Every year, I try to be positive and hopeful with whatever new players, coaches, systems, etc. But with the failure of Vontae and Sean Smith to live up to their hype, I started really looking at our personel. I realized that the majority of our starters aren't draft picks, they're free agents, meaning our draft picks can't beat out players that other teams let walk.
The unit with the most draft picks starting is the o-line - 2 1st round picks and a high 2nd. That should be a dominant unit - they sure didn't look it last night. Long is a stud, but Pouncey looks average and Martin got flat out beat on a few plays.
NOT ONE other starter on offense was drafted by us! That's ALL our skilled positions - QB-Moore/Garrard,RB- Bush, TE- Fasano, WR-Ochodroppo, Legnne Nanu-nanu, and Bess (was an undrafted FA).
Defense- Odrick and Soliai- dominant game changers? No, serviceable but not scaring anybody. The best D-lineman came from Canada.
Burnett and Dansby are decent linebackers - oh, wait, we didn't draft them, we drafted Koa Misi, the invisible man.
Smith and Davis were the one spot where it appeared we addressed a position of need through smart drafting... They both got abused last night, by a team that was 4-12 last year.
And the weakest unit on the the defense, the safeties? Yeah, we drafted all those guys!
Doesn't matter who the coach is, if we play a 4-3 or a 3-4 defense, WCO vs pro set, until we draft some players that can beat out other teams cast offs for a starting role, we're not going anywhere.
Sorry to be so negative, but I just can't keep the homer glases in place anymore. I feel like the cupboards were bare years ago, and we haven't made any appreciable progress with our drafting. Besides Long and hopefully Tannehill, who have we drafted in the past 5 years that's a truly top player at his position?
