It's crazy watching those videos of Marino. I mean, I remember how fantastic he was--greatest of all times. But then to go back and see it you are still amazed. His vision is the best I've ever seen. He knows exactly where every WR and DB is and will be throughout the entire play. He simply didn't miss when a WR was coming open. His downfield vision was ridiculously good. His peripheral vision was awesome too, as he always managed to just ease away enough from the rush to remain out of their grasp, stepping up at the exact right time, effortlessly gliding around in the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield ... it's uncanny.
His mind does instantaneous calculations of exactly of every player's position, speed, angle and he knew exactly where to throw the ball to go just beyond the outstretched arms of the DB into a tiny window where his receiver could catch it. Then he delivered a perfectly weighted and lofted pass to hit every receiver in stride. It makes you laugh watching it, because those poor DB's never stood a chance. The only questions were whether the OL could keep the rush off him and whether the receiver was going to drop the ball ... otherwise it was unstoppable.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, he had a cannon for an arm, excellent touch on finesse passes, and the quickest release in the history of the NFL. We know all that. He also consistently threaded the needle to deliver dazzling play after play after play. These are givens. He retired with all the meaningful passing records in the NFL, yards, TD's, TD's in a season, completions, 4th quarter comebacks, etc., etc., etc. It's clear, there never will be another like Dan Marino.
