Interest In Couch Could Pick Up Soon

Volek and Garrard weren't on the radar when the move was made.

Rick got screwed by two men (three if you count Gibbs) on the AJ trade: Dan Snyder and Dave Wannstedt. Dan swooped in and established the market price for QBs with the Brunell deal that got done, and he then refused to move Patrick Ramsey even though it is clear he was out of favor because he was a Spurrier-regime player. That really only left AJ out there in the time frame Rick was convinced this team needed a QB in. Yes, he could have waited for the likes of Kurt Warner. Unfortuantely, Dave made it quite clear that he wouldn't consider any QB unless they were in for minicamps. This was supported by the Brian Griese debacle. AJ was third on what was a list of three QBs, but he was the only one available.

As somebody else said, it's really Wayne's fault for giving Wanny a do or die year. Rick saw the handwriting on the wall and understood that meant it was also a do or die year for him. Desperate men do desperate things.

GREAT write up. Had Ricky stayed it the results would have been different as well. AJ was meant to grow with Ricky running the ball and making defenses stack eight. AJ was the stronger arm that could open the passing game and exploit that stacked box the way Fiedler never could. When you have to throw 30-40 times with no running game and awful offensive line, you're going to fail. Of course, how many times has this been said? People shuffle it aside. Ricky would have made defenses honest. AJ would have done a lot better.

I just heard a little bit ago on sporting news radio (Rick Ballou show) that it looks like Couch may sign with the Giants soon. For what it's worth

I can't believe that he wouldn't want the chance to start again, and that is never going to happen with the Giants. Miami (if he wants to start again) may be one of his best bets, With the incumbants not really seperating themselves this offseason, He has got to think that he could make a strong push for starter next year.

Maybe he doesn't want the pressure of competing for a starting job ever again. It could be that he just wants to earn his near-minimum pay and live out a quiet life.

If that is his wish, then I wouldn't want a QB on my team that is happy with second best.

Same here.

As I have said in other Couch threads here, it's no great loss if Miami doesn't get him.

I'd rather keep Brock.......................thanks for the news though Nub.

..Couch can actually start a game and not plain lose it for you....Brock on the other hand is AT BEST a practice squader.

I think he's close to the chopping block anyway. Even Brock is looking better than AJ and he's greener than Ricky's weed.

Ridiculous. Brock isn't anywhere close to AJ.

Be real...AJ is not going anywhere this season..even if we brought in Couch...Couch would not be ready to take the start from either Gus or AJ till midseason at best...if he does come, it would probably mean the end for Sage...not AJ...besides it'd be too big of a cap hit to cut AJ...(compared to Sage...)

I say bring Couch in and give him a shot, we have nothing to lose.

I agree, there would be no harm in bring him here for a look. It doesnt mean we have to sign him. But if he looked really good and had his strength back why not?

Interest in crank it up Tim Couch is always high before you actually see him play. As another poster accurately described in this thread, Couch is a dead armed hasbeen. Or never was. Couch never could make the vital 3rd and 10 dart in the NFL, the drive sustainer where you have to split LBs and DBs on a rope. His ridiculous crank it up motion combined with a pathetic arm gave every defender in the vicinity plenty of time to stuff the play. Green Bay figured that out in less than a week.

The hype regarding weak armed QBs suddenly reviving their careers is always hysterical garbage. Some use Jim Plunkett as an example but that's nonsense. Plunkett always had plenty of arm at Stanford and the Pats. There is no hope for someone like Couch or others who never had adequate arms to begin with. For example, Todd Marinovich had a powder puff arm at USC. I'm an 'SC alum who used to crack up in the Coliseum alongside my friends when Marinovich refused to throw the Hail Mary pass because it would verify how lousy his arm was. There were at least five examples in his career when Marinovich would self-sack or throw a dumpoff instead of launching a 40-45 yarder in a Hail Mary situation. Somehow, Al Davis ignored all that and took him in the first round. Almost immediately, there were reports Marinovich was kneeling at midfield and throwing it through the goalposts. When he took the field it was nothing but weak ducks and that never changed despite annual reports he had undertaken special exercises to strengthen his arm.

"[The Dolphins] would be perfect for me," said the 6-foot-4, 225-pound Couch, who recently got married and has lived in Fort Lauderdale for the past few years. "I'm not sure what role they would want me to play, but I'm open to competition."
