Hypothetical question: Dolphins success or American success?

There is definitely a problem with a sport that have to wait 4 years to win, or lose, a game 1-0. The fact that it is so popular just proves how ignorant non-Americans are.... hows dat for egotistical. By the way in case you didn't notice in the first post, that IS what I was aiming for.

I would of used a different word personally, especially when comparing the average intelligence of an American compared to people of other countries. But thanks again for bringing down the curve.

Have you ever seen it played at the top level? I watched a friendly four years ago at the Buccanneers' stadium and I thought it was exciting as hell, even though it was raining and I ****ing hate getting rained on. Actually part of the problem with soccer is that the action is so non stop that you don't get enough breaks to piss and/or buy more beer. Because goals basically come from nowhere you never know when things are going to happen.

Football by contrast is better to watch on TV because it's a much more strategic/situational game, suited to slow motion instant replay. You lose a lot of the detail watching it in person. On the plus side after a touchdown you can take a piss and get a beer and probably not miss anything. And anyway if you do there's probably more scoring where that came from.

Yes. I've also played the sport quite a bit, both in high school and in pickup games for a long time. I've enjoyed playing the sport.

But it is the most boring spectator sport on the entire planet. I'd honestly rather watch golf -- another game that I enjoy playing but find incredibly boring to watch.

again, its not a soccer question lol oh well was worth a try

Would loveeeeeeee to see the US win the world cup especially because the world would go crazy as to how we made it happen. Especially this year with Altidore going down, no top players like you find on other teams and we are not even picked to make it out of the group. (We may now with Portuguals injuries and red cards) BUT I would love to see the Dolphins have success more. Liverpool, the United States and soccer(football) is my pride but the Dolphins just outrank them. Would have to go with Miami having success.

Ok, I'm confused...isn't the question if you'd rather see our (hypothetical) USA American Football team win a World Cup or a Dolphins Super Bowl? Why should soccer even sway anybody's opinion of the two choices? And why is soccer being argued about because of it?

Anyways, Dolphins SB for sure. As much as I love 'Merica, I would rather see the team I've followed since birth finally win a SB in my lifetime rather than to have to cheer for a team consisting of Jets, Patriots, and Bills players.

What is this Soccer thing everyone keeps talking about???

:bobdole: Let me try to simplify what the OP was trying to say. Imagine there were a World Cup of (American) Football every 4 years in which the US wasn't the only dominant team and has only won it, say, once ever (please don't make me define "hypothetical"). Imagine that this tournament was as big and important as the World Cup is to soccer and that the tournament has been going on since 1930.

Now, in this situation, which would you rather see? The US get the elusive World Cup of (American) Football or the Dolphins winning the Super Bowl?

Hockey fans have something similar already in Olympics hockey, though it's not as big as the World Cup is to soccer.

Oh, ok. Got it now. In that case my response is this:

I guess most people on this forum needed an elementary description...

But yes, this is not a soccer question.

much better explaination. I think this would be a hard hypothetical situation, as most americans don't care for soccer as much as other countries do. And most people root for their cities team, because it has meaning behind it. it's where they grew up, or where their family grew up. Some people pick a random team when they are young and watch that team year in and year out, whereas something like the world cup happens every 4 years, and you just don't get as attached. The olympics is a great example of how to think of it. If there were pro american football in the olympics, i'd like to see the USA win, of course, but i'd still prefer to watch the dolphins win the SB.

And that is precisely what's wrong with the game. Waiting 4 years to win or lose 1-0 as you said, it's no wonder people go absolutely nuts during a goal. Hell, they may only see their team score 2 World Cup goals in a decade, or fewer.

It's like the Dolphins 1-15 season. There's no way we should have gotten so excited over a Week 15 win over a team that didn't even make the playoffs that year (Baltimore), but that win remains one of the greatest moments in some Dolphins fans' memories (especially younger fans).

SIDE NOTE: I watched every minute of every game that season and after Camarillo's Overtime touchdown, I walked out of the sports bar emotionless. To me, it was embarrassing and downright silly that I go nuts over that win. Don't get me wrong, I had a huge smile on my face, but it was the oddest feeling I've ever had as a fan of this team. It was more relief than jubilation.

Could be worse. You could have to wait over 30 years for a Super Bowl appearance (let alone a win)...
