Hoops scoops...fins chargers

If it makes anybody feel better, Brian Hartline did say on twitter that he was disappointed in his play so he knows he has to be better.

And I agree JDW, while I don't have many complaints about playcalling yesterday I do feel like Sherman (and Philbin since he's an offensive guy) are stubborn with playcalling and player choices because of things that worked in the past or players having decent camps (Legadu last year) and only make changes when they absolutely have no other choice but to try something different... and then go right back to status quo.

I mean Rishard Matthews has improved leaps and bounds from his rookie year, but even then look at that. Had a solid camp but was literally the only WR in camp not to get a run with the ones or twos outside of Hartline who was hurt. So Julius Pruitt, Davone Bess, BJ Cunningham, Jeff Fuller, Roberto Wallace, Ocho Cinco, Marlon Moore, and Clyde Gates were all ahead of him and then we gave Anthony Armstrong and Jabar Gaffney time before him. He was the 13th guy on the list!

Here's something, we finally start using play-action bootlegs with our athletic QB who is great at running both play-action and bootlegs, and we get positive plays out of them...

... only took 10 weeks?

I can't find it anymore, but right after we drafted him, Ted Slimm posted video of Matthews' combine performance. He was laying himself out for uncatchable footballs; most guys aren't going to do that, they're just trying not to get hurt.

Some guys just want it more.

and it shows...you want guys who are going to make the most of their opportunity. I hope it goes noticed by the organization and Matthews becomes a bigger part of the offense even after Gibson returns next season. Hoops pointed out that Matthews is an overall better pro prospect then Hartline and I agree...Matthews give the QB more options and will fight for the ball, this isn't a knock on Hartline as I think he works the sideline as well as anyone and runs extremely good routes, but Matthews and picks up yards after the catch and plays strong.

Props to Danielle Thomas we have been killing him all year. he broke some tackles and fell forward finally.
I love having grimes he is a ball hawk, he can jump out of the gym as seen on that last play and the fade to Vincent Jackson last week.
Clay's YAC ability is impressive. Of course it showed on the long TD that was nasty. But also on a simple quick out on 3rd and 2 he killed the defender with a juke and took off upfield

We still gave up 4 sacks which is what we give up every week on average, why are people acting like we were so much improved in that area today?

One was Tanny running out of bounds for no reason. The protection as good overall. Many times RT had more time than he thought he would have and got rid of the ball too quickly to the short routes..

not all sacks are equal?

After looking at what Gibson and Matthews can do when they are actually used, I would be thrilled to put Gibson, hartline, clay, and Matthews on the field at the same time.

have to be able to run the ball though to sell it and get those edge guys to crash inside...we haven't been able to run it enough this year to utilize em much...

I'm tired of talking QB, so I'd like your input on this:

I've seen other posters who I think are very knowledgeable opine that Mike Pouncey gives away the snap by moving his head right before he snaps the ball. I noticed Nate Garner did not do that today, and not only were the Chargers caught jumping offsides several times, but they also weren't really getting a great jump on the ball. Do you think there's anything to that, or was that simply a case of San Diego's front being that bad?

And yes, Hartline was flat out bad for most of the day. Meanwhile, Mike Wallace turned in a pretty good game. If only these guys could all turn in a good game on the same day...

Man, Im so glad you mentioned this, cause it was the first thing I noticed at the game. I remember another member posting video showing how Pouncey looks up and to the right, before each snap. It was great to see offside penalties consistently, and not the like the Bucs defensive line jumping our snaps all the time. You can tell San Diego had the same thing in mind, but since they changed it up, got completely caught off guard.

that's true but a lot of centers lift their head before snapping the football etc...and don't give anything away...obviously though something pouncey is doing is being picked up on cause tanny called the same counts and we had the chargers jumping it all over the place...

the run everyone else to the los take one look around as you walk to the los and then snap it immediately to go quick is something i have been waiting for all season...i loved seeing it...looked like brady out there on that snap as far as walking to the line like a boss and quick snapping it...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but everything I've ever seen indicates that having an effective running game really doesn't impact play action, even though it seems totally counter-intuitive. Defenders still have to read their keys, right? Tannehill has had some great numbers out of play-action even when our rushing game is awful.

But I will never stop calling for bootlegs. He is damn good at running bootleg plays and it's criminal that we don't use them more, especially on third and short.

he threw a ball short of the sticks on a 3rd and short that mathews ran the route too short and as a result when he broke it out the ball was slightly behind him...mathews has to carry that route just past the sticks before cutting outside if so it hits him in stride for the conversion...

he threw another ball short of the sticks on 3rd down where the charger safety weddle was holding clay on the outcut...should have been called...

i don't have a problem with either one...

what??? your running game dictates play action...you can't run the ball pa is worthless...well unless your protection can really handle ears pinned pass rushers hell bent on getting to the qb and not playing run contain responsibilities...

as for the bootlegs you need to see the de's/34 olbs crashing down to the inside and losing contain to be able to carry that out without the qb turning into a stayed home up field rusher...you don't want to bootleg into a de that is staying home and rushing up field you want him to have to crash to contain the run from the backside and take the bait...

hell yeah your running game dictates these things...do you remember all those 3rd and like 15's we use to still carry out pa on years ago and the d would just laugh and when the qb turned to look down the field after carrying it out he got blasted??? that's cause no d is gonna respect pa on 3rd and forver unless you loosen em up with some draws etc in those scenarios and even then good luck...you can't run the ball you can't work off pa effectively you can't get your wrs down the field vertical cause your protection won't allow it

and with our pass pro??? jeesh...you better get those rushers to play some contain

The one play to me that really stood out was the incompletion to hartline, seemed like such easy pitch and catch. After watching it a few times it looked like Hartline ran it deeper than what Ryan was expecting as the ball is out of his hand right at the break. Should have been a first down and the game is over basically. Sherman as the OC is killing me Hoops, killing me. I so agree that this guy has to walk. We have talent and the only guy we seem to use well is Clay. Jesus motion Wallace, run a drag route with Wallace, maybe a screen with Wallace, maybe tell your qb to just throw it as far as he can and let Wallace run under it. Read option plays, lets see them a few more times. Damn team just crash down our line showing no awareness that Tannehill can run. I bet the Panthers will be doing the same thing, just crashing down on our line. Give them something to think about. Do it early. I hope Coyle has learned also that our guys can beat people straight up and stop all the stunts and twists on first and second down. Stop giving easy running lanes. Run that crap on obvious passing downs. Also, why not try a double screen to a guy like Egnew, he's played great as our FB but maybe give the fake screen to Miller and turn and throw to the open side. Double for hartline maybe as well. We actually have lots of weapons I love to see Sean Payton with our weapons, my god the game plan would be sick.
