Hypothetical question: Dolphins success or American success?

Don't bother. You might as well explain String Theory to a taco. Actually, since the concept you were aiming for is so easy to understand, it's more like trying to teach a taco how to count to ten.

Whether this thread is about a fictional American football World Cup, soccer, hockey, baseball, etc, it will never change the fact that soccer is boring. In fact spending time trying to teach a taco to count to ten is more exciting and a better use of time. lol

I will root for the USA team and hope they win, but it doesn't mean I have to like the sport.

To each his own, but how anybody can call what happened in that US-Portugal game boring while at the same time getting all hyped up over truly boring and relatively worthless OTAs is beyond me. It just screams blind hate for a game they can't understand, similar to a taco's disdain for Arabic numerals, if tacos were capable of thought.

Eh everyones entitled to an opinion. Personally I would rather do community service than watch a baseball/cricket game.

I dont overly care if this actually happens as my interest in us sports is limited exclusively to the nfl but I do think soccer is gunna continue to grow a lot in the us. And I know thats been said before.

The nfl is probably at an all time high and could take a dip with injury risk etc. There is also the aspect of the latin pop growing and what ive picked up on ( could be wrong) as a general decline in baseball. Also as the mls and us team gets better thst will naturally attract more fans I know that much for a fact

I could see soccer being a strong 3rd/4th sport in america in 20 or 30 years. But thats just from the perception of the us I get from following sports fans and journalists. Wether it hapeens makes little difference to me, tho some more good players would be nice.

My biggest soccer concern is the fact that the arab oil money is gunna leave british football a completly dead husk in 10 or 15 years and leave nearly every club bankrupt for spending beyond their means.

The salary cap and draft is why im so into the nfl now.... its about more than who has the richest owner. Look at psg..... finanical penaltys a few weeks ago for overspending and they just broke the world record to sign a crap cb who can't defend. Madness.... and all due to a rich oil owner.... how dull

You don't even know how many people's minds you just ****ed up with this statement.

I thought this wasn't a soccer thread

They don't actually think it's boring. Either they're not watching and assuming it's boring or they're just projecting their butthurt that Dolphins fans are getting excited by a different sport by calling it boring.

I understand soccer, played it when I was younger, I just grew up I guess. Plus we live in a country with more exciting sports and events. There is a reason why MLS is not real popular.

But if you like it that is your choice and I respect that. Again, as an American I hope the USA wins and does well in this World Cup. Just won't see me parked in front of a TV watching, I will see the results on the news or Twitter.

Thought it might lol and the luiz deal blew just about everyones mind anyway

And yes well nobody else seems to care about that fact so I gave up lol

I think the tide is beginning to turn for soccer in the US as a spectator sport.

There are many reasons why soccer isn't considered one of the major sports in the US, but I think above all it has to do with it being not a good fit for the hyper commercial culture we have here. Unlike the other major spectator sports in the US, soccer doesn't stop time except for halftime, so there is no room for commercial breaks! That is a huge problem for brands and marketers. With the inverse, American Football is PERFECT for commercial culture because there are constant breaks in the actions to insert advertising.

Secondly, kids in the US weren't traditionally exposed to high-level soccer. They usually transferred to playing one of the major sports like Am. Football and basketball because that is where their athleticism could be rewarded financially if they ever got to a high enough level. They never saw soccer on TV, or soccer stars. But in the connected era, people and kids in the States are being exposes to more and more high-level soccer from the Euro clubs online and now even on Cable. Now, people are becoming more familiar with the stars of the sport, and when you see the best in the world playing it, it becomes more exciting.

From everything I've read, this is the most viewed World Cup nationally that we have seen ratings-wise. I don't recall there being this much excitement for USMNT in 2010. I am genuinely seeing a lot of interest from people who previously didn't even give soccer a second look.

I think the NFL actually should fear MLS and the rise of soccer nationally. With the concussion/brain damage issue lingering over the league, I can see a lot of parents steering their children away from am. football and toward other sports. Soccer stands to benefit from that. Especially when the kids seeing the kind of money that the Euro league stars make.

Can you imagine athletes like Adrian Peterson, Calvin Johnson, LeBron James focusing on soccer from an early age? They would be a force in pro soccer leagues throughout the world.

I think we will see the MLS surpass the NHL in terms of popularity in the US in the next decade, and surpass MLB in 20 years perhaps. They may need to tweak the broadcast presentation somewhat to make it viable for the ever-important marketers and brands, but with digital content delivery, second-screen advertising opportunities, etc., the "no time stoppage" problem is becoming less of a burden for the sport from a commercial standpoint than it was in the past.

World cup. It would be so unlikely that it might actually stir up interest for soccer in this country. Athletes might want to play it in droves and then we could dominate the world more often. Much as I want a Dolphin SB, this would be so much bigger. Every time I would get a comment on reddit or youtube about being a fat american I would smile and post a gif of the World cup winning Americans!

Every sport is boring when you don't know the players or teams. It's not even about understanding the sport, it's knowing the players and teams. I'm sure college football is very exciting, but I turn a game on, I don't know what the standings are or what the game means or who the stars are, it's boring. I once took the time to learn about the teams and players in college basketball a bit before the tournament and it was the greatest thing ever.

Now, I don't watch soccer ever except the world cup and I don't know the players, but I know the teams and understand the concepts and that's enough to make it super exciting. There is an art about soccer that you don't see in any other team sport. It really is quite the game when it's played well. In my mind no other team game can be as boring, but no other game can be as exciting, either. A great game puts you in a state of awe that builds and builds, like a crescendo, there are no commercials, no breaks, the players and audience enter some kind of orgiastic trance and when the goal comes it's a tremendous release, either into bliss or blackest despair. It's like the two-minute drill with the game on the line for 90 minutes of total intensity.

Oh, and to answer the question, if my national team -not the US- won the world cup, it would send the entire country into such a state that it would be impossible to describe. After far lesser wins people honk their horns and people go wild on the streets. If you didn't know, you'd think it was the end of the world. I'd take that anytime over a SB win.

I think the tide is beginning to turn for soccer in the US as a spectator sport.

I think as long as the Spanish population continues to grow in the US as will the popularity of soccer amongst the major sports.

I also believe that what's hurting baseball and football right now is that costs are rising significantly for families to put their kids into those leagues compared to soccer or basketball where the costs are not as high and also along with fear of injuries as you stated.

Soccer has always been available in my area since the early 80's, in fact our high school games were very popular. They were always heated battles and brought just as much emotion for the players and viewers as the football games did. Though I don't believe sports in general are as popular today as they used to be.

As for my opinion on Soccer today. When I was younger I used to play and follow intensively just about every sport that had a ball. Basketball was my true love, I was in the gym every single day for hours on end but now I can't even bring myself to watch a game anymore. Same for soccer, no interest at all, I equate watching the World Cup to watching Olympic men's gymnastics or bobsled, blah. It's each his own, I believe, when it comes to futbol. No need to get butt hurt because someone thinks soccer is boring.

Can't wait until I don't have to hear about soccer for another 4 years

I think you nailed it.

It would have been an interesting discussion if it weren't for some being so blinded by their strange hatred (read: people are talking about this instead of my precious Dolphins and their incredibly boring offseason?! I no likey!) for the sport you merely referenced. The best is when they say the "get it" but still go on to post off-topic swipes at said referenced sport rather than actually contributing anything to the discussion. :idk: It was a good effort though.

I'd still rather see the Phins win a Super Bowl than a national team win anything (or the Maple Leafs win a Cup over the US winning a gold medal to use my previous analogy, but that's clearly another "boring sport" because of the low scores and whatnot). Unfortunately, soccer will likely become more popular than baseball in the US (basketball should overtake it within the next 5-10 years) before the Phins make the Super Bowl again. :bobdole:

No, you clearly don't, as evidenced by your decision to come in here and blatantly disregard the actual discussion (just a reminder: it has nothing to do with soccer) to take childish swipes at a game you don't comprehend simply because it's drawing attention away from your precious Phins OTAs and random pointless signings.

I don't expect you to watch it. I fully expect you to watch 30 for 30: Elway to Marino for the 100th time instead.
