.

Hoops, since we want to run lots of inside zone in this scheme, do you think that 4 receiver sets might be the way to go to run the ball? Force the other team to play a nickel or dime package and then attack when they have 5-6 DBs on the field?

Because it seems to me that with most of our offensive talent and depth being at wide receiver now, this could allow us to get our best players on the field and potentially even help our running game.
