I need an answer....

We will never know the true answer to that question, because even if Alex Smith was his first choice Saban isn't going to Let Ronnie Brown know that now, it wouldn't serve a purpose, and Saban doesn't strike me as the type of guy that does things without a purpose.

My personal opinion? Alex Smith was number one on our board and would have been a Dolphin had he slid to #2.

haha i think we've had this arguement before, i really dont think saban would lie and say ronnie was on top of his board if he wasn't... if anything he wouldn't have said anything about the board when asked if ronnie was who he wanted... i mean he did admit he wanted corey webster in the second but we had to settle for roth... i think if alex smith was on the top of his draft board he never would have said ronnie was... he woulda had a more PC answer like "we knew ronnie is a great player and are glad hes a part of our organization" or some ****

Of course there is a logical answer and you get a cookie for being the first to say it but, I'm not trying to shoot down the logical people. It's the "AJ sucks" camp that I'm trying to scud.

mmmm.... chocolate chip!

If Feeley is so horrible and his faults are so obvious, then why hasn't Saban noticed them or done anything about it? Why is he even in the compettition for a starting job? There are dozens of people on this MB who will tell Saban that Feeley is a waste of time so, why is Saban so stupidly insisting that AJ compete for the starting position. With his obvious faults and all, why doesn't Saban just go ahead and make him a third string emergency QB and let Sage and Gus battle it out for the starting position? Saban must be an idiot to think AJ can start in this league.

Right?

You're right, I absolutely agree. Feeley and Frerotte really are like most any other quarterback in this leauge, with exception of a few extremely gifted ones. Give them a good system, some help with the running game that allows the play action to work, an offensive line that gives him time to set up and some receivers with above average skill and any quarterback can succeed if they have a licks worth of talent. So that's what Coach Saban's job is here, to find out, if given all those previous situations, can A.J. or Gus help this team succeed. They will or they'll be replaced. Nothing wrong with Nick at least seeing what he has first.. Well said inFINSible

The more I think about this issue the more I come to the conclusion that Saban has a REALISTIC goal in mind for the 2005 Fins. Whether it be improve from last year's record to not having a losing season to making the playoffs, etc. Only he knows what that goal is because he is the one that spent two months in his office evaluating game tape of all the players on the roster, etc. Thus, the question for him becomes "can the players on this roster achieve that goal and what areas need to be addressed to meet that goal". The fact that Feeley is being allowed to compete for the starting job tells me that Saban feels he can achieve his goal with Feley at QB. Next year's goal may be different and thus things may change. However, to say that Feeley is an untalented quack does not fit with what Saban has done in his evaluations to date!

They're like a new car and an old car...
One needs to be taken out on the freeway and broken in....the other needs some bondo and some fresh paint....but both will probably be good enough to get you to work and back everyday. Change the oil and tune the engine on either one of them and you just might have yourself a reliable little grocery getter.

I don't think I qualify as a bona fide hater, but I've read 4 pages and am amazed nobody has brought up the simple answer to your question: as flawed as AJ may be, the other qb's on the roster are not significantly better. There. That's The Answer.

Doesn't prove that AJ is qualified to be a legitimate NFL starter, just that we may not have one on the team. Just as some are illogical AJ haters no matter what, you seem to be drifting into the illogical AJ-can-do-no wrong camp. Don't know if you're just trying to drive home the point (because I normally find you to be one of the most reasonable posters), but would you concede that AJ could end up being the starter simply because he's the best of a fairly untalented group, none of which would start on most NFL teams? If Saban cut every qb in camp that he didn't feel had the potential to be a legitimate starting NFL qb, it could make for some very quiet qb meetings!

I think you make a very good point as well, I did think I kinda of alluded to that in a back door kind of way here:

When do we get the list? Why not post it now, then there's no going back. If AJ goes to the pro bowl( or just has a reasonable year) , then they will be reminded to eat crow. If he ends up in "a garage working on starters," well, what can I say? Caw. Caw.

 Now everyone is going to ask if they're on InFinsible's hit list. You should know whether you're on it or not.

Patience....there is too much time between now and then....if they know they've been branded, they can back-pedal during the season.

There are already a few that have changed their tune recently...which is funny, because they must have seen someting that made them soften but, what??

But what if someone was extremely drunk one night durning a game, AJ threw a int, and they came here and ranted about it and never remembered doing the next day because the thread got buried along the the mainforum? inFINS could be out for their head and they would never know it....what if it was you, wouldn't you want to know? lol
