Interesting Tannehill Stat Comparison

How would you know to whom to attribute that, however, Tannehill or the receivers?

I know the offense plays a role in this with so many comeback and out routes which by design are harder to break a tackle and get more YAC, Tannehill putting where the can run more can also be attributed to it but YAC is on the receiver more than everything else. Other teams have much better YAC numbers then us and they run screens and short passing offenses as well.

Okay, based off this site it shows Miller at 7.7 YAC, Clay is avg 5.7 YAC for 156th in the league, Daniel Thomas is 5.7 as well, Gibson was 4.5 YAC for 234th in the league, Matthews 4.1 for 253, Wallace is 4.0 for 258th, Hartline 3.9 for 262. As a team we avg 4.89 and are ranked 28th in the league. That is brutal.

And now let's hear how you would determine, objectively, to whom to attribute the difference between the league average in YAC and where the Dolphins are, however below-average that may be.

It's easy to nominate variables in theory that are responsible for other variables. Supporting that theoretical relationship objectively is another matter altogether.

it's definitely the wrs...people are mistaking run thru contact of late with poor tackling...only wr in the core we have who can run thru contact and win physically is rishard mathews...

qbs throwing the ball in this o away from contact ie away from the leveraged defender...there should be more rac but we have a pretty finesse wr core especially

Shou, I know you don't want to blame others for Tannehill's issues with stats that you like but seeing YAC numbers that are 28th in the league, not the middle but bottom of the league has to show that our receivers when they catch the ball do little with it after the fact. Yes ball placement, the offense and hitting the guys in stride do attribute to lower YAC. Are you surpricsd we are at the bottom of the league? I'm not. Better yet, are you surprised by who's at the top of the league?

I also feel like our screen game is inferior to most teams in the league. For some of the best QB's in the league, it seems this is a big part of their offense.

Just an observation, I don't have stats to prove. Does seem that this could be contributing to the lack of YPA.

if i had to guess i would say denver is tops in the league or close...and that's cause they have wrs who run thru contact consistently...thomas and decker especially

Yes totally

Not just screen but crossing routes as well. If a receiver can get a defender in a trail position on a crossing route and the qb can throw an accurate enough pass, the receiver has a very good chance of racking up some yards after catch. Unfortunately the Dolphins don't seem to run very many crossing routes to take advantage of teams wanting to play man-to-man against our receivers.

Denver is 5th actually. Top 5 is Eagles, Lions, Packers, Seahawks, Broncos. Of those teams I'm not stunned by any of them. Look at the receivers each of those teams have.

We ran it versus the Jets and Wallace got 18 yards. I've beenc rying for that route all year in man to man. Especially now that Clay is becoming more of a stud. Let him blast out for deep seam route and bring Wallace underneath in a drag route. Its there to be had. Especially in man to man.

Short passing game + no YAC = lower YPA.

Looking only at stats doesn't tell a complete story...some fail to realize this....

but some are in love with the YPA stat and will continue to mention it on a daily basis until they find a new stat to pimp on a consistent basis

I don't have a problem with the stat itself, just when people try to assign it to only one player.

I couldn't agree more. YPA is more of a team stat then a QB stat. Everything belongs to it, blocking, the pass, the catch and the running afterwards. YPA is or should be a stat that is the offenses (team) stat.

Tannehill has gotten 57.7% of his passing yards through the air this year, which isn't significantly different from the league average.

Here's more on the concept, pertaining to last year:
