Hypothetical question: Dolphins success or American success?

Growing up in Miami and passionately loving the Dolphins and Heat, I've already had the fortune (as a fan) to have witnessed the Heat win 3 Larry O's and participate in 5 Finals in the last 8 years. I would love to see our Phins hoist the Lombardi in my lifetime.

I do follow and love soccer, and being half Spanish (dad is from Spain) I got to see the second team we pull for (Spain and US) in our house win the World Cup in 2010. So I don't have a huge feeling of emptiness to see the US win the World Cup as I do for the Phins winning the Super Bowl.

Dolphins not even close. I could see soccer eventually passing up baseball in popularity due to the fact that baseball is an outdated excruciatingly boring sport meant to entertain 1920's America but I cant imagine it would ever get close to catching up with football in the US

The problem with soccer is they need to fix the rules. Whatever moron made up that crap was clueless. The rules are all backwards. Watching a 90 minute match that ends 1-0 is like watching paint dry. Soccer is like basketball where the goal is 25 ft in the air and you can't go down court until the other defense is in place.

Offside should be reversed, so that there CAN'T be as many defenders as there are strikers, and the goal extended another 2 ft wide and a 2 ft higher. Then you would start getting 20-18 games and it would be worth watching. Any game where you can go to the bathroom during the middle of it and never be worried you missed anything is not going to be a popular sport in America.

Personally I would rather see my high school win another state championship in football than to win a world cup. And we have already won 3.

Talk about egotistical.

There isn't a problem with soccer. That's why it's by far the most popular sport in the world. I doubt they are considering changing what works due to some Americans opinion who really doesn't understand the game

There are some actual soccer fans down here too. This was a video shot at a bar I was watching it

Watching a few min of these World Cup games has reinforced my opinion of kick ball...

'Fins hoisting the Lombardi trophy all day, every day, 8 days a week.

I'd like to see the US win the World Cup just to see the reactions of people in countries that actually care about the sport, but yeah, I would much rather see the Dolphins win the Super Bowl.

Soccer is a brutally boring spectator sport.

I'll take it over basketball any day (since this is where the thread is apparently going). The only thing that typically matters is the last five minutes of the game in which you get to watch a bunch of free throws to see who wins.

I can appreciate that there's a lot more to soccer than the average casual observer fathoms. However IMO it's overall global popularity is bred through generations of sometimes ridiculously and obnoxiously fervent fans. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think it's egotistical to believe that if these same generations of fans were incubated on American Football, wherever it was played so long as played at NFL caliber, these avid fans would largely prefer our "football" to theirs. I believe it's far and away the greatest game ever conceived; no other team sport can come close to integrating the strategic and tactical elements requiring team synchronicity down to each and every player fulfilling his respective function in order to be consistently successful. I always root for American teams no matter the sport involved in international competition and do get caught up but I'd turn to a fins or playoff game if on a competing channel 9 out of 10 times

Many people outside this country say the samething about American football. "How can you sit there and watch something where they stop plays every few seconds and do nothing for almost a minute between plays."

The "USA" chant is truly one of the most obnoxious things in the world.

Anyway... Dolphins, easily.

The World Cup is great to watch because for Americans it's a nice slice of guilt free nationalism. We're underdogs in a way we're not at the Olympics, for example, or in, uh... bombing people. The US has always had a great affection for the underdog but we're so goddamn rich and powerful we're almost never the underdog anymore, which is odd. Rooting for the US National Team at the World Cup is an expression of the American attitude in the most classic sense.

Have you ever seen it played at the top level? I watched a friendly four years ago at the Buccanneers' stadium and I thought it was exciting as hell, even though it was raining and I ****ing hate getting rained on. Actually part of the problem with soccer is that the action is so non stop that you don't get enough breaks to piss and/or buy more beer. Because goals basically come from nowhere you never know when things are going to happen.

Football by contrast is better to watch on TV because it's a much more strategic/situational game, suited to slow motion instant replay. You lose a lot of the detail watching it in person. On the plus side after a touchdown you can take a piss and get a beer and probably not miss anything. And anyway if you do there's probably more scoring where that came from.

I didnt mean a dolphins superbowl v a soccer world cup but rather an nfl version... i guess its hard to imagine tho if your not used to international games

There is definitely a problem with a sport that have to wait 4 years to win, or lose, a game 1-0. The fact that it is so popular just proves how ignorant non-Americans are.... hows dat for egotistical. By the way in case you didn't notice in the first post, that IS what I was aiming for.

Im rooting for team USA to be eliminated from the world cup as soon as possible to limit what little interest there is in this country.
