How do we feel about the Pouncey draft pick, 4 months later?

3 first rounders and the line still sucks?

I'll say it again...

Long is a probowl LT

Carey was inherited, so i wouldn't place the blame on Sparano/Ireland. In all fairness, Carey is a weed. It happens...

And, we have yet to see Pouncey and Long take the field at the same time... Pouncey hasn't played in a meaningful game yet. Being a rookie with just over a month of training camp/scrimage in him, it is WAY too early to judge his play.

Im not giving this coaching staff the benefit of the doubt, far from it... Im just saying to quit crying over spilled milk, have a positive outlook, and lets see if by adding another 1st rounder if he can have the same impact as their first-1st rounder (Long)...

They were right with Vonte Davis over Darius Butler so maybe they had the right idea with Pouncey...

Daboll laid out a plan for three, four, and five receiVer sets. This spread offense utilizes zone blocking schemes, so you need an athletic center for running game to work. Imagine you are Jeff Ireland with a tremendous need to upgrade the athleticism of your offensive center. The entire plan for the running game depends upon this skill. It is clear there will be a lockout reducing the chance for obtaining a free agent to fill the need. There is only one rational choice. Pick the most athletic center available in the draft.

Pouncey is solid, only the season will show how good he is.

Ironically, very few saw how bad our O-Line was before the draft (numerous threads this summer) ... so drafting Pouncey was smarter than most folks suspected. Where would we be without Pouncey??? (we'll know if he's injured. Yikes!!)

I think we all agree on one thing though ... we wanted a QB in the draft SOONER, than later ... and got nuttin'. Pouncey suffered from our QB dreams!!

i find it funny how everyone refers to the OL as having 3 first round picks, and how that in some way means that we should be focusing our attention eslewhere. Whenever there is mention of adding a guard/tackle/center, this type of response is sure to come up.

i think this is nonsense. Long is a pro bowler, and well worth the #1 overall IMO. Carey came aboard in '04 under Wannestadts regime and has never lived up to his billing. Finally, Pouncey is picked this year, has yet to fully digest the playbook OR participate in a regular season game, and people on this site are already calling for the coach's head due to a complete failure on the offensive line. Now whats fact? Pouncey has been suiting up in a Miami uniform and practicing now for a little over a month ONLY. Long has yet to play in any preseason games due to injury and the Front Office's reluctance to risk further injury. And Vernon Carey has been forced to play musical chairs by a coaching staff that's DESPERATELY trying to find a position for a player from a PAST REGIME. To the credit of management, they did restructure Carey's deal reducing his contract from his slated 16M over the remaining 3 yrs... To what i'm not sure, but its likely to include an opt-out clause in case Carey's sub-par play on field continues.

Yet still, whenever there's mention of adding to the OL, the overwhelming response will be that this coaching staff is clueless, and that it'll be a wasted pick/signing. Hindsight is 20/20, we know this, but are the violins really necessary, or in this case, fitting?
I think it's actually 4 first round picks if we include Mark Columbo

I have a slightly different take on that. I like Pouncey and I'm hopeful he becomes Langer or Stephenson and admittedly I've been very critical of him because of his draft number in relation to his experience and development , but I maintain taking him at 15 allowed this regime to get lazy, IMO. Had they taken a different player/position, this regime would have been forced to REALLY make some moves on o-line. I think we'll suffer because of it.

Well the OL has sucked so bad this preseason even with Pouncey so I guess it would be even worse without him. So yea, I guess it was the right pick, but then again they could have gotten a different player and just signed a pro bowl center in FA(Gurode) but they obviously didn't know that before the draft.

FORMER pro bowl center (Gurode). He's not that guy anymore. Why can't some of you get that through your heads. There is a reason teams aren't lining up to sign him.

its probably cause baltimore already has...

Gurode a step slower is still better tham Columbo and Cook. Those guys suck really bad. That's why we should have signed him, moved Pouncey to RG (let him learn from a Pro-Bowler) and Chunk back to RT.

one thing thats been very apparent about pounceys play at center is he's struggled mightily handling strength in the run game especially on short yardage and goalline...i don't see that changing if he's manning the pivot next monday when vince wilfork is lined up across from him...i think the best thing we can do right now is move pouncey to left guard put newly signed ryan cook at center and incog at right guard...but i just don't know if we have the time to make a change like that this late in the game preps given pounceys a rookie and cooks probable lack of familiarity with this new offense...

I agree with your points also. I was shocked we didn't hit the O-Line Free Agent market hard ... our O-Line problems have festered for 3 years.

We have no substantiated facts why the FO didn't, but there are several theories of which none can be substantiated (though NONE fly with me), i.e. saving Cap for a big QB move, RB move, etc .... but what can those positions do without a line?

Drafting Pouncey ... another move we don't have any idea what the FO was thinking. Anybodies guess?? i.e. Best available player, Best available O-Lineman, Centers are scarce so take Pouncey if ratings are close, etc.

Brother, I wish I knew!! But what's obvious to all of us. They didn't get the O-Line fixed after 3 years. Stuff like this gives the FO a black eye & us ulcers (and ALOT of threads lol).

ehhh...just got done reading a vikings fan on here saying cooks hot garbage...can't say i've ever really looked at any of cooks game stuff so if thats the case i guess we have to roll with pouncey at center going forward...better gameplan to run the ball away from wilfork and give pouncey plenty of guard help...

Pouncey is a good pick, im not mad about the pick. The center position is very important and he just like Long should have long last impact on this team. A lot of you are are taking it over board with the complaining and its understandable. But realisticly, we have four players during a shorten training camp learning a new position in our starting OL, Murtha, Pouncey, Carey and Colombo. It should have been expected that they were going to struggle in the preseason. Hopefully we can get healthy get Long back and start developing into a cohesive unit. This may be a very good draft, getting three potential future startering quality players in Pouncey, Gates and Thomas.

what qb did u guys want so bad when next years draft is better? we got a new OC - once we got a new DC we took a huge step. Sparano and Jeff may have figured lets not spend a pick on a qb in the first round b/c with the lockout etc neway theres no way a kid will put us over the top this season - next year is a better qb class lets take a crack at a guy we like on the trade/FA market as a stop gap who can make a playoff run (orton) if we dont grab him then lets give Henne his one last shot. if he does not come through then at worst we are fired and retain some dignitiy for not spending draft picks and reaching, and if henne doesnt pan out and jeff and tony stay - they draft a qb next season and the team is already there for him to jump right into.

imean you look at guys like mallet and they dont look so GREAT. mallets release is so long and ugly. kid has a great arm but who knows how he'll pan out.

as for POUNCEY - which is the subject of this thread - i think it was a decent pick esp since rumor has it we DID try to trade down but couldnt find a partner and Pitt was interested in pouncey not long after our pick. i've seen him play great and also play really terrible from snap to snap. He gets dominated in short yardage situations which is not what i want to see, but he is a rookie on a short offseason. i will withold judgement for at least a season, but imo a starter is always a good choice b/c busts are EVERYWHERE. im not sure why ppl keep acting like "busts" are few and far between and we are the only team who gets them. we also have uncovered SEVERAL undrafted FA's who have panned out really well. lets see how pouncey developes. just hopefully its not too late. he'll need to win at least some battles on monday night against the big guys to give us any shot at winning.

Maimi most certainly did everything in their power to trade down. Problem was there was nothing that interested anyone enough to trade up with us.
