Jimmy James said:Volek and Garrard weren't on the radar when the move was made.
Rick got screwed by two men (three if you count Gibbs) on the AJ trade: Dan Snyder and Dave Wannstedt. Dan swooped in and established the market price for QBs with the Brunell deal that got done, and he then refused to move Patrick Ramsey even though it is clear he was out of favor because he was a Spurrier-regime player. That really only left AJ out there in the time frame Rick was convinced this team needed a QB in. Yes, he could have waited for the likes of Kurt Warner. Unfortuantely, Dave made it quite clear that he wouldn't consider any QB unless they were in for minicamps. This was supported by the Brian Griese debacle. AJ was third on what was a list of three QBs, but he was the only one available.
As somebody else said, it's really Wayne's fault for giving Wanny a do or die year. Rick saw the handwriting on the wall and understood that meant it was also a do or die year for him. Desperate men do desperate things.
GREAT write up. Had Ricky stayed it the results would have been different as well. AJ was meant to grow with Ricky running the ball and making defenses stack eight. AJ was the stronger arm that could open the passing game and exploit that stacked box the way Fiedler never could. When you have to throw 30-40 times with no running game and awful offensive line, you're going to fail. Of course, how many times has this been said? People shuffle it aside. Ricky would have made defenses honest. AJ would have done a lot better.
