So its the world cup and this is a debate we are having here a lot over here on various forums. Im bored so I thought id stick this up... it will probably go nowhere lol

There obviously isnt an American Football world cup, but pretend it did exist and America was just one of many strong nations, would you prefer to see your country win that, or would you rather see the Dolphins win a superbowl? or the Marlins win whatever it is baseball teams win... well you get the point

I know its a silly hypothetical question, but I wondered what an American forum would say? As it has surprised me how many I have seen pick club success on soccer forums

Personally? I regard myself as someone very proud of my country but I rather see either United or the Dolphins win the league/Superbowl than see my country win the world cup - and it isnt even close.

Dolphins hands down. I have seen the 80 Olympic hockey team win gold, I have seen the US wrestler defeat an unbeaten Soviet Wrestler. I have seen the US win in the soccer world cup. I have seen the US win the Golf world cup. The US has plenty of great sporting moments in my memory bank

I have been a Dolphins fan for over 30 years and all I want is one Super Bowl before I die!

World Cup.

The nationalistic pride puts it over the top.

It would be our greatest sporting moment in our history.

Dolphins. This shouldn't even be a question. World Cup may only come every so often, but in the end, it's still just soccer. What's that saying? You can't polish a turd...

70% of American's could care less about soccer. ( Cosmos... Galaxy.. Redbulls )

Although, most root for the USA in these type of tourneys.

Dolphins success 1000x times over. Like NY said, the US has had major success in just about everything else. Sure it'd be great to see them win a World Cup, but they make up for it in the Olympics, basketball, baseball, etc. I'm still waiting for the Dolphins to win a championship. Good thing I'm still relatively young!

I think it's a little different to our own situation for American sports fans. The US are not starved of international sporting success, like the UK is. If there was a world cup for american football, there would only be one likely winner, and it's hard for anyone to grasp a mythical situation where there were a bunch of countries capable of playing at the same level as the US.

It would an interesting question though for the current FIFA World Cup, would people rather see a Dolphins superbowl win than US winning the World cup. There is less chance of the US winning the World Cup than the Dolphins winning a superbowl. It would be a truly global shock and a huge achievement. Right at this moment I have no doubt in my mind that the success starved Dolphins fans would still vote for Superbowl win. But it's amazing how the momentum builds, and national pride flows during a run to the latter stages of a World Cup. It's the one sport that practically every country in the world competes in, so it is a true "World Championship". During those runs opinion will begin to change, still unlikely to change for Fin fans, but for other teams more accustomed to winning like the Steelers, Pats etc, and for those less dedicated fans of their teams, I could see a reporter asking that very question to patrons crammed in to their local bar to Watch the USA take on Brazil in the semi final of the World Cup and a lot of them saying a US win.

No question about it, the Dolphins win the Super Bowl. Soccer is, well, it is soccer. AKA boring.

Dammitt Nubs..I never agree with you...but I got to give it to you on this one...Hell yea..a dolphin Super Bowl win..soccer?..soccer?

You guys remember a old beer commercial, where the old guy says,"He is ok with a football or baseball breaking his window, but if a soccer ball did it,well.there will be hell to pay?"

Americans have bought more tickets for the World Cup games than any other nation outside of Brazil. Opinion is slowly changing, the amount of money paid by NBC for the rights to show the English Premier League, is another sign of that. There is a younger generation of "soccer" (sorry I hate that term) fans coming through. A long cup run this year maybe the impetus the sport needs on this side of the pond to push forward. I don't think it will ever push American Football from it's lofty perch or even compete with Basketball or Baseball for sporting love in the US, but the NHL should be a target for MLS to shoot towards and the World Cup should be there with the Ryder Cup and Olympics as must see, flag flying, chest thumping tournaments that can grip a nation, even in the US.

It's strange then, that it's far and away the world's most popular team sport ? I guess they must all be idiots !

I say the same thing about Basketball, now that's a terrible spectacle IN MY OPINION. The bulk of the rest of the world don't get what's so great about American Football.

There's room for lots of sports and everyone has their own tastes and thank goodness they do, because life would be a little dull if there were just one sport to follow, like here in Canada :p

Dolphins, easily, and I love the World Cup. I think the reason, and this may apply to those you spoke with UK, is that we follow our clubs/teams on almost a daily basis. We dedicate nearly all of our "fan time" to what our favorite teams are doing each and every year, whereas with the World Cup, you're dedicating very little time to following what the national team is doing for 3 out of 4 years. Maybe just keeping up with friendlies, rooting for then in UEFA, etc.

A good comparison for Americans, since there is no international American football tournament, would be that I would MUCH rather see the Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup than the US win a gold medal in Olympics hockey. Of course, I'll still be rooting for the latter, which is much more likely than the former. :bobdole: (I obviously choose my teams poorly).

As for the soccer-bashing, better get used to the game, because it's here to stay and is only going to continue to get bigger. One thing is for sure, my son will be playing soccer, not boring ass baseba...zzz.
